Pre-Pageant dinner -- Laguna Beach -- dietary restrictions

I'm a fan of the Nirvana Grill located in Mission Viejo. Same owners, same exec. chef. Enough variety in the menu to probably please everyone. I agree w/empfam, a call to inquire about dairy/gluten-lite options may be wise. Too bad, to. You'll probably have to skip the goat cheese vanilla ice cream w/pineapple. My fave dessert of theirs. Attentive service and a cozy 'special night out' ambiance.

Santa Monica/Laguna Beach

The Laguna Niguel Sunday farmer's market doesn't have much in the way of prepared food to grab. It's a good idea to plan lunch elsewhere. It's in the parking lot of a Sprouts Market and, if you're not familiar with them, you may want to wander in to check it out. Lots of bulk nuts/grains, etc. and good prices on fruits/veggies. Think mini-Whole Foods. Sort of. Kind of. Enjoy your time in South County - we'll plan some good weather for you.

Guess I'm not the only OC resident with the Lizano habit! Thanks, Servorg. I should have done a little searching before asking.

ISO Salsa Lizano in OC

A friend brought back some Lizano from Costa Rica at New Years and I've finally used the last of it! Internet prices look a little steep - especially w/shipping added on. Anyone know if it's available somewhere in OC, preferably South County? Gotta have it for rice and beans, and just about anything else. HELP!

Orange County Cheap Eats Food Tour--need suggestions and advice...

Chili Chutney has a sign on the door that they've moved to a bigger location. Somewhere nearby on Lake Forest, I think it said. Call for the address before you go. Highly recommended - been there once and keep meaning to go back for more...

Summer 30th B'day Dinner - Westside-ish

Thanks for the recommendations laliz, wienermobile and Thor123. I've passed them along to my friend for her consideration. I'll let the 'hounds know what she decides and how it goes. Any more ideas out there are still welcome.

Summer 30th B'day Dinner - Westside-ish

I live in Orange County and am helping a friend find a location for her 30th birthday celebration. She wants to be a little more central to many of her friends and is looking for some Los Angeles options meeting as many of these criteria as possible.

Location - Westside between LAX and the Sepulveda Pass, Malibu included
Size - 20-30 adults
Cost - $35-$45/person (food only)
Date - a Saturday late afternoon, evening in July/August

Any cuisine is acceptable as long as Vegetarian options are available. She wants someplace with a separate room, or an area they can all be together.

Looking for some ideas I can pass on to her to help w/her planning. Thanks in advance for any recommendations you can offer.

Forbes Magazine "Best chains 2011"

5' 6", 127 lbs. post-menopausal, moderate exercise level, slow metabolism. So, yes - 1200-1400 calories a day to maintain where I am. Would that I could eat the way I used to. <sigh>

+1 for 41 Olive. Wandered in there during the holiday season and was pleasantly surprised with the variety, customer service and ambiance.

ISO Duck Legs or Game Meats in OC

Though I don't think either store stock game routinely, you might try special ordering through El Toro Meats on El Toro (in the big red barn-like building) or the Meat House at Alicia/Geronimo. Both are in Mission Viejo. My meat market of choice is El Toro Meat w/the best Carne Asada (not that you asked). Meat House strives for a more gourmet grocery vibe, and their prices show it. I trust some of our fellow 'Hounds will be able to offer more specific advice.

Forbes Magazine "Best chains 2011"

If anyone wants to confirm that America has an obesity problem, just look at this list. Though not familiar with all the chains mentioned, the ones I am familiar with offer gut-busting portion sizes with outrageous calorie, sodium and fat levels. Just looked at Ruby Tuesday's fit and trim menu on line - a couple of reasonable choices, but some have upwards of 700 calories. Heck of a lot if one's trying to stick to 1200 calories a day.

Living in California, I'm used to being able to see the nutritional values of most chains I'd consider going to. I was amazed when it wasn't available when traveling out of state last summer. Should restaurants routinely provide nutritional information? Or, 'portions per order' information?

Lee's Sandwiches - yum...

Anyone else a fan of Lee's Sandwiches in the Southwest? My favorite - the #5 pork sandwich. Being Vietnamese in origin, the flavor profile is so different from typical sandwich places. I consider it a different lunch time option and not a competitor to Subway or other chains. Prices can't be beat. I work near a major university and the students flock here at all hours.

I stood in line with a woman the other day who had no idea was to order, so she ordered the same as me. Then asked if the pork had teriyaki. I told her no, answered a few other questions for her and walked away thinking she was probably going to be disappointed. The flavor profile is so different - with cilantro and jalapeno providing the heat.

My only request would be for a whole grain option. The freshly baked-on-site crusty french bread roll is mighty tasty, but I'm trying to eat healthier these days and a different bread option would be appreciated.

Gift Certificate recs for Steak in the Trabuco Canyon/Lake Forest(?) Area?

Trabuco Oaks is a nice recommendation. IIRC, casual dining and the steaks are pretty good.

