What restaurant do you really really really miss that is now closed?

Chez Puce closed many years ago after a fire, but I still long for her simple mozzarella and butter crepes.

Also miss the skinless, boneless fried chicken with corn pudding at Gilliland's and wish Gerry would offer it at Finn McCool's.

And greatly miss Orleans for great Cajun on the westside.

What food do you long for but can't find/recreate?

Nabisco's marshmallow sandwiches. Two vanilla wafers and just the right amount of creamy chewy marshmallow in between.

Santa Monica Seafood: Hungry Cat or Blue Plate Oysterette?

I put my name on a list for Blue Plate a week ago and it shortened the wait by about half the time. Best to go between the lunch and dinner hours for quicker seating.

Moving To Santa Monica and searched a lot! Check my list?!

Since I love Bay Cities, too, and you can't eat goumet food every day, I'll mention some restaurants that I don't often see listed by other Chowhounds, but that I've found to be reliably good over the years:

Pizzicotto in Brentwood for great Italian at reasonable prices
Lula's on Main Street in SM for Mexican and great margaritas
The Galley on Main Street in SM esp. for half-priced burgers off their bar menu at happy hour
The Counter on Ocean Park Bl. the rest of the time for good burgers
Library Ale House on Main Street in SM for great beer on tap and nice back patio
Ocean Avenue Seafood in SM for everything
Jinky's on 2nd Street in SM for breakfasts and chili
Mr. Cecil's on Pico in WLA for ribs
All India Cafe in WLA for Indian (they deliver to SM)
Noma's in SM for sushi and other Japanese dishes
John O'Groats on Pico in WLA for the best breakfasts
The Hungry Pocket on Pico in SM for falafels
The Firehouse at Rose/Main in Venice for breakfast (I love their huevos rancheros)

And I'm sure Langer's in downtown LA would be the best place for tongue sandwiches, though I stick to their pastrami and corned beef.

Welcome to Santa Monica!

What's good (but not too fussy) East 50th in the 100s? Thanks!

Ess-A-Bagel at 50th & 3rd Avenue is close to the Kimberly and great for breakfast or lunch.

Moving to Santa Monica's Main Street

Tip for The Galley -- they have a daily happy hour and some of their bar menu selections are 50% off, a great way to have a burger or chicken sandwich, etc. On Main Street, I like Lula's for better than average Mexican food, and killer margaritas. Library Alehouse has great ahi tuna burgers, and Joe's on Abbot Kinney is great for everything. Welcome to the left coast's west side!

Italians pastries sought near Sherman Oaks

I would also say Nicolosi, but will add buying them from Veniero's Pastry Shop in NYC and having them sent unbaked. Baking is simple, just follow directions. Those are the best yet.

Santa Monica Breakfast Place

Lazy Daisy on Pico near 23rd has great eggs, pancakes and coffee -- roasted potatoes, not hash browns. Sit outside under the awning, open during the summer till 7:30 pm.

Paso Robles Wineries to avoid

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Zenaida Winery in Paso. It's one of our most favorites! Check it out.

You can order a traditional grain pie from Veniero's Pastry Shop in NYC - they deliver nationally,
Here's a very old recipe for a different dessert, Easter Tart (Pastiera di Pasqua), which serves 12:
1 1/2 cups pearl tapioca, 2 cups hot milk, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon grated lemon peel, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 1/4 pounds ricotta, 2 cups sugar,
6 egg yolks, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon grated lemon peel, 1/2 cup candied citron and candied orange peel, diced fine, 4 egg whites, beaten stiff but not dry,
1 recipe pasta frolla (see below), 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar.
Soak tapioca in water night before baking tart. After soaking overnight, boil in water 15 minutes and drain. Add hot milk, salt, sugar, cinnamon, and half the lemon peel, and simmer until milk has completely evaporated. Remove from heat and cool.
Place ricotta in bowl and stir until very smooth. Add sugar and egg yolks, one at a time, stirring well after each addition. Add cinnamon, candied citron and candied orange peel, the rest of the lemon peel, and last the cooked tapioca. Mix together and blend in egg whites.
Divide pasta frolla into 2 parts, one larger than other, and roll the larger piece to 1/2" thickness. Butter and flour a 10" cheese cake spring pan and line bottome and sides with rolled-out piece of pastry, trimming edges. Pour in ricotta filling. Roll out smaller piece of pasta frolla and cut into 1" strips. Place strips criss-cross over cheese filling, trimming edges neatly. Bake cake in moderate oven (375 degrees) for 45 minutes. Let cool in pan. when cool, push up bottom of spring pan, transfer tart to serving dish and sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.

Pasta frolla (pastry dough
)2 cups sifted pastry flour, 1 cup sugar, small pinch salt, 1/2 cup butter at room temp, 2 eggs, 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon rind
Sift together flour, sugar and salt. Make a well of dry ingredients on pastry board and place butter, eggs, lemon rind in well and work dough quickly. Do not add water. When smooth, shape into ball and chill 30 minutes.

Where can I get a good Chile Relleno?

I haven't been there in ages, but I remember liking the chili rellenos at La Cabana on Rose just west of Lincoln -- same owners as Casablanca listed above (or they used to be). For packaged ones, the Cooportunity on Broadway near 16th Street in Santa Monica sometimes has really good ones, made fresh by Renee's Kitchen...but they sell out and only come in once a week, so best to call first (you don't have to be a member to shop at this coop). These ones are anaheim chilis, and are light/fluffy egg batter, stuffed only with cheese.

Maine Lobster Meal for not too much $$?

The Irish pub is near 26th Street and Wilshire in Santa Monica and is now named Sonny McLean's -- used to be McGinty's. Don't know if they still have the lobster deal going on.

The Galley has a bar menu during happy hour where certain items are half-priced...making their burgers and grilled chicken breast sandwiches a real deal.
