Sprinkles cupcakes

I'm one of the few who like Sprinkles (BH), but Susie Cakes are just like the cupcakes you had when you were a kid. Frosting is sweet but not super dense, more fluffy. The only thing Sprinkles has over Susie Cakes is that it's on my way home so it's more convenient, but I do make Susie runs if I'm in the Brentwood/Santa Monica area (which isn't often, but now that I think about it, maybe that's a good thing)

BEST DONUTS, BETWEEN WEST HO AND WEST LA?

I also vote for Stan's, although Fritelli's in Beverly Hills has maple bars that are to die for.

Where to find white truffles in a market?

You may want to give Bristol Farms a ring too, although I'm sure the prices will be heart-stopping as well. My dad inquired at his local BF down in OC and amazingly enough, they did have them in stock. I know that you can find them at Dean & Deluca online as well, although again, they won't be cheap. Best of luck with your truffle hunting!

Restaurants you will defend no matter what anybody says...

I've always enjoyed Masa, we used to get deliveries a lot from them. Tom, the delivery guy, always made a huge fuss over our dog. He used to tell us that he looked forward to delivering to our house, because he go to see Lily, who goes absolutely nuts when she sees him (and it's not just because he's bringing food!) He would even bring her biscuits.

I was just thinking about El Cholo this morning, specifically the crab enchilada and the Chicken and Blue Tortilla enchiladas. Don't know if I'd still enjoy their margaritas (I've become a little bit of a tequila snob since my last trip to EC), but they were pretty damn strong, at least the bartenders have always done right by me.

Tuesday Dinner Deal Eastside?

Restaurant 15 in Echo Park has a special 3-course deal, $19 @ 15 (used to be $15 @ 15...damn crappy economy). It's available every day from 5pm to 6:30pm, if you don't mind eating a little on the early side. Unfortunately I haven't been their even though it's in my hood, but I've seen some fairly good reviews (burger is supposed to be especially tasty).

Best ice cream in Los Angeles- an updated poll

I got some Fosselman's cherry vanilla for my SO...he's hooked. Stuff's more addictive than crack. Thank God they're located all the way in Alhambra.

Best Margarita in Los Angeles?

I've yet to find a margarita in the Greater Los Angeles as delicious (or as potent) as the ones I used to get at the now-defunct C Bar at One&Only Palmilla. I never thought of margaritas as "refreshing" until I had one of those. However, while I have a fairly decent tolerance despite being an infrequent imbiber, I had trouble walking after my 2nd margarita. They certainly weren't cheap: $14 a piece, with tax and gratuity it's $20 a pop...maybe that contributed to my lack of coordination.

IMO, part of what makes a margarita is the quality of the tequila. I'm a big Gran Centennario fan, but I haven't been able to find it in a lot of places, so I usually have to buy it at the duty-free in the SJD airport. Herradura is a good 2nd option; Don Julio is good also but a little on the cost-prohibitive side. Jose Cuervo? Why don't you just stick a spoon in the back of my mouth so I can vomit now instead of later?

I will say that my boss makes FANTASTIC margaritas, so once a month or so if we have a birthday in the office or potluck, he'll bring in his battery powered blender and we all get buzzed at lunch. Only problem with that is that I don't want to go back to work afterwards.

Super awesome Italian American food?

Maria's has awesome pizza, but the rest of the menu is not all that. Good chopped salad though. Actually, their pizza maybe my all-time favorite.

Review + Pics: Fix Coffee in Echo Park

The boy and I went there Saturday afternoon on our twice-monthly "get out of the house so the cleaning lady can do her thing" walk. A little on the pricey side, has a very "hip" vibe, but unlike so many "hip" coffee places, the staff was very friendly...and the best part: the gentleman who I think was the manager/owner got a big bowl of water for our very thristy dog! Anybody who's good with Puppy is good with me. Very good peach gelato too!

Thanks for the info Suebee...I wasn't sure if it had opened yet but the BF and I will definitely check it out on our neighborhood walk on Saturday. Gelato....ummmm!

Beware of truffles at Craft!

Still not an expert on truffles, but saw some interesting information about them (it's wikipedia, so take it with a grain of salt). First off, the white truffle (tuber magnatum) is found primarily in the Piedmont region, but can also be found in one small area of Croatia as well. There are also "whitish" truffles (tuber borchi) and these truffles are in fact found in Tuscany and Romagna. However, they are not as aromatic as their Piedmontese cousins. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to read more about the whitish truffles to see what the season is, or to see if these were in fact the "summer" white truffles. But in light of what the chef told nosh, it would make sense, although I wish I knew if their seasonality was the same or similar to the winter white truffle.

