Clover food truck
It's a nice change from the lunchtime culinary wasteland that is MIT.. A health conscious and most importantly flavor conscious menu with a focus on fresh, seasonal and local ingredients.
The food isn't very filling though and I generally end up either spending $10 at the truck or grabbing another small lunch two hours later. Which is a bummer, cause it does taste good, it's just too light on the calories. (The chickpea fritter has the best chance of filling you up... anything else and you'll be left hungry).
Best keg selection in Boston area?
I'm not sure if this is the best forum to ask, but I thought I'd give it a try.
I was wondering which beer/liquor store has the best keg selection for kegerators. Blanchard's in Allston has a good number and reasonable prices. I was looking forward to trying Marty's in Allston, but it looks they're done. Kappy's out in Everett didn't have a very big selection and their prices seemed a little steep last I checked.
Any opinions or suggestions?
Thanks!
Good (and bad) Restaurant Week experiences
Totally agree on this one. Went to Harvest last year for dinner and was pretty disappointed. Good thing there's a plethora of coffee and ice cream shops in the area.
Hell Night menu posted
Our Mahi (5 b's ?) was way hotter than the steak (6 b's?). After trying the Mahi, a DC actually cut off a piece of his steak to give me so that I would have something to eat for dinner...
Hell Night menu posted
Went on Monday night. Most of our table felt the bombs on the menu were arbitrary and you basically were going to eat what they gave you. We were also sat in the kitchen section before they opened up the windows. This was brutal, too much chili in the air. About 30 min. into dinner 8-8:30 one of the waitstaff had suffered enough, so they cracked the windows.
Drinks:
Chili Beer - Tasty, spice isn't overpowering
Kamakazi - Quite spicy, though not overpowering
Margarita - Not spicy, but still a good margarita
Apps:
Ribs - We all actually really enjoyed the ribs, not hot, but good flavor.
Island Creek Oysters - Solid, habaneros are hot, but what did you expect?
Mussels - One of our table's favorites as well.
Entrees:
Steaks - The meat was cooked just right and had a great flavor. The veggies were really hot though.
Mahi - Way over spiced. Basically tasted like it was soaked in Habanero juice making it nearly unpalatable.
Pork - Good flavor, not too spicy.
Pasta From Hell - Simply out of control. Order another entree if you plan to get this, because there's no way you're going to make it more than a few bites.
Hidden meal deals in Boston and Cambridge
Just thought I'd revamp this thread as meal specials tend to change often around here.
Does Bukowski's still do the 1.85 burger special?? Where's the best 10 cent/free wing place for happy hour?
Best South Indian in Boston/Cambridge?
Looking for quality dosas, pao bhajji, and bhel puri. Anyone have a good rec?
Best Indian in Singapore
Just had dahi puri at Ananda Bhavans on Serangoon. Delicious. Nearly on par with those in Mumbai. Will definitely be back frequently to sample the rest of their menu....
Long Beach to San Jose roadtrip w/ kids
SLO - Tio Alberto's for top notch mexican fast food. (Right near bubblegum alley). Boston Bagel and Big Sky are right there too.
Cambria - Old Stone Station for seafood, salads, and sandwiches. Main St. Grill for burgers and bbq. Both are great lunch spots.
Best Steak and Cheese Sub in Cambridge
I've seen few posts about places outside of downtown boston and cambridge. Any good recs for something closer with T access?
Place to watch Sox - burgers, nachos
Bring your wallet to Game On, maybe bring your friend's wallet too. That place ain't cheap.
What Is Good at Cafe Kiraz in Cambridge?
LASAGNA and GARLIC BREAD.... 6 bucks?!?! MMMMM
Good lunch spots in MIT area?
hit emma's before 11:45 or after 1:15 and you'll be fine. desi dhaba at the corner of main and columbia is pretty consistent for their indian buffet. mary chung's or mulan for americanized chinese.
Thai - Rod Dee or Dok Bua?
Ate at Dok Bua yesterday. Delicious. Had papaya salad and chicken w/ basil and chili. We sent the papaya salad back twice because it wasn't hot enough, but alas, 3rd time was a charm to say the least.
Highly recommended.
O'Sullivans rant..
Maybe my expectations were too high to begin with, but after my first experience there tonight I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. Started with a round of beers and the appetizer platter. Fries were good, different obviously and some salt or stronger seasoning could help, but nevertheless pretty decent. Onion rings were good, cooked well done so they were quite crispy which I especially enjoyed. Buffalo Chicken Tenders were ok, pretty standard items. Blue cheese dressing was a little bland, but I was satisfied thus far.
