Can Whole Foods Atone with Wellness Clubs?

I went to one class when the opened. The dish they made, a pasta with a roasted pepper sauce was OK. But I was thinking this would be pretty good with some salt and a splash of olive oil. Ooops.

Café Meets Gallery at Monkey Forest Road

I wonder if they can sell enough coffee or art to stick around. I'll definitely try it and keep it in the rotation with boot and shoe if things are well prepared, but this is a tricky one. But I guess you only need to sell a few pieces per month to make it work.

Best Coffee Shop in Oakland/Berkeley?

2 more options:
Boot and Shoe Service is now serving coffee from 7-3 or 4 on days the restaurants open. It is Sightglass. Excellent pastries as well, and there is a small lunch menu?

Also try the new spot on Piedmont Ave, Local Cafe. They are serving Graffeo beans. Well prepared, but it is a darker roast.

I use Terra Firma farms as my CSA. They have a pretty wide radius, so it is worth a look.

Cana Cuban Parlor & Cafe, Oakland - any reports?

So far I have tried the meat empanadas, the plaintains, a few pastries and the coffee.

Coffee: Meh. The cafe con leche was too sweet for me (well to be expected). The espresso drinks are really bitter oddly.

Empanadas: Win, win! These are yummy.

Plantains: inconsistent. Half the time they are undercooked. (tostones and madura). Of the 4 times I have had them, they have only been cooked properly once. Not sure if I will give it another try.

Rice and beans: bland unfortunately. The rice was a little sticky.

I haven't tried the main plates yet. It seems they are about $1-2 too expensive. I'll need to go with a bigger group.

Pastries: very good.

So far, 3 stars out of 5. The empanadas will keep me coming back.

New job in downtown Oakland, looking for lunch places

I'd add True Burger, Hawker Fare, Farley's, Plum (and they have a truck!), Cafe Gabriela, and Specialty's (only the cookies are special, but they have convenient online ordering.)

Bica has a wide selection of beans from lots of roasters (De La Paz, ocassional Blue Bottle or Four Barrel)

Subrosa has Four Barrel Beans

Best Coffee Shop in Oakland/Berkeley?

Agreed, when I finally tried it I asked myself, all this hype was for the taste of char? Pass.

Best Coffee Shop in Oakland/Berkeley?

They have a cortado (akin to a gibraltar), but no special pastries. :) Not sure if more portuguese items are on the way. Nice coffee selection though. They pic lots of roasters and switch up the providers regularly.

Best Coffee Shop in Oakland/Berkeley?

I'd add Bica (on College in Rockridge, right near Trader Joe's and BART): great coffee, good place to sit, crappy wifi.
Farleys: very good coffee, lots of food choices, reliable wifi
Remedy Coffee: great coffee, relaible wifi, can be too full of hipsters but good

Best burgers in the Bay Area 2011

Haha, good question. They actually do not put a ton of bacon or avocado, it is a good compliment. But I'll admit, I remove the bacon and eat it on the side -- because I like bacon. I am pretty plain about burgers, so for me it rarely has more than onions. I only have avocado and onion on my burger there (no mayo, etc..), My sister eats hers only raw onions. The meat is very tasty, and the star of the burger!

Best burgers in the Bay Area 2011

Chop Bar wins for me. It passed Mua by a long shot (and Mua's burgers are excellent.)
Default include toppings: bacon and avocado
The bun is a yummy buttery kaiser style roll.
There are "cowboy onions" that are sauteed with smoked paprika. Definitely check it out. They are also open pretty late.

It is around lunch time. But not always. (Although I have always loved cold fried chicken!)

CHOW Tour Oakland, Your Thoughts On Where To Go?

I'd also add Chop Bar to the list. They've taken the burger crown away from Mua. Its on 4th and Alice. Seasonal, california-style food at good prices. Linden Street beers is on tap and the cocktails are good. I haven't tried anything I do not like yet. Fun casual atmosphere.

