Windsor CT dinner next Friday

A group of us are arriving in Windsor CT this Friday night for a family event the following day, and are looking for a place to eat dinner. There are seven of us, including one vegetarian and one vegan. Asian would be great, and at least one doesn't care for Indian food, and one other is dieting.
Any suggestions??

Best dairy/vegetarian in Jerusalem, Israel

We'll be spending a couple of weeks in Jerusalem next month. Which restaurants should we not miss? We're vegetarians, but do eat dairy.

Thanks!

Shabbat meals in Jerusalem

Yes, we are.

Shabbat meals in Jerusalem

We'll be renting an apartment in Jerusalem in December, but because we're arriving so close to Shabbat ,we won't be able to buy and prepare food when we get there. I understand that we can pre-pay for Shabbat meals at a hotel in Jerusalem, and I'm looking for recommendations. We are vegetarians, but other than that, we're adventurous eaters. Our apartment is located on King George Street, between Agrippas and Ben Yahuda. I believe the area is called Zikhron Yosef. We don't mind walking for good food, but we'd like to keep it under 20 minutes, if possible.

RW--Elephant Walk--REALLY GOOD

We went to the Waltham location last night for dinner because EW has a reputation of being vegetarian friendly. What a disappointment. The fried spring rolls were far to greasy, and the sauce was completely tasteless. A salad that was billed a Cambodian salad consisted of wilted Costco greens, chopped peanuts and a dressing that was made with what tasted like bottled lime juice.

We split a tofu and rice noodle dish that tasted of sugar and canned tomato paste. Yuck.

On top of that, the service was very slow and indifferent. We won't be back. Too bad, because I do remember EW being really wonderful years ago.

What to do with Kong Kee Brand Gluten??

I bought something that I thought was seitan the other day at an Asian market, but now I have my doubts. The ingredients are vital wheat and water. It looks like a 12 ounce sponge. Any ideas on how to use it? When I google gluten recipes, I just get gluten free recipes, not exactly what I had in mind.

Why must all restaurant entrees have meat in them?

Actually, I know someone with a severe chicken allergy, but that's beside the point. Allergies are a whole other topic.

Why must all restaurant entrees have meat in them?

How about a chef salad with hard boiled eggs and/or beans? Or maybe a stir-fry made with tofu instead of beef or chicken? How about soups with a vegetable base? I wont' bring up tempeh or seitan, because I realize that they are still, unfortunately, out of the main stream.

Why must all restaurant entrees have meat in them?

I certainly don't expect every restaurant to cater to vegetarians if they're not part of their market. I wouldn't go to a steak house and expect them to cater to me. However, I don't think it's unreasonable that there be more of a choice. Like I said, I sincerely doubt that every omnivore wants to eat meat at every meal.

Why must all restaurant entrees have meat in them?

Wow! I guess I hit a nerve. Yes, there are certainly great vegetarian options in Boston and Cambridge, and many fine dining establishments do have a vegetarian option. However, sometimes you want to meet the in-laws for dinner in the 'burbs, or you're traveling on business with a group of people, or you're just on your way somewhere and you want to get something to eat.

I can't tell you how many hours my husband I have spent trying to find a reasonable place to eat that isn't in the middle of a veggie friendly city, doesn't cost a fortune and makes good food.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against cheese, but if I don't want to eat it at every meal. It also takes more than a side salad and a couple of pieces of roasted zucchini to fill me up.

Why must all restaurant entrees have meat in them?

O.K. I realize that as a vegetarian I'm the odd ball at most dining establishments, but I find it amazing that most places just assume that every patron wants some sort of flesh in every entree. Yes, I know that you can find eggplant parm, or some other cheese encrusted dish on some menus, but why do so few restaurants have even one non-meant entree? Haven't chefs ever heard of beans.

I'm curious: if you eat meat, do you feel that you must have it as an entree whey you go out to eat? If not, what would you like to see more of on menus?

veggie friendly Davis Square Sunday night?

I've been to True Bistro. It's the answer to my veggie-foodie dreams. I really hope it makes it.

New Indian Restaurant in Lexington Center

It's called Royal Indian Bistro and it's on Merriam Street. Has anyone tried it?

