Superlative food in Bergen County?
My favorite Greek restaurant in Bergen County: Vasili's Taverna in Teaneck. I grew up in Teaneck and, when I'm back in town, always go to Vasili's with my family. It's a cheery little place that serves really good food. (My parents are mildly obsessed with the Green chicken -- I'm not sure my mom has ever ordered anything else there.) Oh, definitely make a reservation if you're going to go for dinner -- I can't figure out the why or when but, some nights, it's just packed. BYOB. http://www.vasilistaverna.com/
Best Greek Restaurant in Queens
I've been to Philoxenia many times since it reopened and it's incredibly good.
Group of 12 - Early Dinner in Astoria or thereabouts
Philoxenia gets my vote -- I've seen several big groups there -- and the food is fantastic.
Best place for dinner with a large group in Jackson Heights?
Pio Pio is great for big groups. I had a dinner for about 20 or so people there a while back. They took very good care of us and the entire group, who had already fallen in love with the food, practically cheered over how little it cost.
Fine leaf tea source in Brooklyn/Queens area?
I second the Ten Ren recommendation -- they've got a great selection and shopping there is a very relaxing experience.
7 Line Restaurant Locator
Wow -- that is truly impressive. Thanks for posting it. Do you want updates (restaurant name changes, etc.) for the list? Just one I spotted -- Dosa Diner is now called Dosa Place.
Haloumi in Astoria?
The haloumi at Philoxenia has been a favorite starter for several meals I've had there.
Where can I get good Pho?
Thai Son in Jackson Heights has good pho (and lots of other tasty treats, too).
37th ave, JAckson Heights
I love Rajbhog Sweets & Snacks on 37th btwn. 72 and 73 - but it's not the sweets that do it for me there (well, they might but I haven't really tried them) -- it's the wonderful mix of different dishes they offer up every day on their very busy (so nothing sits around long) steam table and their chaats. So. Tasty.
Non-spicy food for foreign visitor (in JH)
It can be used as a dressing but it's also served with other stuff.
Non-spicy food for foreign visitor (in JH)
They usually serve it with the avocado salad and some of the other side dishes -- I just make sure they bring around plenty from the get-go. I definitely recommend trying it -- it's delicious.
Hmmm, come to think of it, I haven't been to Pio Pio in several months. I've got to remedy that very soon.
Is La Flor in Woodside still good?
I was there about a month ago and it was still really good. I had a butternut squash frittata -- it was an interesting (in a good way) sweet salty thing -- very tasty.
Non-spicy food for foreign visitor (in JH)
That's cause you like hot sauce -- I skip the hot sauce and ask for garlic sauce instead -- it's delicious.
Non-spicy food for foreign visitor (in JH)
How about Pio Pio or one of the other chicken places -- they all have plenty of non-spicy (yet incredibly tasty) options.
market watch: Jackson Heights
So far the new place is a hodgepodge of this and that -- mostly vitamins, some deodorant, energy bars, and lots baby formula. I hope they eventually add some food into the mix but, so far, not so good on that front.
Donovan's Pub, Woodside?
I like Donovan's a lot -- the burgers are good (but super messy) and their shepherd's pie is very tasty (and, as recommended/commanded by the waitress, slosh some steak sauce on it -- not A1, the other kind they have there -- it added a nice bit of tang to the dish). And their Guinness is fresh. What more could you need?
fingerling potatoes in jh or nearby queens?
Sometimes Trade Fair has them in the organic section -- really good ones, too. The Russian Banana fingerlings are delicious.
Best 5 restaurants in Jackson Heights?
Well, this list changes for me depending on my food mood but, at the moment, I'd say Rahjbog, Pio Pio, Taqueria Coatzingo, the takeout chaat shop on 74th (it's part of the Indian restaurant that's yellow inside -- name is escaping me right now -- but I like their chaats better than Rahjbog's), and Thai Son.
Astoria
Yeah, Philoxenia is open again in a new location -- 32-07 34th Ave. I went last weekend and it was really good. A friend and I had several small plates and then split a whole grilled fish -- the dips were all top-notch and the whole grilled fish was perfectly cooked. I definitely recommend it.
LIC or JH for dinner
I'll second Philoxenia. I went last Sunday and it's really good. It's casual but has a special meal feel to it. They do whole grilled fish really well -- and don't miss the haloumi. So. Good.
Sripraphai, Kebab Cafe, Spicy Mina's (other Queens greats?)
Philoxenia, a recently reopened Greek restaurant in Astoria, is very very tasty. I love their whole grilled fish.
Bistro-type food in Jackson Heights or vicinity?
There was something about it on one of the JH lists in the last day or two. Since there really isn't anything like it in (or right around) the neighborhood, I really hope the person moves ahead with it.
New French Patisserie in Jackson Heights
I had a brioche roll at Espresso 77 -- they served it with the soup -- maybe they also sell them separately?
jackson heights: anyone a fan of espresso 77 coffee house??
It's great -- if you do a search on this board (and also on the jacksonheightslife.com board) you'll see that it already has quite a few fans.
New French Patisserie in Jackson Heights
Do they have space to sit around there and read while drinking/eating? Or is it a take-out only kind of place?
Espresso 77 in Jackson Heights
Ah, good. I'm so glad there's another gushing customer out there. And I can't wait to go back for more...that latte really was one of the best I've ever had.
Espresso 77 in Jackson Heights
Add me to the list of Espresso 77 fans. I went in today for a latte and a scone -- both were delicious. I highly recommend the rosemary walnut scone. It was just moist enough without tipping into muffin territory.
I felt a bit silly though -- I was practically gushing to the barista about how happy I was that they'd finally opened. But I really am that happy about it. It's a great addition to the neighborhood and I love that it's owned by people who live here.
help ordering at rajbhog sweets?
honestly, just keep trying everything -- the young guy there is really nice and will talk you through the available items (as long as it's not too busy) -- just avoid the cranky lady, everybody else is pretty helpful and willing to help you figure out what's what. There is a tomato dish there that I absolutely love -- it's on the sweeter side. There's also something with radish leaves that is just fantastic -- has a terrific bite to the flavor.
Casual group dinner for 50 in Queens [Moved from Tristate Region]
I had a dinner for about 30 people at Pio Pio -- and it was great fun. I'd definitely do it again.
OK -- I tried to do the stupid link to location thing and it added in the freakin' cleaners and won't let me remove it. The right location is 84-15 Northern Blvd.

Yogurtberry - more new stuff in Jackson Heights
Just got back from Yogurberry and while I enjoyed the flavor (and it was very tasty with sliced almonds on it), the hollow center was annoying --- made it feel very expensive. And it's not so tasty that it felt worth the bucks.
