Trader Joe's Puff Pastry... a Seasonal Item

Chowser made me do it! With threats of hail and thunderstorms, I went to the Ffx TJs to get some puff pastry, before the hoards arrived. Speaking of hoard--they had 25 or 30 packages, and I bought 11!! Yes, that's a bit too much, but it should last awhile, and I was desperate. Thank you, Chowhounders, for sending me out. The hail waited until I was home with my booty.

Trader Joe's Puff Pastry... a Seasonal Item

Long live Chowhound! I was cruising restaurant reviews, and saw this thread. I have been mourning the loss of TJ's puff pastry for 18 months. I mentioned it once to the management, but didn't write in. (Thanks to those of you who did.) After reading word of its return to other locations, I called my local Trader Joe's. It's back in Fairfax, Va!!!! Hooray! I would not have even looked if it hadn't been for this thread, so thanks to all of you for making it pop up on the website.

Is Ton Kiang still good for dim sum in San Francisco?

Thanks to all of you for your good advice. I'll give you a dumpling report after my trip!

Is Ton Kiang still good for dim sum in San Francisco?

Checking the recent threads on dim sum in S.F., Ton Kiang--my favorite a decade ago--is missing. We are returning to S.F. this week, and planned to go back, but will go elsewhere if it's gone downhill. Is it not still the best?

Kirkland (Costco) label wines - anyone tried?

I bought the Kirkland Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignon yesterday and we drank it last night. We could not believe how good it was! It rivals cabs at 2-3 times the price. I may go back tomorrow for a case!

Problem browning (sea) scallops

Neither the Kirkland frozen scallops nor the roadshow scallops is treated with STP. This is a point of pride with Costco, and I've read about it in their magazine (and on the packaging of their frozen scallops.) But both have been frozen, which accounts for the extra fluid. I agree with the recommendation to coat them lightly in flour first--and of course, pat them dry with paper towels after they are thawed. The same divers' scallops, unfrozen, are double the price in a good seafood store, so the frozen option--while not perfect--avoids the chemical "plumping" that takes place in supermarkets.

sending in-laws to dc where should they eat

You may have already decided to send your in-laws for some molecular cuisine at one of the more trendy restaurants, but I would send them to Obelisk, which is chic, relatively informal, and delicious from antipasto to the sweet bites that come with the bill. It represents what's lasting in D.C., which in many respects is a city of transience. In-laws like symbols of permanance! Obelisk is the real deal.

Where can I buy white truffle oil around DC?

By now I hope you've found some. But for looker in the future: online, the price of Urbani 8 oz. (don't even think of buying a smaller bottle--it doesn't last long enough!) is about $30. The Urbani-made 8 oz. at Costco last year was less than $20, but my local Costco doesn't have it yet this year. We can always hope.
Once you buy your big bottle, keep it in the refrigerator, and it will stay very fragrant for at least a year. If Costco doesn't have it this year, I will go online again and buy a few bottles to make it worth the price of shipping. Before opening, keep in a cool, dark place. Nothing transforms risotto or pasta with mushrooms like a long drizzle of white truffle oil!

Where can I buy white truffle oil around DC?

I have found that Urbani white truffle oil is far superior to others. I get it online. But in the "would you believe?" department is the fact that around last Christmas, Costco had it for a really low price! It was manufactured by Urbani with a slightly different label, but the oil, shape of the bottle etc. were the same. Maybe Costco will get it in this season, too. (After you open the bottle, be sure to refrigerate it.)

A recipe for Miss Grimble's Orange Grimbletorte?

You are very sweet to go to the trouble. If you're talking about the 1983 cookbook, I long ago scoured it and there's only an orange (baked) cheesecake in it--no chocolate torte. But that recipe gave me a couple of ideas for the cake filling. I still have the worry that the filling will be more like frosting rather then cheesecake since it can't be baked. I am also considering driving to the Bronx next time I'm in New York! Maybe they would sell me a slice, and I could squeeze some information out of them....

A recipe for Miss Grimble's Orange Grimbletorte?

I think they order it from the Bronx Miss Grimble's establishment. I would love to pry the recipe from someplace. It occurs to me that cheesecake is baked; the filling must be cream cheese frosting rather than cheesecake, right?Hmmm...

A recipe for Miss Grimble's Orange Grimbletorte?

Heavens! The Grimbletorte would cost $100 to ship to Virginia! So I will experiment at home. No cake is worth $100.

A recipe for Miss Grimble's Orange Grimbletorte?

I plan to take everyone's advice. First I will order one (my birthday is coming up) just to remind myself whether it has real grated orange peel in the cheesecake filling, and just how bittersweet the ganache is. And then I will take a stab at replicating it. My only fear is that it isn't as good as I remember it or---heaven forfend--they've stooped to using margarine or some other atrocity in the cake. I look forward to recreating my youth on the Upper West Side!

A recipe for Miss Grimble's Orange Grimbletorte?

I have been craving an Orange Grimbletorte for nearly 40 years, since I moved away from the Upper West Side. I understand Miss Grimble's still makes this cake, but does anyone have the recipe for it? It has chocolate cake layers, orange cheesecake filling, and the layers are soaked in Grand Marnier. Decadent....
