lunch halfway between LA & San Diego?

I live in LA, and a friend of mine is visiting San Diego, and we want to meet halfway between there and LA for some lunch - doesn't have to be fancy, just good! (On the beach would be nice - ie a fish taco shack - if its awesome)

On the map, halfway looks to be somewhere around Laguna Niguel, or San Clemente - any suggestions?

Thanks!

Dinner near the new Largo?

Ronin sounds interesting and might be just the ticket - thanks for all the suggestions!

This is indeed another "Flannagan Shenanagin" (!), but I much prefer it to the old "must endure the overpriced god-awful food in order to see the show" one!

Dinner near the new Largo?

So we are headed to the new Largo this weekend to catch Flight of the Conchords (woo!) and the new-but-still-arcane Largo rules say that you need to arrive to get your tickets and seat assignments at 7, then come back at 9 for the show.

So that leaves us with a nice 2 hour hole to get dinner somewhere near the theater (which is at the old Coronet theater on La Cienega just north of Beverly). Any good suggestions in this area - we're not interested in trendy/clubby/bridge-and-tunnel-y stuff. Good food is the most important thing... thoughts?

(Vito's, while good, is probably too far on the low end of the scale, and Nobu probably too far on the other end...)

Salad and white wine on a hot night?

OK chowhounders - send me someplace new. I have no air conditioning, and want to get out tonight with the DH for a nice salad and a glass of white for dinner. Don't want to break the bank - where should we go? We live in Hollywood, so something east side please... (I'm thinking something like the Alcove - i love their salads - but am a little burnt out on them...having been too often lately) Thanks!

Late Night eats in Culver City?

Going to the theater tonight at the Kirk Douglas theater in Culver City - the show gets out around 10pm - any suggestions of what to eat at that time of night - good food, relatively healthy, not too expensive? I like Tender Greens, but they close at 10, so we won't get there in time... Been wanting to try Ford's Filling Station, but consensus seems to be too much $ for too little satisfaction...

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Chinese Vegetarian - I'm confused - so many Happy Familys!

Its been quite a while since I've been to the Happy Family chinese vegetarian place in Monterey Park - I had heard they had moved, so i started poking around, and I am finding that there are quite a few Happy Family restaurants out there! Can some of you kind peeople help me figure out which is the one to go to?

Apparently there is some confusion because the original one (the one I was initially familiar with) had to move, so now I am seeing the "Happy Family 3" restaurant with addreses of both 111 N. Atlantic. and 608 N. Atlantic in Monterey Park, but there is ALSO a "Happy Family" restaurant on Colima Road in Rowland Heights, and seemingly, another one on Valley Road in Rosemead...

Can someone with more recent "Happy Family" experience guide me through this - are they all owened by the same people? Which ones are currently open, and most importantly, which is the best one!

Thanks!

SPECIAL EVENT RESTAURANT FOR VEGETARIAN BOYFRIEND?

Can anyone recommend a great (not necessarily fancy, but GREAT food!) place to take my vegetarian boyfriend for his birthday (he does eat eggs & dairy, thank god, or it would be too much for me to take!)?

I am not veggie, so it could be either an all-veggie place or a place with a significant amount of veggie choices that he doesn't end up in the "veggie ghetto" he so often does when i drag him around to my favorite holes-in-the-wall!

Japanese, Indian are special areas of interest (though we have been to Paru's too many times for it to be a special occasion place, and i was sad to see that tofu specialty place Umenohana in Bev. hills closed bfore i could try it, as that would have been perfect...) but all suggestions welcome. No adventurous outlying suburb too far!

Thoughts???
