Downtown Cinci Sat Night

I know it's too late, but I went to Pacific Moon on the Levee and didn't like it. They are trying to make it more of a bar atmosphere and I thought the food quality was not as good as it was in Montgomery.

This may not affect Dim Sum, though.

Hope you had good food, and a good time!!

Downtown Cinci Sat Night

Blackfinn, here, has just opened in the space formerly occupied by McFadden's. I think they are both owned by the same parent company. McFadden's was basically as you described the Blackfinn in Richmond. Blackfinn's food menu {in Cincinnati} has more entrees as opposed to "bar food".

I haven't been there. It just opened March 14th. The restaurants in this particular location have never lasted long, leading to some people saying the location is "cursed". We'll see!!

Downtown Cinci Sat Night

There are a number of decent non-chain restaurants downtown. No need to go to Newport. Jean Ro Bistro is on Vine between 4th & 5th.

Small plates are available next door to Jean-Robert's at Pigall's, at the Twist Lounge

As mentioned earlier, Nada is new. Maybe that's what you thought was Nonna's.

I think Oceanaire put off their opening date to "Late Spring".

I've heard Boi Na Braza is not good. Same with Scotty's, although I have not been to either.

If you are going to KY, I would head over the blue Suspension Bridge to Covington, where you have Chalk Food+Wine http://jeanrobertgroup.com/chalk and Greenup Cafe http://jeanrobertgroup.com/greenup , as well as Keystone Bar & Grill http://www.keystonebar.com/ and Molly Malone's http://mollymalonesirishpub.com/.

But there is PLENTY in downtown CIncy.

Let us know where you end up and have fun!!

Soup Glorious Soup (Cincinnati)

Myra's Dionysus on Calhoun St. in the University of Cincinnati area has @ 8 soups per day. They rotate, but usually always have Thai Pumpkin, Black Bean and Avgolemono.

My favs are the asparagus, spinach, corn chowder, tomato cilantro and mushroom.

Cincinnati--Vito's Cafe in Ft. Thomas

Have you tried Thai Express in Clifton?

213 W McMillan St
Cincinnati, OH 45219
(513) 651-9000

It is take-out, but Thai people own and cook there. It is one of the few Thai places I eat, so not much to compare it to. I have eaten at Lemongrass, and thought it was over-priced and the portions were small.

Thai Cafe

316 Ludlow Ave
Cincinnati, OH 45220
(513) 961-5678

I have not eaten here, but pretty sure they don't have sushi.

Cincinnati chili: within-chain variation?

I can't tell you why, but I think Clifton Skyline tastes better than any other Skyline I've tried.

And Gold Star in the strip mall on Vine St. in St. Bernard is far superior to any other Gold Star.

I do believe both these locations have thicker chili, so maybe johnbycz is correct about cooking the chili down.

Just my humble opinion.

Stone Creek Dining Company in Montgomery, OH

We were going to try it on Labor Day, but they were closed.

Bartender rant... NO.. a daquiri is NOT always frozen!

"MARINER" is a sailor.

"MARNIER" is GRAND!! ;}

Bartender rant... NO.. a daquiri is NOT always frozen!

As a bartender, I work with a lot of "newbie" servers. In MOST establishments, the bartender is paid more per hour, because it is a skilled profession {maybe not where you are, but it should be}.

It is the bartender's job to skill the "newbies". That is why they get paid more. Yes, there should be more training, but I always have time to tell a server, it's not a "See See", it's a Canadian Club {C.C.}.

Yes, I am busy, and it is the server's job to garnish the drink. Sometimes I don't have the time..........,

>>>>However, I have customers who, if I don't put a couple of olives in their COSMOPOLITAN, think I have done something wrong {YUK!!!}

I was trained by someone, early in my career, who, when I asked where the "Bartender's Bible" {the rolodex, recipe box, or book}, was, said "If you don't know how to make it, ask them if they know. If they don't know how to make it, they shouldn't be drinking it." BEST ADVICE I'VE EVER HAD!!!

The whole "Friday's/Applebee's" chain culture has bred a lot of people that only know how to order a drink off of a menu, and most bartenders cannot recite a chain restaurant's drink menu {unless, they work at "said" chain}.

I can improvise, but I have to know the basics. Is it rum based, vodka based, bourbon based??

Unfortunately, most "chain restaurant drinkers" do not even know what they are drinking!!! As long as it's pink, fruity and/or served in a martini glass, do you really care??

And just for good measure, has anyone ever asked for "GRAND MARINER?

Here is some info {Cincinnati.com Foofie Blog}.

It says more info will be in the Life section of Friday's paper.

Bartender rant... NO.. a daquiri is NOT always frozen!