Knife sharpening?

I've never tried it, but I did notice that the Fabric Corner on Mill Street in Arlington has a knife sharpening drop off every Tuesday ( I think). You may want to call and double check, but it's certainly easy to get there from Cambridge/Somerville.

Chinese Food In Boston. What's different than elsewhere in the US

Actually, the lobster sauce is different in Boston than where I'm from, at least (Long Island). I grew up with a white sauce with egg in it. In Boston, it's brown with meat, or it used to be when I ate meat.

New, larger, Burlington Market Basket is coming

Wilson's is actually only three miles away from MB, but I do understand--especially at this time of year when traffic is so bad. They also have a store in LItchfield, NH, but I don't know if it's open year round.

Middlesex Turnpike: Market mecca

I just noticed that. Oh, well..no loss

New, larger, Burlington Market Basket is coming

Wilson's Farm, which is relatively close by depending on where you're coming from, carries fresh duck.

November Openings and Closings

Yes, it's a bit pricey, but it's worth it--particularly if you and your significant other are both vegetarians/vegans and want to eat in a place with a bit of atmosphere that has a wine list. We ate there last Saturday night for our anniversary and will be back.

Middlesex Turnpike: Market mecca

The restaurants going into this location seem like odd choices. Bugaboo Creek is also there. How many steak and seafood restaurants need to be in one shopping center?

Kosher tomatoes?

I don't know where you're located, but if you're in the Boston area, Market Basket Supermarket brand tomatoes are carry Canadian hechshaim, I think from BC, but I'm not 100% sure. and I'm pretty sure they carry such tomatoes and peppers. Since the product is obviously made in Canada, perhaps they ship to grocery stores elsewhere in the US.

Buckhead Area Dining Options

We had two great meals in Buckhead. One was at Cafe Sunflower, the other at R. Thomas. I was surprised, but there were a lot more veggie options in Atlanta than at home in Boston. Also, what's the deal with all the 24 hour places? Is it because of the airport, or is there something else?

Buckhead Area Dining Options

We'll be in the Buckhead area for a few days this week for a conference. Two of us are vegetarians, one is lactose intolerant and one doesn't eat pork or shellfish. Can anyone out there suggest restaurants that can accommodate all of us for dinner??

first bad experience with H-Mart in Burlington

I went there for the first time today, and was disappointed. The prices were higher on dried items than at China Merchandise (one exit north on Rte 128), and the produce was disappointing. I also don't understand why they're duplicating a lot of the products they carry at the Market Basket 100 yards away. On the plus side, the prices and variety of tofu was great, and the food court looked interesting, though I didn't try anything.
One question: was anyone able to find seitan there? I asked a couple of people, and they didn't seem to know what I was talking about.

Non-Romantic dinner Feb 14

No seafood, no animal stock. We eat dairy and eggs, though.

Non-Romantic dinner Feb 14

My family and I will be staying in Hollywood from Feb 13 - 17. Since Feb 14 is Valentine's day, it occurs to me that we might want to make a reservation to eat somewhere. The kids are teenagers. My son eats meat, but the other three of us are vegetarians. We all love anything Asian, Mexican or a bit out of the mainstream.

Coming from Boston, we're sick of vegetarian being interpreted as "lots of cheese and a couple of slices of zucchini ". I know that LA is a vegetarian paradise, but I'd love a few recommendations.

Kosher catering hall in Cape Cod/New England

Contact the Jewish Advocate Newspaper and ask them to send you their guide to Jewish New England. It lists every kosher establishment in New England, including restaurants, hotels, hillel kitchens and shuls. The Hilton in Cambridge and the Four Seasons in Boston are the only hotels I know of that have kosher kitchens. I think there may be one other, though. The most popular caterer around here is Andrew in Brookline. He may be able to help. Just remember that it's not as easy to find kosher food in New England than it is in New York.

Where can I buy hulled barley?

Most supermarkets have it in the same aisle with dried beans. You might want to also try the Butcherie in Brookline, I know they sell it.

Challenge - Veg/Gluten-free/and meat

It's not eating out, but to make your life a bit easier, you may want to buy some prepared food at Whole Foods. That way, your sister-in-law can eat well without you getting too stressed out.
