An Early Look at "FnB" - Scottsdale, AZ

Winemaker Dinner was worth every penny. One of the best meals we have ever eaten from beginning to end. AZ wines are amazing. Thanks for introducing us to them Pavle!

San Antonio for a Foodie - help please!

Forgot a few.

Mi Tierra had the BEST mexican hot chocolate and great tortillas - the market center was a disaster zone of construction though.

Acenar was good, but not overly memorable.

Whistler in the Summer

Looking for great recs for a foodie on a budget heading to Whistler in the summer. Already planning on the Whistler Tasting Tour for lunch (to try out a number of places and get the discount card to use the rest of the trip).

Happy hours, early bird specials, summer specials are all appreciated or even higher end places that are great to try at lunch for value purposes. Does the Entertainment book have anything of value to use up there? I am posting this VERY early in hopes that as things come available, people will post. Not a big fan of fried/pub style food or vegan.

Thanks in advance! :)

San Antonio for a Foodie - help please!

Well, San Antonio did not play out as expected. Cabbie from Airport was coughing up a lung and Hubby and I BOTH got a horrible flu shortly thereafter! So, we had limited opportunities to enjoy the local cuisine!

Highlight: Happy Hour at Chart House at Tower of the Americas. Sunset up there is spectacular. The happy hour menu/drinks were very reasonable too.

Best Light Meal: Pumpkin Soup at Achiote. And Wow that cornbread is amazing!

Best Lunch: Paella Buffet at Citrus. Seriously all that for that price? Amazing.

Best Bread: Sourdough with butter at Texas Land and Cattle. That is the ONLY positive thing there though. Service was horrific. Soup was pure salt. Pork chop was nearly inedible as it was so overcooked.

So wanted to try Tre, but the stomach did not cooperate.

Thanks for all your recs. Hope to get to come back another time without the flu.

San Antonio for a Foodie - help please!

Thanks up front for your input. We are headed to San Antonio for the first time. Hubby is on business so we will be staying on the Riverwalk. We will have a car though, so please don't limit suggestions to just that area - close by would be great though.

I have read many many of the posts already, but would appreciate a "Top, Must Do" list of suggestions. SA Specific are preferred over chains, but if something is simply the best, please include it no matter what it is! Mass crowds are not our favorite - though a few on the River people watching meals will likely happen! Unique with FANTASTIC food is the ultimate for us - please send us in the best directions!

What would be THE happy hour to hit (price and quality of food/drink)?
What is THE Tex-Mex to not miss?
Best breakfast option?
Best bakery?
Best lunch?
Best high end?
Best on the cheap?
Best Jazz spot?
Best almost non-tourist spot on Riverwalk?
Best tourist or hotel restaurant on Riverwalk?
Best local cuisine/sustainable - only local produce/products?
Best crazy/unique place (ex: like a carwash with the best burgers per FN)?

Scottsdale Resort Brunches

Looking for a comprehensive list of Resort Brunches available throughout the SE Valley (Scottsdale primarily). Please include highlights of what is included as well as current pricing. Marquesa's at the Princess used to be a favorite before it closed. Need to find what's the most unique/worth it out there now.
THANKS for your help!

Boba (Black Tapioca Pearls) Tea

I've tried most of the suggested ones on this thread now and have to agree with you...most of it was prettty pathetic. The best has been the kind I've made at home - great prices and options on Boba and Boba teas at Lee Lee Market. Since making my own, I doubt I'll ever be able to enjoy it as much out anymore!

Princess Cake - PHOENIX, AZ

I actually broke down and made one myself on in the last two weeks (yep - glutton for punishment turning on the oven in 114 temps!). It tasted great, but certainly wasn't as good or beautiful as the professionally made one I had in CA. I did find one bakery that said they would make it here in AZ. Haven't tried it yet but will for a special occasion. Here's the info:
"We do make the princess cake, it is yellow type cake, a cream filling, strawberry type preserve filling and marzipan on top. It comes in a cream type color but can be tinted light green or pink. It is an 8" cake and the cost is $65.00." info@scottsdalebakeryandcupcakes.com

Quick Vancouver Trip - Need Recs

Hello! I will be spending one night in Vancouver not far from the Port Metro Vancouver and one night near the Westin Grand. Looking for some great local restaurants - inexpensive and delicious happy hour eats or memorable/unique places. Middle of the road pricing is ideal - not looking for the high-end experience this trip! Really appreciate hearing what's great nearby! (Not big on curry or cilantro or vegan cuisine.) THANKS!