Onto the burger. I ordered the Black and Blue, medium, with everything on it. Looked fairly appetizing when it arrived. After a few bites I realized that 'medium' must have meant well done to them because there was absolutely no sign of pink inside the patty. The meat was very dry and I was ashamed to have to put ketchup on it just to moisten it up. The black pepper crust was nice and tasty, but considering the dimensions of the burger, they should have worked black pepper in when they made the patty to give the overcooked meat some flavor. The blue cheese was a total disappointment. They slathered it over the lettuce like it was a burger topped with a salad. A burger with blue cheese should have the stinky stuff melting all over the patty (see Tessaro's on the Pittsburgh board, mmm). The dressing, as mentioned above had hardly any flavor. I think I'm tasting the onions more than anything else. In the end, I was let down. I may go back again someday, but for the time being, I think my money will be better spent exploring the other famed burgers of the Boston Metro area.
WHERES THE BEST CHICKEN PARM IN BOSTON?
I did and I was thoroughly dissapointed. I have had a few of their other subs which I thought were awesome, so I was very excited to try their chicken parm. Sadly enough, I thought the chicken breading tasted very off and the sauce had no taste to compliment the chicken. Surely enough, i will stick to their other sub offerings from now on.
CON SOL in Cambridge
On Broadway at Columbia. Looks like it's open for lunch and dinner. Anyone been? I heard this used to be the original Atasca? Still the same owners?
Central Square Lunch Spot?
The Tavern is always a safe bet. A little pricey for bar food, but I always feel good walking out.
Moody's Falafel Palace is good, quick, and cheap too.
Cinderella's does quality Italian subs and their calzones are amazing. They also have a couple of pasta specials everyday which are very reasonably priced.
As mentioned above, India Pavilion, Shalimar, Desi Dhaba and the Bengali Cafe are as good as it gets for a buffet lunch.
Korean BBQ
I may get some flak for this, but I've had Korean BBQ at a couple places in Boston and Cambridge, Koreana and Yasu more recently, and I found they were nothing special. Relatively fresh meat, good number of sides, pretty standard for what they charge. However, I never seem to get enough to eat at any of these places.
I've found that I am much happier making Kalbi and Bulgogi at home (very simple) with a pot of rice and a jar of kimchi so I can eat till I pass out.
Best Steak under $20
I have a craving for beef, but as always, I'm on a budget. Any recs for the best place to get a mouth-watering piece of meat for under $20? Suburbs and chains are excluded, of course, but any other restaurants in Boston, Cambridge, Brookline, etc. will be considered. Please refrain from Boston Chowhound favorites (e.g. NO EAST COAST GRILL!) and I'd prefer not to have to dress up, although that shouldn't be an issue at $20/plate.
Thanks!!
best burger in cambridge/somerville?
I generally order med. rare unless I know and trust the establishment, then I will ask for it rare. I've tried both ways at MOS and it never gets darker than pink. I think the patty is just to thin to control this repeatedly.
As for toppings, the burger/bun ratio is just too low at MOS, so too much ketchup becomes a necessity. Good thing I'm more than happy to order the beef skewers (rare) instead. =)
best burger in cambridge/somerville?
I'm going to have to vote against Miracle of Science. I have had their cheeseburger and Roni Burger a couple times and I'm thoroughly unimpressed. Small patty, plain and uninspired toppings, very little flavor. Plus they burn the homefries almost everytime. Shameful.
I'd much prefer The Tavern up the street which has an incredibly good Blue Cheese and Bacon Burger. Always juicy and delicious. When you order it rare or med. rare, the patty is more than big enough to get that extra taste. Plus it comes with fries or onion strings.
Bartley's is respectible, not worth waiting for, but not a bad value for what you get.
Roadtripping thru Caifornia to Seattle!
Not sure where you're from, but if it's outside of California you'll need to stop at In N Out Burger at least once. And if you try it once, your stomach will need it again. Of course, you probably already know this if you're from CA.
best of Boston (high & low) for a week-long trip
You might hit up the lunch buffet at Desi Dhaba. Can't go wrong there for 6.95. The menu changes daily, but the quality is consistantly high.
Right at the intersection of Mass Ave. and Main St.
Boston's Best Burgers?
I'm surprised no one has mention The Tavern in Central Sq. They have an incredible stuffed bacon/blue. Bacon slices are stuffed into the meat then the burger is topped with melted blue cheese. Pure awesomeness.
Comes with decent onion strings, fries, or 1/2 and 1/2 if you ask.
Used to be 8.50, but they raised it to 9.95-ish in the past year.
Still a great fix when you get the craving, and definitely my choice over the miracle of science...
hidden meal deals in boston?
As opposed to the more recent threads which aren't giving any good tips on true hidden meal deals...
Whiskey's on Boylston has 10 cent wings M-Th from 5-10 along with 2 dollar-ish appetizers. I believe the specials are only at the bar though.
The wings aren't anything to rave about, but you can't argue the value.
Also, I thought I saw a sign at Tommy Doyle's in Kendall Square for a 14.95 twin lobster dinner on Tuesday evenings.
