Try the Cheese Boutique! From what I remember, they used to sell a range of different sausages!

Gourmeats opening in the Junction

Does anyone know anything about Gourmeats that's having it's formal opening in the Junction, this coming weekend? Wondering if it's a butcher shop or ready to go meals outlet? Sounds like it may be both!

Where to buy hot dog buns

I buy hot dog buns from the vendor at Canadian Tire location on St. Clair, near Keele. He also sells hot dogs. Great guy! :)

Onion and Sage Sausages from Butcher By Nature

Hey Googs, thanks for the reply. Chicken with dressing is a staple in my house, especially in the winter. I never stuff my chicken with sausage but I'm thinking that it's a must try!

Ended up having a Q with some pretty decent sausages that didn't hurt my pocketbook. :)

Onion and Sage Sausages from Butcher By Nature

As a nation, we will be celebrating Canada's 146th Birthday in just 2 days but due to the grey skies, I'm thinking about making comfort food instead of having my usual annual BBQ.

I ventured into Butcher By Nature the other day and came across Onion and Sage sausages. Wondering if anyone has tried them? Not really into the whole organic scene but I'm thinking that they'd be great with a little gravy and mashed potatoes. Wondering if they're worth the price?
(Four links for approx. $12 bucks.) Please let me know if you've tried them or anything close.

Wishing you all a Happy Canada Day!

Where can I get corn grits?

Southern Accent restaurant in Mirvish Village use to advertise them on their website. Not sure if they still sell them. Definitely worth a call. :)

Thanks Christina! I'm actually in Toronto, Canada. My Grandmother's family immigrated from Poland, years ago. I learned to cook at a young age, thanks to her. Sadly, to this day, I am not able to make pierogi at the speed that she did but I'm slowly getting quicker at it. :)

Thanks for posting this recipe Haters! Anything with lemon is always good. I think I'll add this to my Easter menu!

Crappy. There's an old school arena in Toronto and they serve peameal bacon on a bun. Double order of sauteed onions, on that baby and it's like being in dreamland. Definitely worth a drive to the arena, even if it's not for a game. :)

So funny that you say that Gretchen! I'm always delivering food to my neighbours! It's even better when they reciprocate! :)

The boy likes his schnitzel a la carte. I on the other hand put mayo, lettuce and hot (ring) peppers on the bun. It's so good! For the record, the leftovers were eaten this morning and there isn't any left. It was a lovely morning not having to do the bacon and egg thing. :)

Harters, how do you manage to reserve any puddings for another time? They go like hot cakes in my house!

Au Jus

I clearly remember his using a Red Rose tea bag. You would thing that it would be an acquired taste but it was actually very good!

Au Jus

Thanks for clarifying grey. I buy little packets of gravy to add to the drippings, once the roast is done. The wording on the packet is Au Jus. I truly thought that's what it was called! :)

I agree about it being a PITA! On the other hand, having a beer (or 3) while making it, makes it so much easier! :)

I rarely have trouble with the meat being soggy. Perhaps because I fry it at such a high temperature and then pat it with paper towel. I also only use Crisco Oil, which doesn't seem to saturate the meat. On the other hand, when you stick it between an Italian bun, nothing else matters. :)

That sounds like a great dinner! I've never made fried chicken because I always find the thought intimidating! If I were to try, I know I'd muck something up!

LOL - There are 3 of us but one is a teenager who LOVES his Schnitzel! My ulterior motive is to make lots so I don't have to cook breakfast tomorrow! ;)

It's the weekend and I literally live for weekends which are always spent in the kitchen. I cook often but I'm not very adventurous in terms of 'ethnic' foods. Most of my dishes are centered around Eastern European dishes with the exception of Italian which is always a hit in this house.

Tonight I'll be making schnitzel. I usually make about 30 servings. If I'm fortunate, there will be leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

Tomorrow I'll be making Prime Rib which is always amazing! Bring on the horseradish! :) - Looking for ideas for sides. Please and thanks! :)

Can't wait until next weekend! I'm really looking forward to Easter dinner! Polish pork roast with seasonal vegetables, cabbage rolls, pierogi and of course we'll finish the meal off with Kremowka which is a Polish cream cake/pie. Recently renamed Kremówka Papieska when the world found out that it was Pope John Pauls (II) favorite dessert. Yummy is an understatement! Here is an image (Google) of the deliciousness. Hopefully I can manage to NOT screw it up!

Regardless of what you're making, I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

where is the best fish and chips in Toronto/GTA??

My personal fav is Golden Crisp Fish & Chips. It's a family (or use to be) run business. I would call in advance to see if the same owners still run it. :)

Au Jus

I'm making Prime Rib tomorrow and I'm wondering if anyone has a recipe for an Au Jus that is made with a tea bag? Many years ago my parents were friends with a french man. He always made his gravy using a tea bag and it was awesome! Any ideas on how this is made?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions?

Anybody remember Switzers on Spadina?

Wow, I didn't expect to have so many people respond! Thank you! I always thought Switzers was better than Shopsys. There was just something very neat about the atmosphere. My parents use to take me there every Friday night. I'm wondering if anyone remembers the little counter restaurant on Dundas street, around the corner from the Terrace. They made a good corned beef sandwich too. Tops on young street was run by family friends and Aaron made the best Latkes I'd ever had. My Mom also loved his chopped liver. Sadly, I was too young to be able to appreciate the goodness of it. Now I'm much older, I crave such things.

As for Caplanskys, they were on hand for a local festival a couple of years ago and I wasn't impressed. The corned beef sandwich was over priced for the serving size. Perhaps, the fare would be better in house. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to visit Colemans very soon. Hopefully I won't be disappointed! :)

Anybody remember Switzers on Spadina?

It must be my age or something. I've been feeling rather nostalgic about my childhood "food" memories. Feeling like this, I have found myself wanting a true old school corn beef sandwich on rye, the kind I use to eat at Switzers on Spadina. Are there any decent places in Toronto that serve the same type of grub? I've heard of Yitzs and Katzs but I've never been to either. Also looking for beef knish and matzoh ball soup.

Any advice would be great! Thanks!

Gabbys is opening in the Junction!

Thanks a bunch for all the replies! I've never been to 3030 but I've heard that it's a great place to have a few pints. I love Mexican but I didn't enjoy the food from La Revolucion. I did hear that it's great on Karaoke nights so perhaps I should give it another shot. Axis totally sucks, in terms of food and I'd rather grab a slice from V's. I have heard that the Locomotive is awesome so I guess I'll have to check it out!

I think I'll make the effort to check Gabby's out. There really isn't a decent place around here to grab a pint and have a few wings. I suppose that time will tell!

Gabbys is opening in the Junction!

Gabbys will be opening in the Junction, relatively soon and I'm wondering if it's a place to be excited over? In all honesty, there isn't a whole lot of great fare to eat in the neighbourhood. People rave about Vesuvios and while it's good, it has become tiresome after a while. The Friendly Thai is decent but I'm not that adventurous so I really do stick to the Pad Thai which is excellent!

Any feedback on Gabby's ?? Thanks in advance!

Ham Hocks - where did they go?

You should be able to find these at any Polish deli on Roncessvales. Peter is right, Kingsway Meats at Bloor and Windemere sell them as well. I buy a lot of our meats from Kingsway. The place is super clean and everything is always so fresh!