My go-to place for special dinners in the neighborhood is Nirvana Grille - http://www.nirvanagrille.com. Not a steak place, but a few beef dishes on the menu. Not much to look at from the outside since it sits on the corner of a small strip mall, but tasteful and cozy on the inside. In addition to the Mission Viejo location, there's also a Laguna Beach site which I've never visited. Your friends could try either one...

Suggestions for sushi in Orange County??

My favorite little neighborhood place is Zen Sushi near La Paz and Pacific Park (or Oso, which changes name right there.) The anchor stores are a Stater Bros. and Target, so you'll know you're in the right place.

Not snooty at all, and good selection for sushi neophytes. Most of the clientele are regulars, so it's definitely got something going right. Limited indoor seating with a covered patio that I think is heated, though can't promise.

Disappointed in the SeaVenture Restaurant in Pismo

Thanks for all the tips. Sad to know it wasn't just an off night but I'll take it off my list. I've also heard El Mirador a few doors down from Splashes has pretty good Mexican which I may have to try my next time up....

I remember Avila before Unocal had to rebuild it and it sounds like the ambiance has changed significantly. I'll have to check it out as well.

Disappointed in the SeaVenture Restaurant in Pismo

In the past, I've considered the restaurant in the SeaVenture Hotel in Pismo to be a hidden gem. But, I stopped by for dinner while traveling down the coast last week and found it.... lacking. I wasn't very hungry so opted for a couple of items off the 'small plates' side of the menu. Only available in the bar or the patio. I opted for the patio and enjoyed a nice sunset. Also had a tasty 'martini' of some sort with lemon/citrus vodka and champagne. Tasty, but why is every vodka-based drink these days called a martini?

My real disappointment was with the food. I had steamed mussels which were small and fairly bland. The broth was thin and tasteless. I also had the seared ahi which was refrigerator cold. As if they sear off a bunch ahead of time, and serve it straight out of the chiller. How much longer, or how much more effort would it be to cook to order? Flavor was good, but the temperature was a surprise.

I've had meals there before and been very satisfied. Was it an off night? Did I order the wrong things? Has quality declined over the last couple of years?

Where should I have gone for dinner w/in walking distance of the Pismo pier?

OC and Ventura County Fair FOOD

Fair food is always a little overwhelming. Especially if you're trying to avoid consuming a week's worth of calories and sodium. Got a super pass for OC this year by signing up for both starting and closing weekend 5K races. So, I've been a couple of times, and one more planned. For the first day I went Greek. Not vegetarian, but they have veggie options. The gyro was pretty good. The other time I threw caution to the wind and had a BBQ beef sandwich (mediocre) and the fresh made potato chips. The chips were a major disappointment. Many of the slices were stuck together and therefore greasy and nearly raw. Picked at about 1/2 the order, trashed the rest. Topped off the day with a mini-cupcake, red velvet. Only about 3 bites, so not too guilt inducing. Unfortunately I thought the frosting was overly sweet and the cake rather bland. The only 'repeat performance' I'd consider would be a return to the Greek stand.

Best Happy Hour in Orange County

Last time I did apps at Alcatraz, they were all mass produced breaded deep fried. Food for the masses with nothing fresh or freshly made.

Try the tapas at Cafe Tu Tu Tango also at The Block. Better variety, though don't know if they have happy hour prices.

Restaurants near I605 in Los Alamitos?

Although not particularly freeway close, You might consider Walt's Wharf in Seal Beach just a couple of blocks up from the pier. Mostly fish, great grilled artichoke appetizer, and the ambiance of the area for a post-dinner walk can't be beat.

Food near or in Angel Stadium?

You're probably thinking of Papa Hassan's on Glassel, up from the circle on the edge of the Chapman U. campus. Haven't been in years, but remember it as tasty and affordable, even for a struggling grad student.

Where are the Best Donuts in Orange County?

Holy mackerel, this original post is old! Here's a corollary question. Food Network has shown specialty donut shops who do maple/bacon donuts with real chunks of bacon on top. Anyone know if anyplace in OC makes these? I'm in South County but would be willing to travel for these!

Newport Beach and South Stop Recs.

The LN market is Sunday from 10 - 2 or so. Relatively small, but good variety for fruits/veggies. Mostly supported by the locals, it lack the festiveness of Irvine - which may be a good thing, depending on your outlook. There's one bakery stall with vegan bread that's pretty good. I never miss the "Gourmet Tamales" w/ 20 kinds of tamales from meat to vegan. I usually grab a 3 pack for lunches - yum. My favorites are the Chile Relleno and the Pork w/Green Chiles. As long as you've got a cooler, they'd travel fine. Located at La Paz and Pacific Place, it's easy to reach from the 73 toll road or the I-5.

In need of OC Restaurant gift card suggestions

Although the website doesn't specifically say gift cards are available, I've always found Nirvana Grill in Mission Viejo to be very accommodating. Very good food, nice service - great for a date night. (I've found the goat cheese maple ice cream to be addictive!)