I had someone ask me for a martini one day. I asked gin or vodka, and she said "Gin? I've never heard of that. Martinis are made with vodka!!" Then I asked up or on the rocks {dumb question from me, right?} She said, "Obviously you don't know how to make a martini!! I don't know what up or rocks mean, but put it in a martini glass." ARGH!!!!!

We make cosmopolitans with vodka, triple sec, cranberry and lime juice, with a twist {no simple syrup}. I made one for this lady one day, and she, SERIOUSLY, wanted to know why I gave her a lemon that someone had already ate.

Some people just shouldn't go out in public. LMAO

I also, on the other side, have people that think they are going to stump me. For instance, I a guy order a salty dog with no salt. He couldn't just order a greyhound {or vodka and grapefruit, for that matter}.

Cincinnati Downtown

The restaurants owned by Jean-Robert DeCavel are your best bet in the CIncy area. For a high-end experience, his Jean-Robert at Pigall's is a-one. Jean-Ro Bistro is a more mid-range restaurant . In Covington, just across the Ohio River, is Greenup Cafe, and PhoParis {French-Asian fusion cuisine}.

Here is the website for Pigall's:

You can access the other restaurants' websites to the right hand top side of the page.

Pre-cooked food at Applebees?

I don't work at Applebee's, and it is not our policy, but I have seen some cooks cook a chicken breast halfway on the grill, then finish it in the microwave, just to speed up the cooking process, because they are lazy.

It's not right, but I've seen it happen.

Cincinnati:Joints that can hang with Tuckers

Kellogg Country Kitchen on Kellogg, in front of Annie's, is now Odell's Sports Lounge, and at the moment, does not have food.

I think the place at the antique mall is the same owners that were there before. I haven't been there yet, but that old location was a great space. The sign outside says "Kellogg Country Kitchen", but I don't know of anyone that has been in to check it out.

Montgomery Inn - Cincinnati

The Coyote Grille in Deerfield Township is a nice place. Not ethnic, although it may sound like it. It bills itself as Tex Mex, but it's very tame. Here's the website:

http://www.elcoyotecincy.com/ElCoyote/coyotegrille.htm

If you are willing to make the trip to Cincy, a lot of people like Montgomery Inn, but personally, I think it's overrated.

take-out tipping...

I WAS WONDERING IF SOMEONE WAS GOING TO MENTION THIS!!

I am taxed on a percentage of ALL my sales, take-out, or not.

Fast food employees and chinese/pizza take-out places do not tax their employees on their sales.

If you are at a sit down restaurant, and the server/bartender is taking your order, more than likely, they are being taxed on your order (@10%).

I don't "expect" a tip, but appreciate a small tip for my time.

Cincinnati:Joints that can hang with Tuckers

If you want to try Carl's breakfast, it's also interesting to note that he usually cooks with his gun on his hip, and he is constantly cleaning the grill, which is good to see, considering the "hood".

Another point is the breakfast is WAYYYY cheap, and you can get a cheap draft beer with your breakfast, if you imbibe. It used to be Burger, Schoenling and Hudepohl beers {all former Cincy brews}, but I think that is a thing from the past. They also have a great old jukebox, full of old soul and country tunes.

All of this may not "float your boat", with your breakfast, but it's still very unique.

Need opinions on Dayton, OH restaurants

Probably too late, and I am not from Dayton, so I don't know much, but when I go to Dayton, we always hit the Oregon District. The area is up and down, but I have always had good food, and there are plenty of bars.

I had dinner at the Cafe' Boulevard for more upscale food {www.cafeboulevard.com), but like the atmosphere at the Dublin Pub (http://www.dubpub.com/ourstory.htm).

Again, I am not from Dayton, so others may have better choices.

I hope you enjoy your stay!!

Cincinnati:Joints that can hang with Tuckers

Hi scrumptiouschef~

I love Tucker's for their signature home fries. As for Arnold's, I have always enjoyed the atmosphere, but the food has always been so-so. I still enjoy going there, on occasion. Sometimes the specials are good.

It is definitely not on the level of Tucker's, but if you want to try a "dive" with good breakfast, try the 1132 bar on 12th and Race in Over the Rhine. The owner, Carl, is a retired police officer. He cooks breakfast. He boils potatoes every morning and slices them, making great home fries. And he serves tomatoes with breakfast, as well (which I love).

The H&H grill in Norwood is also good for breakfast and blue plate lunch specials. The H & H Grill is located at 3753 Montgomery Road.

Also, check out Northside for some interesting eating. The newer, more hip restaurants are mixed in with some older places, like the the Blue Jay Cafe and Park Chili.

Truly, none of these places measure up to Tucker's, though.

Happy Eating!!!
