Recs in the San Fernando valley

Thank for the recs so far guys. Before responses started coming in on this post, i tried two places and was underwhelmed by one and surprised (in a bad way) by the other.

I went to Mariscos Los Arcos for a Mexican seafood dinner the other night and found it rather underwhelming. The people who own/run it were very nice and friendly but the quality of the food was pretty poor. I am used to Coni's Seafood and although I wasnt expecting that level of food, it was still pretty bad. I have heard that Mariscos Vallarta is good and will try that next.

I also tried Firehouse last night. It reminded me why i dont trust opinions on yelp. This place has a 4 1/2 star rating and people rave about how good the Greek food is there. Being Greek myself, i dont usually have high hopes for great Greek food but this place was just plain awful. The only thing Greek in the whole place was the music that was playing through their speakers. Food was frozen and then thrown into a microwave...had little flavor and was just very poor quality. We had the lamb kleftiko which was tough and still cold in places, the fried calamari which came right out of a box in the freezer and into the fryer (the type of calamari rings that McDonalds might have if they had calamari), the hoummous and tzatziki dips, which were barely edible. The only thing that was decent was the spanakopita.

Keep the suggestions coming and i will be trying them and writing my thoughts.

Thanks again for all the input.

Recs in the San Fernando valley

Just moved to Encino and don't know any places to eat in the valley. Looking for anything from hole-in-the-walls to fancy restaurants. I literally only care about the quality of the food. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Catch & Release - anyone been?

Unfortunately its nothing special. I would go to SMYC in Santa Monica a hundred times over before going back to Catch and Release.

Catch and Release - Marina del Rey

I was not very impressed with this place either. The live bay scallop appetizer is pretty good but everything else was terrible. Try SMYC on Santa Monica and 6th. I thought that place was very good.

What restaurant do you really really really miss that is now closed?

Dragon Regency in Monterrey Park (on Atlantic and Garvey). Went there for many years and was super disappointed when they closed down and were replaced by a lamb hot pot restaurant.

Westwood -- Boiling Crab

Food is good as it is at all their locations. Service is a bit rough though at the westwood location. It feels like its being run by a bunch of kids with no adult supervision. All their restaurants have young servers but at the westwood location, it just feels like there are no adults in charge and the service suffers. Our food came out before the fries. We asked for our fries and by the time they came out, we were done eating the food. refills on drinks were extremely slow and just getting the attention of a server was difficult. Having said that, i like their food and will go back...i just hope the service gets better.

Planning an eating trip, need some input (Japanese, Korean, fine dining, Taiwanese, regional Chinese, Vietnamese, coffee, raw oysters etc)

I wouldn't really categorize Animal or Son of a Gun as "fine dining". Both are good, but are pretty casual places.

Qin West Chinese Cuisine Westwood (A Photo Story and Review)

The twice cooked pork is very good. Slices of pork belly in a smoky, sweet sauce, with lots of peppers. Delicious.

Great Italian Deli in DC/Baltimore Area

Hugely helpful guys. Thank you very much.

Great Italian Deli in DC/Baltimore Area

They are in the 20009 area code. Thanks

Great Italian Deli in DC/Baltimore Area

I have some friends that just moved to the area and are looking for a great Italian deli where they can get good Italian cheeses and meats. Are there any standout places that you can recommend? Thanks.

New Banh Mi Shop in Venice, Southwest Corner of Rose and Lincoln

Picked up sandwiches from there on saturday. Had the Oink Mi and the Cur Ri. Both were very tasty but they are quite expensive considering their size ($13 and $9). Also tried their crispy rolls that were not very good. They are made with chicken and shrimp and the filling seems pretty dry.

They also sell a few things (like Red Boat Fish Sauce...which is amazing).

I will definitely go back for the sandwiches (since its much easier than trecking east) even though the prices are fairly steep (relative to most other banh mi shops).

Bit o Scotland fish and chips

Mac's on State Street in SB is very good. They also do some traditional English meat pies. Worth visiting when you are up there.

Pacific Fish is open on saturdays, as is LA Fish Co. LA Fish is also open on sundays but Pacific Fish is not.

Best Seafood West Hollywood to Santa Monica

If you really wanted to do Providence, i would call over there and speak with Donato. Tell him you are only in town for 4 days and that you really have been wanting to go there. they are generally pretty cool about working with you to help you out and will probably find a time for you. Just a thought.

Greek American Grub

Tony's Taverna in Malibu has the best Greek food in LA in my humble (Greek) opinion. Its not great, but its the best around and has a cool atmosphere (live music thursday through sunday) .

Palm Springs - can't miss places

We are heading to PS for a week and wondering if there are any "can't miss" places to eat or shop ( for food) out there.

Restaurants can be anything from tiny hole In the wall to fancy places. We just want great food. Ethnic foods are a plus but anything good is of interest.

Also are there any good seafood or meat markets in the desert??

Thanks

Hey westsidegal. Yeah we are trying to get it all under $50. Not many alcohol drinkers though. I think most people will just be drinking soft drinks.

Need restaurant for up to 40 people (lunch) at under $50/person

We are having my daughters baptism and looking for a place that could do lunch for up to 40 people. If we could keep it under $50/ person that would be great. Preferably MDR/SM/Venice area. Good food is important ( not necessarily super fancy) and a view or nice atmosphere is a plus.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Oxtail Pho at Phorage

Just got back from lunch at Phorage. I also had the oxtail pho but was a bit disappointed. Although the oxtail was nice, i thought the broth definitely lacked flavor. It needed more star anise and Cinnamon for sure. Without a tasty broth, you really cant have good pho.

We also had their imperial rolls that were pretty good but all in all, if i need to scratch my pho itch on the westside, i think Nong La does a much better job than phorage. Not sure i will be going back.

Live sea scallops?! Where do I buy them?!

Pacific Fish downtown has them almost all the time. They are about $6 or $7 per lb...and they are about 1lb each (but sooooo good)
