Thanksgiving in Cleveland

Thanks, Stuart! Looks like the West Side is still having most of the culinary fun.

I made reservations for us at Table 45, will try to hit up some of the rest of the scene while i'm in town for the long weekend and mom and dad are sound asleep in their respective easy chairs...

Thanksgiving in Cleveland

Hi, OP here,

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I'm definitely looking for restaurants that will be open and serving on Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving in Cleveland

Looking for a nice place to take my parents. When I'm in town we usually wind up at Moxie, which is always nice, but i'd love to try something. Any suggestions for the East Side or downtown?

Himalayan Salt Plate ideas?

Was just gifted a Himalyan Salt Plate for my birthday. It's quite beautiful, but aside from wondering how the heck I'm going to carry this heavy thing home on the subway, i have no idea what I'm going to do with it once I schlepp it up 4 flights of stairs...

Vague instructions included say that the plate can be heated in the oven for use as a cooking surface to add an enhanced mineral flavor...Anyone have a more specific suggestion to share? Do i just plop the fish on and slide it in the oven?

Thanks and happy holidays to all!

Piquant on Flatbush Ave.

Hey so we wandered over on Sunday night. There was a fairly lively scene at a beautiful bar that replaced the deli counter when this was MItchells. The room is warm, the Park Slope Margaritas are $8 and very tasty. I actually had a hard time choosing from the large menu - but i went with the salmon, which came medium, like i'd ordered it, and in a flavorful sauce with tons of roasted veggies. My friend had the veggie chili, which was very spicy and delicious. It's a great addition to the neighborhood, i'll definitely be back to try brunch, but it was a bit pricey for a casual meal...i think they'll do well. it's a huge improvement on Mitchells which tried to be everything (steakhouse/deli/jazzclub/belly dancing/gourmet pizza, etc. etc.) to everyone.

Celiac Dining

Not on the UES, but very tasty...Nizza has special Celiac-appropriate menu, on 9th ave between 43rd and 44th.

Staff Holiday Lunch in/near SOHO

Hi, All

I'd like to take my staff out for a good time but can't afford to blow the kind of cash that has gone out the door in previous years.

I'm looking for someplace fun (it's a relatively young group) where i can pre-order a bunch of appetizers and let them pick a main course in the $15-$20 range. Open to all cuisines as this is a pretty adventurous bunch...any thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks

Mail Order Source for "Real" Grits

I'm not sure what authentic grits are, but I have Southern friend pining away for the real thing.

Thanks!

Any recs for Lawton, OK?

We'll be in Lawton, OK for Labor Day weekend...is there any place there worth seeking out?

Thanks!

Any new ideas for salmon cakes?

Hubby has requested salmon cakes for dinner. Mine tend to have the consistency of hockey pucks and no pizazz...Anybody use something other than the standard breadcrumb, green onion, mayo, mustard method?

Thanks!

German Brotchen in the US

Trader Joe's has decent pumpkin seed rolls sold in bags by the baguettes. I won't say they're the real deal, but my honey (er ist ein Berliner!) have them most weekends for breakfast.

When I was an exchange student in Germany my host family owned a bakery/konditerei that was right downstairs from our apartment. When I got off the plane back home after six months away my parents did not recognize me i'd gained so much weight! Have yet to lose it...

Lite but Tasty Cookbook

I own several hundred cookbooks, but nothing of the "diet" variety, and it's beginning to show.

Can you recommend your favorite go-to cookbook when it's time to cut back a little? I'm looking for something truly inspiring, that's going to distract me from all the books on my shelf...

We eat fish but no other meat, if that helps...

Hamburg 50th Birthday Dinner for 20-25

I'm in NYC trying to plan my husband's 50th b-day party in Hamburg this coming May.

We'd like to do a sit down menu some place with good food and a casual atmosphere, preferably in Ottensen or another neighborhood with some decent bar/night club options for the after party...

It's been 7 years since we left the Hansa-Stadt, any recommendations would be most welcome!

Non-Alcoholic Cocktails for New Years?

Thanks for all the terrific ideas! It'll be hard to choose!

Alternatives to shrimp stock?

Our Whole Foods will save off a bag of shrimp shells for me if I call a day or two ahead. Maybe ask at your local seafood market?

Non-Alcoholic Cocktails for New Years?

Looking forward to a baby-boom in 2007, half my female guests on New Year's Eve are pregnant...

Any ideas for fancy non-alcoholic cocktails that won't make the moms-to-be feel like they're being left out of the festivities?

already cooked beets from Trader Joe's-

I use them for beet and goat cheese risotto. Since I don't have to cook the beets myself, I can throw this together for a weeknight meal.

Delonghi Range with Convection Oven Anyone?

Wow...thanks for the insight! we have a tiny apartment, so any additional noise in the kitchen would drive us crazy anywhere in the house. Looks like we're going with the Viking!

Delonghi Range with Convection Oven Anyone?

I only have room for a 24" stove in my NYC kitchen. My crappy old stove is finally dead (yeah!) and I'm in the market for something a little finer...

The only 24" convection oven gas ranges on the market that I can find are the Viking and one made by Delonghi. I found lots of reviews on the Viking, but none on the Delonghi. It's half the price of the Viking, but I'm wary of making such a big investment in a brand that I know nothing about.

Any info you might have would be much appreciated!

Help for Salmon Chowder

I'd like to make a hearty salmon chowder tomorrow, now that it's finally soup weather in NYC...i've got salmon, leeks, potatoes, fresh fennel and fish stock, but i've no idea what to season the soup with. Any suggestions? We eat fish but not meat, so I can't go the bacon/smoked ham hock route.

Thanks!

Holiday lunch for 20-25 near Secaucus/Lyndhurst

We are on for lunch at Roma!

Again, many thanks, you really saved me...though our admin was very confused when they faxed over the "funeral menu"

Holiday lunch for 20-25 near Secaucus/Lyndhurst

Wow! Thanks so much! I'll start dialing right now...

Holiday lunch for 20-25 near Secaucus/Lyndhurst

Help! I need to schedule a holiday lunch for our team near Secaucus/Lyndhurst NJ.

Does anybody have any ideas where we could get a private room and decent food (at about 15-20 a head with beer and wine)?

Very flexible on cuisine as long as its nearby and tasty.

Help! Thai Curry

Have you tried adding fish sauce? I use a teaspoon or so and it seems to round out the curry flavor. I just use regular Taste of Thai curry and it seems to work out pretty well...

Trader Joe's Chocolate

Now that NYC has finally been blessed with a Trader Joe's, I'm overwhelmed by the variety of chocolate at the checkouts...what you hounds prefer for baking? The Ghiradhelil? The Belgiam pound plus? Something else? I make make more pots de creme and chocolate bread pudding, but occassionally I venture deeper into my Cake Bible...
