Where to eat with kids near Cunningham Park, Qns?

We went to Patsy's and the service was horrendous. The server spilled oil/liquid from a plate of broccoli rabe into my lap while serving me, and I barely got an apology. Either the waitress forgot to order my son's food or the kitchen forgot to make it, because it didn't come--we had to flag someone down and ask for it, and then waited 10-15 minutes for it to show up. In which time my husband's meal and mine both turned cold. And when the bill came, they'd taken off a whopping three dollars. Meanwhile we'd been charged for a drink the bartender gave my son for free while we waited for our table, and a surcharge was added for that broccoli rabe--which the waitress had said came with my meal--so the bill was HIGHER than it should've been even without any trouble.

The table next to us wasn't doing any better--the server brought them the wrong pizza, and when they pointed it out the waitress said, "Sorry, I know it was supposed to be xx, but the guys are really busy." And then they were charged for the pizza they ordered, which cost more than the plain one they received.

Both of our waitresses wanted to fix the bills, but couldn't without the manager's code number to punch in. And the manager was nowhere to be found. We waited another ten minutes before he finally showed up, full of excuses and apologies.

He did make good on our bill--he comped it completely, which impressed me--but if we lived nearby we'd give them another few months at least to get the hang of things. Once they settle in maybe they'll be fine, but for now it was almost as much of a circus as the one we'd seen intentionally.

We're taking junior to see the Big Apple Circus this weekend & would love to combine the event with some good food. Any suggestions? Probably needs to be in the pizza/deli/hot dogs/noodles, etc, vein--my husband and I are adventurous but the kid drives us crazy.

I'm going up soon (w/husband & 4-year-old) and would love to know all your favorite places to eat/get ice cream/find regional specialties...

If they're inexpensive & kid-friendly, so much the better. Thanks!

Freezing eggplant parmesan?

I should've known Martha would have the answer. Thanks!

Freezing eggplant parmesan?

I wondered about wax paper, but I assumed the wax would melt. And I've been having the same thoughts as you about commercially prepared stuff, but everything I see written about this stuff says never to store acidic foods w/aluminum.

The Glad trays might work. The kicker is, this is for a cookbook and I'd rather not force readers to buy something specifically for this recipe, kwim? Hoping to find a workaround.

Freezing eggplant parmesan?

Ah, no, sorry I wasn't clear. I'm lining the pan w/foil, then baking, then freezing. I did a tray that way earlier & transferred it to parchment, thinking that might work, but it's too wet. Seeping through. Bah.

But I can't bake it with plastic wrap. This is why I'm stumped.

Freezing eggplant parmesan?

Hi all. I'm working on some big-batch recipes, and for casseroles I've been lining the tray with aluminum foil to make freezing & cleanup easier--you stick the whole dish in the freezer and once it's solid, take it out of the baking dish & wrap tightly. But I'm stumped about how to do this with eggplant parm. Won't the tomato sauce eat through the foil? What else could I use?

Please help me troubleshoot these Chocolate Chip Cookies

That would definitely do it ;) Better luck next time! And the refrigerating thing is big too--when I wrote that post the NYT article hadn't been published yet. I do find that the cookies are better if I refrigerate overnight. The hard part is not eating all the dough in the meanwhile.

Thanks, guys! Kattyeyes, I've been on chow for a looooong time, but mostly I use it for research. Don't post often enough, even though I'm here at least a couple times a month.

And yes, I did see that earlier thread. Just didn't seem appropriate to jump in there, kwim?

Please help me troubleshoot these Chocolate Chip Cookies

Hi all. That's my recipe you're all discussing, and I must admit I'm a little stymied! I've only had a handful of people write to me about problems over the years, but crumbliness/toughness has never come up before. There is indeed quite a lot of sugar in these cookies--that's what helps achieve the crispy/chewy/toffee effect--but I'd be surprised if that's the culprit. I'm inclined to think it's too much flour, as others have said--I always "fluff" my flour before measuring (by stirring it around a bit), then scoop spoonfuls into the cup, and sweep the back of a knife across the top.

Housewolf, what's your technique?

Date night in South Jersey--where to go?

We're headed down to my in-laws' in Franklinville tomorrow (from Brooklyn), and my mother-in-law has volunteered to babysit. Where should we go? When we're driving around, it seems like everything around there is a Macaroni Grill or some other chain. We're looking for something nice but not necessarily fancy, Italian or American or just about any ethnicity as long as it's good. Suggest away!

Cake in a half-sheet pan: leave it in the pan, or take it out?

Thanks, everyone. I did get it out, and all's well. (And I hadn't used parchment, just cooking spray.)

Cake in a half-sheet pan: leave it in the pan, or take it out?

For my son's birthday party tomorrow, I just baked a cake in a half-sheet pan, which I've never done before. I was planning to take it out of the pan to cool and frost, but now that I'm about to do it the logistics seem a bit nutty. My cooling racks are too narrow for the pan, so I'd have to use two of them, which makes the flipping out of the pan part quite perilous.

When you bake a half-sheet cake, do you frost it in the pan or out? If out, how on earth do you get it out without the cake breaking? Thanks.

Certified refrigerated pie crust?

You're probably right, but I'm teaching a cooking class for harried moms! No time to make dough from scratch--it's all about time-saving techniques. One of my students is kosher, hence the search.

Puff pastry could work, I guess. I'm also thinking pizza dough. Trader Joe's is certified, I believe.

Certified refrigerated pie crust?

Thanks for the speedy response, but those all look pre-crimped. I'm looking for crusts that aren't already shaped, so we won't have to unshape them for other uses--I find that they break up too much when you tinker.

Certified refrigerated pie crust?

Does such a thing exist? My mom always bought the frozen pie crusts that were already formed & in a tin, but I'd like to experiment with some turnover-type recipes and would rather not have to take them apart. Many thanks.

Dinner tomorrow near Newark Airport?

My toddler & I are picking up my husband at EWR just before dinnertime tomorrow--which happens to be Easter. We're not celebrating (in fact, I'm trying to observe Passover restrictions) but I'd like to find a decent, not too expensive place for us to eat nearby. I checked on the board and saw a lot of recs for Spirito's in Elizabeth, but they're not open tomw. Any other ideas?

Great Pesach Desserts?

I am in NYC, and there's a whole thread devoted to the lack of KP margarine (sticks, for baking) on Chow! Though thanks to that thread, it looks like my dad's going to score some in Brooklyn tomorrow. I hope.

This looks wonderful--my husband's 40th birthday is the night of the 1st seder & I'm dying since I can't find any KP margarine. But what's Butter Extract? Does that make this dairy?

Where to buy black cocoa powder?

I'm making some homemade oreos for a holiday party next weekend and I'd love to use the really, really, REALLY dark cocoa powder King Arthur sells online. Problem is I'm all out and I'm not sure it would get here in time if I order more. Soooo, anyone know of a bricks-and-mortar source in the 5 boros? I've checked the place on 22nd St and The Sugar Room in Sunnyside, no luck. Thanks.
