Looking for a flexible, offbeat caterer in or near Northampton, MA?
I've heard good things about Pengyew (http://www.pycatering.com)
Gourmet Hotdogs/Hamburgers close to Western, Massachusetts?
GRUB in Northampton has a couple of dressed up hot dogs (chicago style, etc) on their menu:

Smithsonian Chowder House in Hatfield, MA
Lunch options in Hatfield are pretty limited. There is either 127 Elm or FishTales--and this place is a big step up from either. I haven't tried any of the chowders, but the soups I've tried (Turkey Barley, Chicken & Rice) have been great. Nothing revolutionary or mind-blowing, but definitely good, solid, tasty soup. The were rich & flavorful with a generous amount of meat and definitely seemed to be homemade.
They also have really amazing cupcakes. Like, better than any cupcake I've had in Northampton or Amherst. DELICIOUS. seriously.
They've been pretty busy when I've gone in and there isn't much seating--more of a to-go place. Definitely worth a visit, though!
Jamaican or Caribbean in Western Mass
what? I can't believe I've never noticed this place. Where is it exactly? I can't really see it on streetview--is it a small green place? Is it sit-down/menu style? What else do they have?
You might want to also check out this thread (i posted there about another Jamaican place in Spfld):

Dining Changes in Amherst, MA
So has White Hut opened yet in Amherst? Anyone tried it?
Also, anyone been to the relocated Chez Albert? I actually never went to the old one, but I had a small meal at the new location a few days ago and frankly... it was really disappointing. Like, pretty bad. Maybe they're still working out the kinks? I'm curious to hear from someone who is familiar with the old location if the quality has changed...

Coco's in Easthampton MA
one hitch--it's actually in Easthampton, not Amherst. I think they're opening this weekend, but still don't see a menu online.
Dining Changes in Amherst, MA
Haha, okay fine... but can you give a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttle bit more of a description. I mean, many places have carne asada and homemade salsa. What is good about theirs? How does it compare to Veracruzana (using that as a reference point, not the gold standard..)
Coco's in Easthampton MA
I heard it was "new American" and that they would have, among other things, fried chicken. The Facebook page shows arugula salad, beignets, fried green tomatoes, and ricotta gnocchi.

Wow. Not to hate on the Gazette, but that's not even a review... she quotes her own children!
Yelp doesn't make it sound worth a visit, either.

What's tasty for eats in Springfield or W. Springfield MA for a three day visit?
No, the taco truck is in Springfield on Belmont Ave (355 Belmont Avenue) It's close to the vietnamese restaurants, though. Probably an 8 min drive from white hut or 5 mins from downtown springfield.
Taco Trucks in Springfield
Yes. There is a taco truck in the FoodZone International Supermarket on Belmont Ave (pretty close to the X). I recommend the tacos de carne enchilada. They also have lengua and cabeza, as well as chicken. And They make tortas, too. And I think Quesadillas? All their own tortillas, fillings, hot sauce, etc. I think it's there every day, not sure about the hours--maybe 12--9pm? Definitely there mid-afternoon to evening. Just drive by and you'll see it.

I second (or third, rather) White Hut and Vinh Chau or Pho Saigon. I'm also going to recommend that taco truck in the Foodzone suermarket parking lot if you need something less business-y or quick. Plus, if you're traveling solo, eating at a taco truck alone is never uncomfortable/awkward....
@andytee--where is the Puerto Rican sandwich shop? What do you get there?

Wow, haven't heard about any of this. Please keep us updated if you hear anything!
I need a little help from my springfield area friends
Okay, I tend to agree that Vinh Chau's pho is superior, but if you're looking for a dish that any American will like, try the shaking beef at Pho Saigon. It's UNBELIEVABLY delicious. Cubed supertender beef cooked in a wok (thats where the term "shaking" comes from, I think) with some addictive marinade and then served hot over watercress and slices of onion. I feel comfortable saying that ANYONE would love it. It is 100% ADDICTIVE and it keeps me going back to Pho Saigon, even though there is better pho across the street. Seriously foodwall-worthy. It is one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten.
That said, I think anyone could appreciate pho. Just try it.