The Yucatan Chicken (excellent)
The Tri Tip/ Flat Iron Steak and Jo Joes (good to excellent)
Halibut (very good)
Desert: all have been great
Coffee: very good
Almonds: yummy

I have liked about 85% of the items I've tried. Whole hearted recommendation in my book.

Help! Birthday Gathering Ideas - Oakland

Have you tried Mua? Huge place, good food. It has a mix of small plates and entrees. The steak frites are some of the best I've ever head and good drinks. Hip atmosphere, and the have a good DJ. The DJ plays all evening, and the serve food till late. You'd also be able to take advantage of the uptown bar scene: Somar, Ozumo, Luka's, Plum and the new wine bar.

Help! Birthday Gathering Ideas - Oakland

Tamarindo is really small, so a group that size would be tricky. I had trouble with a group of 8 there isn't space to setup a bigger table than that for sure.

If you time it well, you could probably score the big table at Chop Bar near Jack London. Great food, easy parking and fun and easy going atmosphere. They serve Linden St Beer. Almost everything is under $20. (usually an entree will hit $21 for seafood.) The yucatan chicken is excellent and the burgers are as well. Honestly everything we've tried has been good - excellent. Deserts are great too. It is one of my new found favorites.

You could follow with Encuentro wine bar or Bocanova -- good drinks, food, hard to get seats though they seem to be booked a lot -- lots of bar seats. The patio is nice: blankets and heat lamps.

Best neighborhood for restaurants?

Agreed. There are lots and lots of good restaurants that are in the neighborhood. The Sunday Temescal Farmer's Market is easily one of the best in the Bay Area and you can do all of your shopping there. There is also a Trader Joe's on College. You can orient yourself around 51st and Broadway and have easy access to Rockridge and Piedmont Ave to add Mama Royals, Xyclo, Gregoire, Cesar Latino and Commis to your dining destination list. If you are a copy snob, there are 4 choices: Cole for drip coffee, Subrosa, Remedy and Bica for espresso and specialty coffees. For tea, L'Amyx is pretty good.

Berkeley/East Bay's best--please share!

Tamarindo in Downtown Oakland (near 12th st BART)
Xyclo: Rolls, Green bean salad, herb noodles are super yummy (on Piedmont Ave)
Soi 4: green papya salad and the Roti and mussels in red curry. Cool drinks too (Rockridge)
Bittersweet Cafe (Rockridge): the Spicy, the Bittersweet and the Chocolate Thai. Awesome.
Market Hall: Get the Thai Chicken Salad. Yummy!
Fentons: gor back in time for a taste of Americana. You'll feel like you need a poodle skirt
Ethiopian: Asmara, Cafe Colucci or the place on Piedmont Ave are all good
Witchcraft (in the Westfiled Center downtown SF): get the Roasted Pork Sandwich. That is pretty close to Carolina BBQ, a winner
Cafe M: great for brunch, yummy bacon, pancakes and hearty portions (4th St in Berkeley)
Oh second on Mua: Steak Frites. Wow. They are awesome, and more cool drinks
Mijita: yummy tacos. Traci Desjardin's spot (Ferry Building)
The taco place in Epicurisous Garden. Another place with homemade tortillas, tasty
Mint Leaf @ Epicurious Garden for the $5 Indian Tapas for late night dining
Thai Basil (in the Durant food court): pretty good Thai, open late
Dosa (only been to the Valencia one. Chennai chicken. Yum!
Udupi Palace on Valencia (better Dosa's than Dosa. But Dosa has way better sauces, and meat!)

Great NY Times Story on Scott’s Variety Store and Bar-B-Q

My granddad would send us a few pounds of bbq for christmas. (He lived in SC, we live in CA) They'll pack and mail it to you: dry ice and air mail. Sometimes my aunt continues the tradition. If i friend is making the trip, have them send you some.
