Best truffle dish in SF/Bay Area?

D'oh! Thanks for the input. Although I'm eager for the dinner, it may be better to wait until the season is at its peak.

Best truffle dish in SF/Bay Area?

As an unexpected but extremely exciting Valentines gift, my parents volunteered to treat my honey and I to a truffle dinner somewhere in SF or the Bay Area (not tonight, obviously, but sometime in the future). This could be either a special truffle tasting menu or just a stupendous dish with truffles.

Since I don't consume truffles on the regular, I thought I'd put to the question to you all: what do you think is the best truffle dish in SF?

Do you know of any truffle tasting menues happening now or in the next month or so?

Or is this the wrong time entirely, and we should wait until next fall?

Any thoughts you have would be much appreciated!

Lightening homemade ice cream

I received an ice cream maker for Christmas and i'm loving it. I just made David Leibovitz's Salted Butter Caramel Ice cream (http://www.davidlebovitz.com/archives...) , and it's *to die for.* My entire household is trying to eat healthier in the new year, however, and I don't want to sabotage everyone's diets with constant quarts of irresistible, fat-laden ice cream.

Does anyone have any tips on the best way to lighten up homemade ice cream? I was thinking of experimenting with 2% milk, half and half, and cutting down sugar. I don't want to make fat-free, chemical-laden stuff, but rather a balanced ice cream that preserves as much of the original flavor and texture of the original recipe as possible, while cutting down on fat and calories.

I'm also planning to experiment with frozen yogurts and sorbets, so any tips on those would be welcome also!

Favorite Sandwich Cookbook?

Hello there, I'm trying to expand my sandwich repertoire. I'm usually pretty boring (ie turkey with lettuce and mayo on whole wheat), and i think i'm wasting perfectly good opportunities to eat something exceptionally yummy. does anyone have a cookbook or other source they use for sandwich ideas? i think once i get the ball rolling i'll be able to experiment on my own, but i need some ideas to get started.

i'm looking for things generally, on the leaner/healthier side, but special occasion sandwich recipes/ideas are welcome too.

thanks!

Abode or Musha or...?

abode has amazing food that might get lost in the drunkenness - maybe if you did the bar menu? they do have amazing cocktails, though.

i think musha is more fun and casual, and would be my choice for a place to get my drink on.

abode is also waaaaaay more pricey than musha.

HIKO SUSHI | Great sushi, Heartbreaking Experience [moved from LA board]

there was no need for the chef to be rude, but i do think it would have been more respectful to ask first. i'm an avid photographer and and i always ask before taking pictures in a private establishment.

Fun Date Place on the Westside

i like musha - fun atmosphere, not too pricey, and the food certainly stimulates conversation.

3 Square Cafe in the a.m.

i too, find the breakfast yummy, but oh so heavy! the pretzel rolls are amazing, as is the trio of small sandwiches - but definitely don't go here if you're in the mood for something light.

also, no the best for vegetarians.

Danny's Deli on windward in venice

i've been there, but i haven't tried any of the dishes you ask about. my boyfriend had the falafel burger, though, and he really liked it.

i thought the food was pretty good (esp the homemade potato chips), and love the location, but was a little astounded by the prices. if you're not concerned about money, i think its definitely worth a try.

Can I wear jeans to Providence?

i wore jeans and a nice top, and while no one gave me any trouble, i did end up wishing i was wearing something nicer...but i'm also from the east coast, and wince when people wear baseball hats in restaurants.

i say err on the side of dressy - dining at providence is an occasion!

ocean and vine or abode for cozy anniversary dinner?

help me decide between ocean and vine and abode for a cozy anniversary dinner in santa monica. my honey and i are getting a massage at 5:30pm, so we're looking for a dinner place that will be cozy and romantic, not too stuffy or uncomfortable. we're getting the massage at exhale (2nd and arizona), so we'd like someplace we can walk to from there.

i thought ocean and vine seemed nice from the website, and i've heard such great things about abode...i'm just not sure which suits the occasion better. money's not an issue.

any advice would be great! i'm also open to other suggestions in the area.

thanks!

post-show dinner downtown

i'm going to see a show downtown tomorrow night, and i'm looking for a place to dine (preferably downtown, or between downtown and the westside) after the show (10pm).

i've been loving izakaya lately, and have recently been to haru ulala and ebisu, both of which i liked. i really wanted to try izayoi, but i don't think its open late.

any suggestions?

additional information: its my birthday, so i'm looking for someplace nice-ish (just not a total dive). also, my bf is a quasi-vegetarian who eats fish, but not other meat.

thanks!