Creative Rehearsal Dinner IdeasNnear-ish to Springfield, MA Needed
Or what about Indian food? You could take them to Pintu's in West Springfield and avoid the offending Springfield neighborhoods while also not driving 25 minutes for dinner. I don't know if your in-laws would try Indian, but it's certainly nice enough and in a decent area. Could be a good fit for a quirky wedding?

Hmm, well try out Jamaican Blend and let me know what you think!
I can't believe more people aren't excited about the taco truck. It's really good!!!
Where can I buy heart+lung in hartford, ct or springfield, ma area?

oh man. We're talking about beef lung, right? Have you called Hatfield Beef Co? A little farther north, but worth a try...
The only other thing I can think of is maybe some random international market would have something? Or you could try calling a slaughterhouse directly. Or a farm...
But I did just find this: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/190980
Old, but might be helpful.

Have you tried Arnold's Meats in Chicopee? I dont specifically know that they have heart & lung... but if they don't, i'm sure they would be able to tell you who does have it...
Greenfield MA. new restaurant
I heard from a friend who went that it's really good. Apparently they grind their own meat and offer beef, of course, but also pork. And I guess there are a lot of different toppings, including grilled habaneros, which sounds pretty awesome to me.
Overview of Springfield / Holyoke / Lower Pioneer Valley
okay, I'm not totally sure what talk of the town is, but the address that comes up when you google it is the address of what is now a Golden Krust (chain) bakery. When did that place close? What did they have? Jamaican blend is right across the street.
Overview of Springfield / Holyoke / Lower Pioneer Valley
While I haven't actually gotten around to visiting many of the places on that map, I do have a few that I think are worth adding.
-Jamaican Blend - on Wilbraham Rd. This place has the classics (jerk chicken, curry goat) I've also seen some more unusual stuff, like goat head soup. It might not be up to NY standards, and the dishes I've had could definitely be spicier, but it's satisfying and the only decent Caribbean food in the Pioneer Valley area--that I've had anyways! The curry goat is served with chunks of bone, of course, yum yum. It's pretty much just take out--order at the counter and the food is served in styrofoam to-go containers. There is also a Golden Krust (Caribbean chain) across the street, and a market nextdoor that carries some Caribbean stuff. Definitely worth a visit!
-There is a taco truck in the parking lot of Food Zone on Belmont St in Forest Park (kinda near the X) that is pretty decent. They make their own corn tortillas (the tiny ones) and salsa and have a good variety of fillings--lengua, res, cabesa, enchilada, al apastor. Also on the menu are quesadillas and a torta milanesa. The guy running it told me they are usually there until about 8:30pm. Check it out!
-While we are talking about food near the X, there is also a little asian market right across from pho saigon (so, nextdoor to Vinh Chau) that has some interesting stuff: duck & quail eggs, mustard greens, watercress, bao that they get from NY, rice noodles & wrappers.... sometimes they have cool fruit. The people who work there are really nice and helpful, too.

Good/cheap eats between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Rapid City
I'm driving from Minneapolis to Rapid City in June, and I'm looking for some interesting places to stop on the way. Anyone know any delicious and inexpensive places to eat along the way? Especially around the Rapid City area, and I am especially interested in any regional specialties or anything unusual or unique.
Thanks!
Hound Honeymoon?
then yeah, I would highly recommend Portland ME. It will be a nice escape from DC.
Although, the north shore isn't a bad idea either. Great fried clams!
Latinos, Amherst MA
It is the place behind the moan n dove.
Their menu says the cuban has pulled pork, which isn't "authentic," but who knows.. I have heard good things about their tacos.
Hound Honeymoon?
It's not Southern NE, but I'd recommend Portland, ME area. Scenic + Fantastic Dining. Although, you didn't mention what time of year--it's slightly less scenic in January.
