What's your favorite no-salt or extremely low-salt flavoring?
One teaspoon is a lot of salt -- I use less than that in a whole week.... It's frightening to read the sodium counts on prepared foods, and those are based on small serving sizes. Why do manufacturers think everything tastes better with such high levels of salt? Unedible to me.
save the world
Live more simply. Be happy with having less. Create community, share food together often, take walks, declutter and donate what you don't need anymore.
Black Radishes?
Radish sandwiches: Peel, grate, if it's too hot, rinse and squeeze dry. Spread mayo on multi grain bread, put on grated radish and optional lettuce or chopped parsley. Cut into small triangles.
Cancelling Etiquette
What can I say? I've cancelled a few hours before the event myself. Due to exhaustion. I've been told to come back the following night for leftovers -- okay with me. I've also dragged myself to a party and fallen asleep there. Woke up as people were leaving, stayed and helped hostess unwind.
Creamer vs. Half and Half
Why don't you buy him some dish soap while you're there? I was with a friend once while she was buying a new TV. She had plenty of money, but talked the salesman into giving her an "architect's discount" because her son was an architect.
How Do I Keep an Adult Friend Who Has A Very Limited and Unhealthy Diet
Your friend's diet is limited but not that bad. Good enough if she's happy with it -- she's old enough to decide for herself. It's up to you if you want to remain friends. You decide, your choice. What happened to that woman who let her dog eat off her guest's plate? I would befriend her, and work with her dog so it doesn't end up at the pound when it's older and difficult to manage.
Very large whole frozen Arctic Char: Help!
After filleting there is some meat left on the frame. If you have the patience, scrape this meat off the bones using an ordinary teaspoon. Makes great fishburgers.
What are your top 3 sauces to make/eat?
garlic butter, lemon butter, fresh tomato salsa
Made a great dinner tonight, thought I'd tell y'all about it.
ahh.....kneading....I used to do a lot of that back in the days when I worked with clay....
How Do I Keep an Adult Friend Who Has A Very Limited and Unhealthy Diet
Your friend missed her chance in the Hamptons if she only wanted a white collar guy. Blue collar men in the Hamptons (Landscaping, building trades, service providers make very good money. On the other hand, white collar real estate brokers are making zilch. I take it that the Hamptons house share was an "investment".
Ginger Preserves - what to do with them?
Dab some on top of the fruit in a galette before baking. Put a spoonful in sauteed red and yellow peppers. On crackers with blue cheese. A little bit in salad dressing or a sandwich.
Yuca
I like to peel the parboiled yuca and shred it, then make mini-latkes. Serve with tartar sauce. I also make it like garlic mashed potatoes.
Shad roe - who's tried it?
I love it sauteed in butter slowly with a lid on the pan so it cooks through. The chives are up by then, so a few snips of that. I eat it every few years, not every year. I have to make a special trip to the one fish market that sells it, and sometimes they're sold out.
Do you prefer to bake or buy dessert?
I prefer to bake my own but only when I'm entertaining. I love my own undersweetened desserts. And I like to serve them in small quantities on small plates. A sugar miser am I, but somewhat generous with the ice cream.
Natives Raised Eating Legumes:Unaffected by Gas?
Doesn't TONS of ginger make the lentils too spicy to eat? It would be for me --I like it in small quantities. Too much is torture.
what can I do with my kimchee besides stand in front of the fridge and eat it
A cheese log made of cream cheese and chopped kim chee. Serve with crackers, seaweed rice crackers or sesame ones.
Made a great dinner tonight, thought I'd tell y'all about it.
I wish I had your energy! I'm more of a Minimalist.
Eating at an empty restaurant?
I had lunch yesterday at a place that is moderately busy in the winter. (In the summer it's too crowded and we tend to avoid it.) It was a bit emptier than usual, but food and service were fine. Tipped a bit more. No way that this place will go out of business though. It's a pretty solid kind of place.
"Surprise" foodie novels
Incredible food, eh? Too rich, probably. However, Wolfe's creator Rex Stout had a sister Ruth Stout who wrote a couple of organic gardening books -- How to Have a Green Thumb Without an Aching Back" and "Gardening Without Work: For the Aging, the Busy, and the Indolent". Her effortless no dig method consisted of mulching liberally with spoiled hay. In between the garden advice were simple cooking suggestions and stories about country life.
Ides of March party
Those EAR mushrooms, Senate bean soup, ceasar salad eaten with fingers
What else is your go to breakfast besides eggs?
Meow! I see how you get your chow name. Mimosas are a nice treat in the winter with fresh squeezed oranges . At home I like one jumbo egg fried in olive oil, with Alvarado St. multi-grain toast, lots of butter. Eating out, I like to order an omelet or huevos rancheros. Once in a great while I get eggs from someone who keeps chickens in the back yard -- these eggs are the best, I wish they were the norm.
Fresh Salmon Cakes
I use leftover cooked salmon, mixed with finely chopped onion, celery, and fresh dill. Add breadcrumbs, eggs, and a little Old Bay seasoning. Make small patties, fry in olive oil plus some salted butter. Serve with tartar sauce and lemon slices.
Noodles, pickles and peanut butter sushi???
I took a look at the recipe. The combo of ingredients is intriguing -- soba noodles, pickles, peanut butter, and nori. The prep is too fussy and time consuming for me, plus I have limited counter space. I might try this combo with normal boiled noodles, peanut butter dressing, sprinkled with minced garlicky pickles (small amount), and shred some nori (with scissors) on top.
Natives Raised Eating Legumes:Unaffected by Gas?
Since it happened 15 years ago, I don't think the shop closing had to do with the popularity of e-cards.
No McNuggets? - 911 Call
She felt that she was robbed because she didn't get her money back. She felt like a victim of a crime.
No McNuggets? - 911 Call
Correct. I felt sorry for the woman making the complaint. The police in my area seem to respond with a great deal of courtesy even to trivial complaints. I called 911 recently about a scary electrical problem. Two firemen and a police offficer showed up promptly, assessed the situation, and left, saying they were glad I called for my peace of mind and safety.