UPDATE: Veggie Mole Enchilada Dinner party

I just wanted to let you all know that the veggie enchilada recipe tips I asked you for last week did not go to waste!

I ended up skipping the tofu idea, and going with a vegetable recipe (couldn't do cheese, as we had a vegan in the house). I used this recipe for pumpkin enchiladas with mole, from simon rimmer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/dat...

I used the mole negro paste i got down in mexico, so assembly was pretty easy. i also used corn tortillas and fried them, as per another chowhound recommendation. they were great!

i skipped the ceviche (due to a pregnant friend...i wasn't sure if questionably cooked shellfish would be a good idea), and instead made these chipotle shrimp tostadas from rick bayless:
http://www.fronterakitchens.com/cooki...

i found the creaminess to be a bit overwhelming, but some of the guests loved them.

we drank cooks illustrated margaritas and finished with bars of lime tequila chocolate. yum!

oh, and i used the mexican rice recipe also from cooks illustrated - it was perfect! my first time making it, too.

everything was great, and tips from this board were a big help. thanks guys!

Fondue Problem

yes, i think it might have been a bit too much wine. i wouldn't boil it, as that may cause the fondue to separate. what kind of wine did you use? if it was too sweet, that may also be part of the problem.

i've had great luck with the recipe from epicurious:
http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/rec...

i hope it goes better next time!

Fresh lime juice

I'm planning on making fresh margaritas and ceviche for an upcoming dinner party, and would love to avoid juicing 2 cups of lime juice by hand. does anyone know where i can get fresh lime juice, preferably in west LA? or at least bring my own limes and get them juiced?

thanks!

Enchilada Novice help? (veggie)

Thank you guys so much for your advice!

I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do, but I'll report back next week after the dinner party and let you know how it turned out.

Thanks again!

Enchilada Novice help? (veggie)

I don't have much experience cooking Mexican cuisine, but a recent trip south of the border left me inspired (and with a jar of Oaxacan Mole Negro). I'd like to cook up some enchiladas for a dinner party next week, but one of the guests doesn't eat meat, and tofu seemed like a better substitute than fish. Does anyone have any tips on basic enchilada making, or on utilizing tofu in enchiladas? Or maybe I should just do them with mixed veggies?

I've looked at tons of recipes for enchiladas on line but most of them involve making your own mole or using meat. I feel like I'm over complicating a fairly simple endeavor, but I'm also feeling a little lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Review - The Counter

i saw this post and had to reply - i've been to the counter a few times, usually with a friend who insists on going because she loves the sweet potato fries (which are darn good). i agree with other chowhounders that the burgers are ok, but not amazing.

the reason i am NEVER going back to this restaurant is the service. the first couple of times we went, we simply had mildly poor service - slow, forgotten toppings/drinks etc. not good but i'm usually not so picky about this stuff. the last time i went however, was for dinner on a sunday. we were prepared to wait, but they had us (about about 25 other people) waiting for over an hour, while they cleared the entire restaurant before they did the next seating. they literally waited for every table to empty before they sat anyone else. some tables were sitting empty and bussed for over 30 minutes. than they sat all of us who had been waiting within about 5 minutes of each other. i've never seen anything like it, and it was very frustrating for a hungry diner with sore feet.

once they did seat us, the service was slow (maybe because they sat the entire restaurant at once?), they forgot a take-out order, didn't check to see if we wanted 2nd drinks, and had run out of the sweet potato fries that my friend had been craving.

never again.

Recipes with Hummus

i use hummus to make a healthy and creamy salad dressing - just mix it with rice wine vinegar and a little salt and pepper until you get your desired consistency.

you can vary the flavor of the dressing by the flavor of hummus (pesto, olive etc).
