Closed Good Friday?

I have been prowling this site looking for great places for my trip to Toronto over Easter weekend, and many of the top rates places seem to be closed on April 9 for Good Friday. I tried Splendido, Nota Bene, Sushi Kaji with no luck. Any ideas?

Best Greek Restaurant in Toronto?

Hi,

I will be in Toronto in 2 weeks and would like to know the *best* Greek restaurant to go to. I really like good pork souvlaki, but the last three places I tried it at the pork was dry... I especially appreciate good lemony potatoes. Any recommendations?

Single on Birthday in April in TO - Where to Go?

Thank you - I am thinking Splendido for the 2nd night. What about Rain? I hear conflicting information about it being open or closed. Is it open? Do they still have a tasting menu?

Single on Birthday in April in TO - Where to Go?

Thanks for the tip - I will remember to do that. As you seem to be in the know, does Splendido have a bar? Or some sort of communal table? I would like to eat there too (the day after my birthday).

Best Easter Sunday Brunch?

I will be in Toronto for Easter Sunday in April - where should I go for the best brunch? (Good croissants are a must). Many places offer a special brunch for Easter, but I haven't a clue how to find out where. And, because it is a holiday, I want to make sure I get reservations for Brunch as far in advance as possible. Any suggestions?

Single on Birthday in April in TO - Where to Go?

Thanks for the recommendation. I was leaning towards Sushi Kaji - but I wasn't sure if the setup would be condusive to a single. It is always better to hear from someone who has been there.

Single on Birthday in April in TO - Where to Go?

I will be in Toronto in April on my birthday and would like a really, really memorable meal. However, I will be by myself and although dining alone doesn't usually bother me, it is for my birthday so I would prefer the occasion be more festive. If I go to Sushi Kaji will it be okay that I am solo? Or Spendido? Can a Chowhound recommend a good place please! (I love Japanese food, or good food of any kind but prefer smaller portions of lots of stuff to big portions of only a few things). Thanks!

If "No Reservations" came to Toronto, where would Anthony Bourdain go?

Thank you for reminding everyone to be thankful for what we have right here. I would love to pontificate on the food of other nations, but I can't afford to go anywhere, so I really, really appreciate that I can try new food experiences in my own province. I don't live in Toronto - I live in the boonies everyone is complaining about, so for me a trip to Toronto is a chance to eat, and eat well. I watch No Reservations. I don't think Tony Bourdain would turn down a chance to eat good food with a bunch of chowhounds. After all, he did go to Las Vegas...

Best Steak in Collingwood/Blue Mountain

Go to the Rockdell if you like a big slab of beef cooked perfectly with a beautifully cooked baked potato and overcooked/non-existent veg. If you are a meat eater you will be in heaven. Vegetarians (or even those who like greens) beware! Their salad bar - the last time I was in - had lettuce, pickles, carrots and celery. But if you want a steak and nothing but - it's perfect. Plus, the service is terrific.

Blue Mountain Resort - Collingwood

I have heard a lot of buzz about Mary's but twice now I have gone in and turned right around again. The first time the place stank of overused grease and the second time it was like hitting a wall of noise. No thank you.

Blue Mountain Resort - Collingwood

Went there with a party of 10 - so maybe not a fair analysis. Some food served cold, others okay. Some too salty, others okay. We did find it a bit noisy. See my review of Largo - much preferred.

Blue Mountain Resort - Collingwood

Had a meal at 3 Guys and a stove in the winter - outstanding halibut served as a stir fry with rice noodles - would recommend it. Service was mediocre and the NOISE. Definity not fine dining, but would recommend it with some reservations.

Collingwood

Catch 22 for seafood, Georgian Bay Family Restaurant for a diner/dive, Cafe Chartreuse for a more upscale breakfast with fresh croissants, Yellow River House for Chinese (good moo shu pork with noodles), Green Mango Tree for Thai fusion, but the best is Largo in Thornbury - overlooks the harbour, amazing atmosphere and the food is top notch. I recommend the antipasto platter for an appetizer - the best appetizer I have ever had in a restaurant! The service can be hit or miss, but the food and atmosphere makes up for it.

