Going to Two Toms for dinner tomorrow, first time. What to order, what to expect?

Thanks, you saved me a trip! Bad food, bad wine, zero ambience ...but you can stay as long as you want. LOL

Ungrecco, I gotta ask: what makes Byaside Salumeria so great? Before it opened I was expecting an Italian deli along the lines of what you'd find in Corona or Arthur Ave. Instead it seems to be a basic "Boars Head" deli? Please let me know what sets this apart. Not looking for an argument, just curious. Thanks

Dinner NOT in French Quarter

I remember Mandinas from years ago and liked it. I heard good things about Brigsten's. Any thoughts about places in Bywater (Elizabeth's?) or Marigny (Adolfos? Three Muses?)

Dinner NOT in French Quarter

I have a long weekend in NO and I'm looking for a nice place to go for dinner on a Saturday night . Looking for New Orleans food, not too crowded not too expensive. Something in the Garden District? Or near Carrolton? Atchafalaya? Johynny K? Is Mosacas worth the drive? Thanks

Acme vs Pearl vs Casamentos

Thanks everyone.. This has been a great help. I wil look into Pascal Manale's (you are not Pascal are you?) While I have your attention I have another question or two: For a bar to get some crawfish and watch a football game I'd usually go to Frankie & Johnny's but the reviews lately sound terrible? Any suggestions? Assume Domilise's is still good for po boys? Is Mother's worth the wait for my friend who has never been to NO? A better place for Muffalatta's than Central Grocery? And finally, is Mosca's still good? Thanks

I'm heading down in December. Which would you recommned for oysters -- taking into account quality, price and atmosphere. Or is there somewhere else you would suggest?

Thanks

a few questions

I've been to New Orleans many times but not recently. I'm taking someone who has never been, so I'd like some advice: for oysters -- Acme or Pearl? For a bar to get some crawfish and watch a football game I'd usually go to Frankie & Johnny's but the reviews lately sound terrible? Any suggestions? Assume Domilise's is still good? Is Mother's worth the wait for my friend? A better place for Muffalatta's than Central Grocery? Mosca's is still good? Thanks

Good eats in Bayside

Gyro Corner is on Francis Lewis and 33rd Fontana's is good but last few times the gyros were all meat -- no lettuce to speak of.

Good eats in Bayside

Thanks. I don't think I will be heading to Flushing for a regular slice. I will check out a few of the places on Bell - VIPizza, Il Vesuvio and whatever is a few doors down from there. For Chinese, I might just pass on takeout and find a reason to head to Flushing for Spicy Tasty, etc.

BTW- For Greek, how is Avli on Bell and Gyro Corner on Francis Lewis?

Darth-

I was gonna post a separate thread on where to shop for food, so thanks, for jumping in. I went into Milk Farms and it looked good - decent sale prices as well. For supermarkets it looks like we have Waldbaums, Waldbaums or Waldbaums (and Fairway in Douglaston).

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge..great lunch deal for a foodie....

The Manhattan Bridge is not as pretty but why go back and forth over the same bridge? As Patton said "Why pay for the same piece of real estate twice?" Also, walking over the Brooklyn Bridge is slooooow going -- lots of people, gawkers, bikes. Once is fine; twice seems like torture (I bike over both fairly regularly) Also, the south side of the Manhattan Bridge offers something the Brooklyn Bridge doesn't -- a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge..great lunch deal for a foodie....

Here is a suggestion that might accomplish a few things -- start in Chinatown and get some take-out (these boards contain hundreds of suggestions on where to get food in Chinatown and yes, NY Noodeltown is a great suggestion.) Walk across the Manhattan Bridge, which is on Canal Street in Chinatown. When you hit Brooklyn find a nice spot in one of the waterfront parks and chow down.

After lunch walk back to Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge. This way you can get the great view as the previous poster pointed out and burn off lunch.

The bridges are very close in Brooklyn - check out a map.

Good eats in Bayside

I'm a Queens kid who is moving back to Bayside - near Bell and 42 Ave. I'd like some suggestions for good pizza (and good to me is NOT brick oven but old fashioned, outer borough, thin crust, fold it in half, hear a nice crack, no frills slice) decent asian take-out (for nights I am not going to Flushing) Mexican and Greek --other than Fontanas on Franny Lou. Thanks

Outside New Orleans Suggestions

Thanks everybody! Between your responses and the related postings I have a lot to work with. At this point I'm thinking of a big loop -- New Orleans to Lafayette and back through New Iberia and Houma.

Outside New Orleans Suggestions

I'm from New York, have family in New Orleans and have been down there many times over the past 30 years. For the first time, however, I am am going down with extra time and I'd like to do some exploring (food and general) outside of town. I'm looking to eat some basic grub -- gumbo, etouffee, jumbayla, po boys -- and see some sights I normally would not see. I'm thinking that one day I'll head south and check out Grand Isle? and another day head west to Lafayette? New Iberia? Any suggestions for these cities or would you recommned different ones? Thanks!

Mariscada in Green Sauce

The recipe sounds good -- but not quite as thick as what is usually served in restaurants. I might try this with a bit of flour/corn starch whisked in.

Thanks

You are right - Reeds is terrible but Stewart's makes a good one.

Hamburger Express

There was also a Hamburger Express in Jackson Heights - same concept. Better burgers were across the street at The Toddle House -- a miniature luncheonette -- i think a counter with about ten short stools.

Barritt's Ginger Beer - Where can I find it?

I'm a big Barrit's fan as well. But AJ Stephen's is pretty good --sold in some Pathmark's - and Stewarts makes very good ginger beer.
