Dutch oven vs. Slow cooker

If it has mushrooms on it or small gold, brownish flowers, it's an older one. :)

vegetarians on texas road trip...

Just Juice, 428 West Greens Road Houston TX, except that they serve other stuff besides juice. In Houston there's also Asian vegetarian like Quan Yin. And of course, A Loving Hut.

Any Clever Offbeat Advice for My Kitchen Redesign?

I love my laminate countertops by Wilson art. Easy to clean, no scratches or stains. I've had them for 6 years now. They have a linen look to them, but I think it has been discontinued.

good eats ideas for La Porte, Seabrook area

I haven't eaten here but I've heard good things about it. A bit more upscale than most places in LaPorte -Main 101. It has a real chef, that cooks from scratch.

El Tiempo - is there a preferred location ?

I have to agree with Lambowner. Twice I've eaten at El Tiempo with a group and we ended up getting food elsewhere because we ordered food, everyone took one bite of the food and then deciding it was unedible. The third time I ate my food (birthday dinner for someone, I didn't select the place) it wasn't that great and I felt even worse afterwards. I think people like it because they drink margaritas and don't notice the quality? Maybe I just was there on off days? In any case, I won't go back.

I wouldn't recommend Hazards. It's really a bar, not a restaurant and a depressing one at that.

Organic Grass Fed Beef?

I heard Lorenzo's has grass fed beef and Ziggy's Healthy Grill does too. That's what I heard, don't know if it's true.

Georgia's, Farm to Market, when they have the buffett, has grass fed beef on it from time to time.

Best countertop surfaces

I know I'm replying to a very old thread. What I read about manufacturer's website about natural linoleum, the color goes all the way through the product which is why scratches and gouges can be buffed out. if the color faded, then it was probably vinyl. At least, that's my understanding.

Suggestions for celebration dinner in Tokyo

Thanks!

Take-away sounds great. Too bad I'm not staying someplace nicer that night, but it's just a simple business hotel. Maybe I'll do a great meal when I get there and the day after go to a ryokan and have dinner there.

I think I'll carb-reload with a steaming bowl of ramen post marathon night. Yum.

Suggestions for celebration dinner in Tokyo

I plan on running the Tokyo marathon in Feb and would like to have a nice celebratory meal that evening. It's a Sunday. My budget tops out at $300 for two people. I'm open to most kind of food except for French. (yes, I like French but don't want it for this particular meal). It would be nice it's something uniquely Japanese, like the food, the presentation or the decor...etc.

Or am I kidding myself and I'll be too tired to even enjoy it? Maybe I should grab a bowl of ramen somewhere and have a beer instead?

Any thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks!!

Coming to Houston to Celebrate Anniversary - Please Help!

I know this is a bit late for a response.

Latin Bites is a nice place. Good food, small cozy atmosphere, BYOB. You need reservations though since there's like 6 tables or so.

I almost.....averted disasters

Hahahah!! this made me laugh so hard.

I don't know if this counts, but as a kid I remember seeing this bowl on the kitchen counter that looked like it was melted chocolate. I was about one minute from digging in when my sister grabbed it and started eating. Haha... turned out it was canned catfood mixed with water.

I'm not sure what that says about me or about the canned cat food!! hahaha.

Trip to Houston, need recommendations

I like the Wings at Beavers and the BBQ is good too, but a lot more expensive than most places.

http://www.beavershouston.com/

Of course, i'm sure you are going, how do i know we have similiar tastes? You dont know and that 's the problem. But at the very least, if the weather is good, Beavers is nice to site outside.

Restaurants in downtown Houston?

Kim Son is good but I've noticed if you go when they are very busy, the quality isn't as good. Go during the off hours.

Houston/San Antonio Farewell Trip Eats/Sights

Barnaby's might be a good place. Again my neices like it. There's paintings of dogs and bones on the ceiling. Cute place. I believe there's three or four locations now, including a breakfast location (Baby Barnaby's). The food is good too. My only real complaint is it is very noisy inside the restaurant.

Houston/San Antonio Farewell Trip Eats/Sights

I'm going to suggest Jax Grill because my neices loves it and I don't have kids so have to go by what they say. Heh. It's not expensive and definitely not fancy. It gets swamped during lunch time though. It's between Shepherd's Drive and Durham right off of I-10. They have burgers (although I find them under-seasoned), big nice salads, steaks, great black bean soup, griled catfish, etc. I like Jax grill too. Eat there every Thursday. Don't go here for wine though.

Restaurants in downtown Houston?

I love Cava Bistro and Mia Bella on Main Street. The owners opened a new Tex-Mex place on Main but I haven't tried it yet.

I wasn't impressed with the food at the Grove. Tasted very fresh but kind of bland. There was 6 of us in the group and we each sampled each others entrees plus had appetizers. Cool place for a drink though.

If you want quick and inexpensive Tex-Mex and Cuban fare, try El Rey's on Main Street.

I don't think you are going to find too many touristy places since I don't think many tourists come to Houston.

What are the idiots at Luby's thinking?

At one point in time you could smoke in restaurants but no longer. I think it just shows that the decor hasn't changed since they first open. When I saw the ashtrays it threw me. Sort of like seeing ashtrays in the seats on an airplane! lol.

If there's four or more people, the bed and breakfast, as well as the local restaurant, will cooking classes. Unfortunately, it was just me and my husband and I think we were the only tourists in the town at the time.

I always think of BBQ as being inexpensive. Having saying that, I think Beaver's is over-priced, decent but overpriced.

But their nut burgers rocks!

What are the idiots at Luby's thinking?

There's still a few independant cafeterias left in Houston. Try the Dinnerbell on Lawndale (they even have ashtrays built into the wall while you wait in line!) and Cleburne's on Bissonnet, which is pricer than Luby's but you can split an entree with three people. Seriously.
