Private room (20ish)

Just an update...I'd already picked a place by the time many of these recommendations came in, so I can't make a great comparison, but in case someone else is looking for something similar.

We ended up going with Domenica - they were the most flexible with us on minimums size of party, menu options, etc. We had a GREAT experience with them.

They were really accoomodating from A-to-Z. We ended up bumping up from 20 to 30 (and actually had to request an extra place in the room night-of), and were in a little room off the kitchen. We got started late (took everyone awhile to navigate around parades to get to the restaurant, and our server was amazing at keeping up with drink orders while people trickled in and no one was seated.

I got raves on the food - we did family style on a few appetizers (including huge - and delicious - cauliflowers with whipped goat cheese, salad, clams & speck, and an octopus carpaccio), and a la carte on entrees (a really rich chicken, a fish I don't remember, a simple pizza) and desserts. Total (including gratuity & tax) came to just over $100/person, which felt completely reasonable considering the amount & quality of food, and a completely open bar with us there for over 4 hours.

The only negative I could say was that it was LOUD, but we did have the room at capacity - and luckily, our guests thought that was kind of fun.

Highly recommended.

Private room (20ish)

I am coming into town for a conference in February and am setting up a business dinner for around 20 people. Preference for locations that are convenient to the Hilton Riverside and would have a private room. Some flexibility on pricing; all types of food OK. It will be a Sunday night.

I know that's pretty open-ended, but thought I'd see if anyone has any recommendations off-hand.

Best lunch spots

Tria is a good suggestion. The salads are good, and it's a nice, more upscale casual. HipCityVedge gets a lot of good feedback, but it's VERY casual and much more of a take-out option.

Friday night with some San Francisco foodies...where would you book?

I love Zahav, but if you want to show them something different, go with Vedge. Especially since you note that they have an appreciation for "healthy cooking" - Vedge is definitely not 100% healthy, but it is real, fresh food.

Best fries?

My favorite Sweet Potato fries are at Khyber.

food related destinations

I don't know for sure about Yards, but Philadelphia Brewing Company (which I generally prefer to Yards) definitely has free samplers for all visitors on Saturday afternoons.

It's a little less convenient to get to, but if you are interested in a brewery, worth the trip.

Good Bar for a Large Group of People

To be fair, it's been several years, but last time I was there on a Saturday night it was a mob-scene dance party. In my experience, the Saturday night vibe was VERY different from a weeknight one.

Gift certificate recommendation for relatives (advice needed for an out-of-towner)

Another option that gives them multiple restaurant choices is to do one for the Safran/Turney restaurants (Barbuzzo, Jamonero, Lolita, Little Nonna's). It's not as MANY choices as Starr/Garces, but they're high quality choices, and very "Philly". They sell them online here:

Lunch around Rittenhouse Square

What about Tria? It's definitely a different (more casual) atmosphere than the 2 you mentioned, but it's a great menu for a light - but delicious - lunch.

Meeting for Saturday Breakfast/Brunch between Lambertville and Fishtown?

I'm not hugely familiar with much in that area, but I do like Hop Angel.

I believe Barbuzzo's antipasto bar was one and done (it's been a little bit, but they just brought me an assorted plate).

That being said, it was excellent.

BRunch Suggestions Please: Easy street parking

I like Kraftwork's brunch (in Fishtown). Nothing fancy, but solid. I don't know if they take reservations (I kind of doubt it), but I don't think I've ever waited more than a few minutes. Parking would be easy.

Weekday lunch for 3 Amada or Dandelion?

It's been awhile since I've gone, but I LOVED Amada's lunch special. It's not tapas, but it was fantastic. I'd pick them over Dandelion any day.

Best Salad in the City

(Good) salad is one of my favorite foods. There are really a TON of places that do them well, but 2 of my (slightly surprising) favorites in casual places are any of the choices at either Cantina (Dos Segudos or Los Caballitos) and Khyber.

Festive birthday dinner w/bf and two college-age children - La Calaca Feliz? Jamonera? Modo Mio?

I haven't been there in a long time, but I LOVED Bar Ferdinand at that age. On weeknights it was always low-key, but it seemed so classy.

This Saturday in Philly, BYOB Italian or ....

For someone who lives in Philadelphia, it's not all that intimidating to train + cab to a NJ restaurant...but for someone visiting, it seems like an unnecessary hassle, especially given the number of perfectly awesome restaurants we have within the city.

I agree with Modo Mio, based on the Italian BYOB question, although there are tons of options if they open it up to a wider question.

Festive birthday dinner w/bf and two college-age children - La Calaca Feliz? Jamonera? Modo Mio?

I've really wanted to like La Calaca Feliz, but both times I've been there, I've felt the food was only OK, and way too expensive for OK.

Of those options, I would think Jamonera would be fun. Modo Mio is a very nice meal, but a very different feel.

Neighborhood place in rittenhouse square

Those 2 are 2 of my favorites, on opposite ends of the casual scale.

Jane G. v. Han Dynasty report.

Thanks for the review! I LOVE spicy food, but have been hesitant to give Han a try because it all just LOOKS to oily...and I hate oily.

Sounds like Jane G might be more up my alley, then.

Bar Food Philadelphia

I tend to eat in bars more than restaurants - we have some really, really good ones.

SPTR & Khyber, as mentioned, are definitely two favorites. Off the top of my head, a few others: Kraftwork & Memphis Taproom (Fishtown) or Sidecar, Resurrection, and Grace Tavern (Graduate Hospital-ish).

There are many, though!

Good place to stop before a show at the Electric Factory

Llama tooth is enjoyable when it's warm out because of the large patio, and the staff is very nice. Aside from that, the food is OK (I would put it on par with any standard bar food), and the service can be unbelievably slow. I would like to recommend it because they've always been SO welcoming when I've been there, and I really enjoy the outdoor space...but I'm not sure it's reliable, time-wise, before a show, and you can find better food elsewhere.

Best Ethiopian

Abyssinia is my favorite, food-wise. Be prepared for spotty and slow service, though. It never bothered me as long as I went into it prepared to be there awhile.

suggestion for tonight?

I second Khyber, although it could be pretty busy on a Friday night, and it can be pretty loud.

Monte Carlo in Philadelphia

I cannot find a brunch menu to verify that it is still there, but believe North 3rd has either a Monte Cristo or Monte Carlo at brunch.

It's been awhile, but in my memory it was good.

Bar restaurants around Philadelphia convention center in walking distance

I've eaten at Misconduct a number of times...It's fine, but that's about it. I wouldn't shy away from a meal if I was there anyway (which I am fairly regularly because it's good for watching sports, and convenient to a number of friends), but I wouldn't go there specifically for the food.

Monday Birthday Lunch After Barnes Museum

The Rittenhouse Tria is open for lunch 7 days a week. I love it there, but it is pretty casual.

Koo Zee Doo vs Tinto

How big is their group? I like both, but would recommend Koo Zee Doo for a large group (4-5+), but Tinto if it's just 2 of them.

Locations for monthly dining group?

KooZeeDoo is great with a group. You can try pretty much everything, for a reasonable price, with that many.

Dinner near Society Hill Playhouse

I love Supper. I don't know that I would really call it adventurous, but it I've had really good food there. Great desserts, too.