I do not recommend the Mill Cafe (overpriced for what you get), Sisi (ditto + the service sucks - I went in alone and was ignored for 10 minutes while the waitress flirted at the bar with the only other 2 customers in the place), Oliver and Bonacini has been hit or miss - outstanding one time, dismal the next. Duncan's should be avoided at all costs. The Huron House is gone...

food in Collingwood/Blue Mountain/Barrie

I have been to Sisi several times since these postings and I have to say I was not impressed. Beild House is good but a bit pricey (their asian dumplings with wasabi served on spoons with sake should not be missed) but I recommend Largo for fine dining. It is in Thornbury - and it overlooks the harbour. Great atmosphere. Service can be hit or miss, but the food and view do not disappoint.

Nice Dinner in Collingwood

Catch 22 for seafood, Green Mango Tree for Thai fusion, Cafe Chartreuse for breakfast, and for fine dining, I would go to Thornbury to Largo. Very nice atmosphere - to rival the best in Toronto - with a view and a patio overlooking Thornbury harbour. Food tends to the sweet side (braised pork tenderloin had a maple glaze and was served with cabbage and root veggies given a blueberry glaze - a bit overly sweet for me but delicious anyway) but the antipasto platter is amazing - better than any appetizer I have had in many five star places... Service can be hit or miss though.

Collingwood ???

Several good restaurants - Catch 22 for seafood, Green Mango Tree for Thai fuison, Cafe Chartreuse for breakfast or paris-style (sort-of) quick dining, but my favourite place in the area is Largo in Thornbury. Patio looks out over the harbour, so it is packed in the summer evenings. Try the antipasto platter. Outstanding. Service is hit or miss though.

Are there any suggestions for good restaurants in Collingwood?

Monsoon is gone, 27th on Fourth has changed hands and chefs - haven't heard anything about it except it's pricey. Between Friends has changed hands too - now it is named something else. Chez Michel was good when it was in Craigleith - haven't tried it since it moved. I recommend Largo in Thornbury - amazing view and good food (try the antipasto platter). The service is hit or miss but the atmosphere makes up for the lack.

Looking for rustic restaurant in Collingwood area

I stopped going to the Alphorn in the 70's...

Looking for rustic restaurant in Collingwood area

I would pass on the bakery (snooty service) and Piper's is okay at night when it is dark but it is really depressing in the daytime. My recommendation for breakfast is The Orchid - good breakfast, good service. I recommend the grilled cheese with back bacon sandwich. They are only open to 3pm though. If you want fine dining in Thornbury go to Largo. It has an amazine patio overlooking the Thornbury harbour and the food is OUTSTANDING. Their antipasto platter was so good I had to go back the next day to have it again. I would also recommend their bread pudding...

Toronto's Signature Dish?

You forgot the back bacon. 'Nuf said.

Toronto's Signature Dish?

Every year since I was a kid (and I am closer to being a senior now than a child) we would go to the CNE - and we would always have back bacon on a bun. No, I would not call it Toronto's signature dish - to do that would ignore all of the wonderful multiculture dishes our fair city has to offer. To ignore it though would be an sad oversight.

North 44 vs. Bymark?

I recently went to North 44 for my birthday - I have to say there were mixed reviews. The service was outstanding, the decor kind of boring, the appetizers (we both had salads - one mixed with braised leeks the other with roasted nuts - don't remember the rest they were completely forgetable), and the mains were excellent and mediocre. I had the shrimp lasagne - the best lasagne I have had anywhere and worth the big ticket price. My partner had the chicken, which was so-so but she said the lentils were the best she had ever had (and then I had to taste - I concurred). Was it worth the big price tag? Not sure. I would go back for the lasagne though...

Casual breakfast near Orillia, off Hwy 11

Barrie Burger on Dunlop Street West in Barrie - just take the Dunlop street west cutoff less than a block off the 400. The atmosphere is lame but food is good. They will even grill your tomatoes if you want.

Diners/Greasy Spoons - what are your best recommendations?

I don't know what type of diner you are looking for, but my family has been going to Fran's for 3 generations for breakfast...