I think I now know more about gourmet fungus than I ever thought I would (or would care to). Curiosity is my worst enemy.

BBQ King Downtown Bulldozed

While I wasn't a big fan of the BBQ beef, I loved their BBQ chicken. Yes, service was slow, especially if you didn't call in your order ahead although ironically their delivery was quick and the guy was really friendly, and even threw in some free goodies. The BF was in love with the 1lb. King burger, so when they closed up shop on Figueroa and Sunset/Cesar Chavez that was a sad day for him. Can't comment on the other items because the BF and I are the types that when we find something we like, we tend to order it over and over and over (I know, boring), but we do miss BBQ King.

L.A. TACO TRUCK ORDINANCE OVERTURNED!!!

Got my email notification from saveourtacotrucks.org....good news, but this fight could go the distance in court. But for the moment, my favorite taco truck on Logan (south of Sunset) is safe.

Beware of truffles at Craft!

White truffles from TUSCANY? I am by no means a white truffle expert but true Alba white truffles would be from Piedmont, not Tuscany. I wonder if it's the same species. Tuscany is not that far from Piedmont, so it may be possible, but I'm a little skeptical, given the time of the year. Oh well, stranger things have happened, especially when Mother Nature is involved.

Awesome detective work Nosh. Very cool of the chef to follow up personally.

Catering or Banquet in Beverly Hills

Sandbags is no more...Pizza Rustica (?) went into that spot. Too bad, I enjoyed Sandbags every once in a while.

Formal Restaurant

To my knowledge, the Hotel Bel-Air is the only restaurant that requires a jacket...but even then, when I looked in Zagat to confirm, all it said was "jacket suggested". Zagat used to have a section in their guide that listed all the LA restaurants that had a dress code, but it doesn't look like they have that feature anymore. At least they don't for LA.

Last Minute Wedding Cake Planning

A lot of 'hounders are partial to Phoenix Bakery in Chinatown. I can't personally vouch for them as I've never been myself, but it might fit the bill for what you need.

4 nights in san jose del cabo

Woofer, you are correct: C will be closing at the end of August, and the new fine dining restaurant at One&Only Palmilla will be a new Jean*Georges restaurant. But don't count out Agua...Agua gets the short stick many times, but the food is absolutely amazing.

Los Cabos Challenge...

If you're open to places that may not have the best views, you may want to check out El Azahar (San Jose del Cabo), or Damiana. Both are very good, not cheap but not all that unreasonable. Sushi and Art in Cabo is pretty reasonable, and it's right by all the bars and nightclubs in the Marina (including Senor Sweets...yummy gelato!) If the view is really what you're looking for Sunset Monna Lisa is the place. I've heard mixed things about the food although lately more positive than negative. If nothing else, it's a great place to have a cocktail.

Crumbs Cupcakes (Larchmont)

I've never had anything from the Larchmont store, but our office has ordered fromt he BevHills location many times. However, I'm also the lone individual who is most definitely NOT a fan. The cupcakes are huge, but the frosting is too thick and WAY too sweet. And this is coming from somebody who LOVES frosting! I'd much rather have Sprinkles, although I know there are folks who would disagree with me, but that's cool, because usually the person will say "try so-and-so instead." Recommendations are always cool!

I will say though that the few times I've been to the BH Crumbs that the staff was friendly and efficient.

Fisherman's Outlet Seafood Downtown

Has anyone been there, and if so, what are your thoughts? I used to hit up Santa Monica Seafood but now that I no longer work in SM (and live in Echo Park), I'm still in search of a good seafood market/restaurant. Thanks!

staying at wilshire grand

There's also Engine Co. 28, and Zucca is a little further down on Figueroa as well. That's one thing you have to give Downtown LA, there's a pretty good selection of restaurants and they run the gamut from dirt cheap to have-to-hock-a-kidney expensive.

Arroz con pollo

Versailles has never let me down when it comes to arroz con pollo. It's bone-in (at least the last time I had it was). I think the closest location to Downtown is the La Cienega/Olympic location, but with no traffic (like that ever happens in LA) you could be there in 20 min.

ISO wedding venue with fabulous food!

You may want to look at the Music Center. My friend had her reception there about 3 years ago and I believe they work with Patina for catering. Food was very good then, and they would be able to accommodate a reception of your size.

Favourite Cheeseburger in LA

Unfortunately BBQ King is no longer at Sunset and Figueroa, it's now located down by USC. Too bad, because it used to be just down the street from home and my BF was truly in love with the King burger.