Hey Booklegger451. Sorry for the late reply! Steak....along with Bacon Wrapped Shrimp. I sure do like how you think though - I might just have to try and whip something up like that at home! I'll let you know if it's successful! (I'm guessing it would pair well with a creamy horseradish with bits of tomato dipping sauce!) :) :) :)

Tucson in June

We stuck to the "Originals" list and had wonderful meals! First night was at Cafe Rio. Yummy appetizers (my favorite was their steak skewers with homemade chips and blue cheese). My husband had steak and bacon-wrapped shrimp for the main course. I had the seared scallops with pineapple-jalapeno chutney. Light and flavorful - a little more of a kick would have been to my liking, but nonetheless, very good. All the deserts sounded fantastic (including a chocolate one with ancho chili), but we were too full to try any :(! The next night was Zivaz. It was a little jarring when first walking in. Menus on the wall and you order in a line before getting a seat. Then they bring the food out to you. Fantastic food though! Light and really fresh. The salsa verde was fantastic as were the hot tortilla chips. I had salmon seared with Ancho and it was done just pefectly. The accompanying rice had peas and carrots and was the spot on with the texture. My husband had a spicy beef entree of some sort and it was really spicy and flavorful. The fresh tortillas alone were worth the cost of the meal. Margaritas were good. This is not a place for a quiet or romantic evening at ALL, but certainly a great place for light and flavorful food. We would certainly go again! Our last night was at Gavi. WOW. We were with a larger group - so I didn't see what everyone got, but every plate was cleared! I had the cheese manicotti and it was one of the best I've ever had. That marinara sauce - OH MY! My husband had chicken formaggio stuffed with cheese, spinach and artichokes and served with a delightfully spicy tomato cream sauce with peppers. Leccabafi!! Most of the diners with us actually split their meals (they weren't first timers like us) and we should have too as there was simply more than we could eat. Looking forward to our next trip to town to try others on the rec list and come back to some of these new favorites! Thanks again!

Tucson in June

Hello Fellow Foodies! We're headed down to Tucson in June and would love to hear about non-chain places to check out. We will be staying near the Swan/Broadway area. Mexican/Italian/Southwest/Greek/American fare are favorites. We love to find bargains (great happy hours are always top on our list), but price is not the main concern...Looking for dinner recs primarily, but a good taco truck is always a possiblity for lunch - any locations of regular ones would be appreciated! Thanks in advance for your recs!

Reading through the posts, I have not seen any recent mentions of Taggia. Has anyone eaten there lately? What have experiences and the food been like in 2009?
THANKS!

Scottsdale restos--- fun for kids too

With the kids, and the HEAT in June, you might want to try Farrelli's at Scottsdale Rd./Thunderbird area. They are a Dining Theater and are not a chain. They show the latest movies - but you can eat full meals while enjoying the movie! It's got a great retro/art deco feel that's fun for the kids and the adults.

Another not as close place to try is Rawhide (they used to be in Scottsdale but have now moved south of Phoenix just off the I-10). When in Scottsdale, their picnic table restaurant had fantastic steaks and rugged grub/entertainment - hope it's still the same!

Sapori d' Italia-Fountain Hills (the old La Piazza)

Hello Gabriel,
Haven't tried it yet! Other than pizza, what type of entrees are on the menu/what range of pricing? IYHO, how does it rate in comparison to La Piazza (I was a big fan of their gorgonzola gnocchi!)?

Boba (Black Tapioca Pearls) Tea

Looking for your help with two Boba related questions:

#1. In the NE Phoenix vacinity, is there anywhere that uncooked Boba (Grade A XX Large Black Tapioca Pearls) and Boba tea all-in-one powders can be purchased? Online sources charge ridiculous shipping charges - looking to find where to purchase the ingredients locally.

#2. Where can good Boba Tea drinks be found in the valley? Tea Infusion in Tempe serves Boba (prepared very well!), however, they do not do the traditional blended Boba Teas. Tea Light Cafe in Scottsdale (Mayo Blvd.) serves the traditional blended tea Bobas, but the boba was LOUSY - MUSHY - either really really overcooked or just very old - yuck. Please share any locations you know of in the valley.

Disney - Help!

Earl of Sandwich was good - ridiculously crowded though! Raglan Road was the BEST meal we had the whole trip - too bad it was the last meal before the airport. The scallops appetizer was over the moon! And their sign out front advertised a happy hour! Thanks for your recs.

For unique - Jiko still is amazing. The Ostrich appetizer was WOW - too bad it wasn't available in dinner portions. Brian, the bartender is FANTASTIC. Nothing there is inexpensive, but the atmosphere and some meals are beyond words (on a disappointing note, this time the kalamata flatbread was well, not good - an absolute first in 8 years). BlueZoo at the Dolphin had the yummiest clam flatbreads though.

Disney - Help!

Howdy Foodies!

Heading to Disney with the Hubby for work - he's working and I get to play! Since I won't have transportation, I will have to stay within the Disney framework. 1. Recs for daytime eats where eating alone won't be uncomfortable nor overly expensive would be greatly appreciated. 2. Evening places to eat that aren't too over the top price-wise would be appreciated (my favorite to date is Jiko - I know it's not cheap - is anything really within Disney?!!). 3. And lastly, is there such a thing as a happy hour with cheap appetizers/drink specials at any restaurants within Disney?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have out of town visitors that are going to be staying at the Radisson Fort McDowell (on the reservation near Fountain Hills/Saguaro Lake). Has anyone eaten at the restaurants there? Any meal recommendations? Any recommendations for other places nearby to eat?

Princess Cake - PHOENIX, AZ

Please help!! I just called Karl's Quality Bakery and sadly, they said they do not make princess cakes. They make cakes with princess decorations on them though :) . I told her what a princess cake is and asked if they could do it and she said no. AHHH. SO, I would greatly appreciate any other recommendations for bakeries that know what a Princess Cake is and make them here in the valley (or outside the valley but are willing to ship it)!
