Argentine or S. American Market in Astoria or LIC

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm definitely not opposed to spending a few more minutes on the 7 if it means I might find Havennets.

Argentine or S. American Market in Astoria or LIC

I'm looking for Havennets (cookies) from Argentina. I'm hoping to find a market that may have them or something similar. Anyone know a place like this?

$10 and under, family friendly, Fresh, Good, Clean, and worth leaving the Outer Boroughs for?

I second Taksim as great food and a great value. I would also add Pardo in the West Village to the list - amazing roasted chicken and good sides at a reasonable price. $10 is a tough price threshold for delicious food in a sitdown restaurant that is appropriate for children in Manhattan.

Hill Country a Hit

My husband and I went to Hill Country for dinner last night, despite reading a few negative reviews. To my relief (it was my suggestion!), we had a really good experience both food and service-wise.

We shared a combo that included pork ribs, beef ribs, brisket and chicken. The pork ribs were amazing. If you order one thing, this is it. The brisket and chicken were both very good. The only miss was the beef ribs, which were dry and basically devoid of meat. Luckily, I was so full of everything else that I couldn't complain.

We also got four sides - cowboy caviar, green bean casserole, german potatoes, and cucumber salad. The potatoes and cucumber salad were great. The cowboy caviar was a nice, cold counterpoint to the salty meat, but the green bean casserole was a little blah.

Service from start to finish was impressive - friendly wait staff and butchers/cooks who took the time to find out what we liked and I even saw samples being offered to the undecided.

While the set-up can seem a little precious and it was getting really crowded by the time we left, the food and service made it a great experience.

No Reservations Suggestions for Tonight

Can you narrow it down by neighborhood, cuisine, or price range? Open Table can be helpful if you cross reference it with chowhound.

Los Angeles Hound needs help

Manhattan Chowhound poster RGR has so many great suggestions, especially for do-it-yourself NYC "food tours" that my recommendation is to look through his posts for great ideas in all price ranges, neighborhoods, and cuisine.

SOHO area lunch?

I recommend Mezzogiorno on Spring and Sullivan. They have homemade pasta and pizzas, which are excellent and the staff are very low-key. I also suggest Aurora on Broome and W. Broadway.

Lola in Soho

I wanted to add my update now that my husband and I gave Lola a try. The staff are very nice and the decor is fun, although I have to agree with thievery about the banquet hall atmosphere.

Our food was very good. I had the shrimp and grits, which was a generous portion that came out a bit on the cold side. That was a surprise since we were one of the few tables dining. My husband had the fried chicken, which was delicious. BUT the portion was astonishingly small for the price they charge. He got one chicken breast and a side (I think it was potato salad) and his dish cost about $25. It was really outrageous.

I wish they would adjust their price points, because until they do we won't go back. We spent $13 for a calamari appetizer. It was good, but the price is way too steep for a standard appetizer. Our entrees were both in the mid-twenty dollar range and, for what we received, just too expensive.

Again, the food was all good and the service was fine, but at those prices there are several restaurants in Soho I would rather try or revisit, places that have great food and atmosphere at the same price. It is sad to see a restaurant sitting virtually empty night after night (we live in the neighborhood), but I really believe the prices are the reason.

Best BYO Downtown?

Ivo and Lulu on Broome, West of Sixth Avenue is BYOB and has good, inexpensive food. It is very small and, depending on when you go, you may be in for a wait.

Feel good splurge meal for ex-NYer

We had dinner at Savoy on Monday and it was terrific. Great food and wine, plus a cozy fire. It made for a relaxing and enjoyable meal. Our server was also very good.

15 People, Separate Room for Speech?

Are you or anyone in your party affiliated with a local university? Some rent event space to alumni if it is available. I would recommend calling your alumni relations office and asking.

What restaurant did you eat at on Thanksgiving?

My husband and I had Thanksgiving dinner at Bar Americain and it was terrific. We started with a lobster salad, which we split. There were huge chunks of lobster, some avocado, and a light dressing. Delicious. I had a chopped asparagus salad for my next course and my husband had a johnnycake topped with duck and cranberry. It was amazingly rich. I loved my salad too. We both had the traditional turkey dinner and that was great as well. The service was really top-notch and our entire evening was really perfect. I am so glad we skipped the cooking and dishes and celebrated here instead.

Surf/turf for rural family?! HELP!!

nixienox has a good suggestion with eating out for lunch. Peter Luger has a delicious and inexpensive hamburger for lunch and they would still get the experience.

Also, consider introducing them to some ethnic food they wouldn't otherwise have the chance to try. There is plenty of meat and seafood to be had in Chinatown or, well, just about any ethnic restaurant. You'd be surprised at how adventurous people are willing to be once they're finally in the Big Apple.

I just have to say this: I hate Rocco's on Bleecker

I've only gone in once, despite it being in my neighborhood too, because of the downright hostile attitude. Your experience really sucks.

Degustation - Our Experience

My husband and I had a terrific dinner at Degustation last night. I enjoyed the bar set-up and the space overall is very elegant. The service is top-notch, friendly and knowledgeable and we enjoyed watching Chef Genovart at work. There were a couple of disappointments, but we left very happy and sated.

We ate -
Spanish "tortilla," Quail Egg and Shallot Confit
The best dish we had, by far. It is a wonderful mix of flavors and textures.

Pork belly and tomatillos in a watermelon gazpacho*
Very good, but suffered when we compared it to the pork belly at Tailor.

Seared Scallops in a Mussel Broth with sea beans, grapes and dehydrated cherry tomatoes
Perfectly cooked and all the ingredients really complimented each other. The cherry tomatoes were especially delicious.

Bonito en Escabeche with black olives and micro arugula
A beautiful piece of fish. I really loved the dehydrated olives with the smooth slightly fatty flavor of the fish.

"Cheese steak" with tomato and roasted red pepper escalivada, raclette cheese emulsion, pain de mie and herb salad
This was one of my top favorites as it was crunchy, salty, sweet and tangy. So, so good.

Squid with heirloom tomatoes*
The squid was tender and the tomatoes were fresh and delicious.

Quail and shitake mushrooms*
The quail was cooked perfectly, but I was a bit underwhelmed with the dish as a whole. There wasn’t much excitement on the plate.

Chocolate covered banana with macadamia nut coating*
This was a big disappointment, as it ended up being a pretty boring chocolate covered banana and what tasted like chocolate pudding.

Assorted cheese plate
I regretted the chocolate dessert I ordered once I saw the cheese plate. It was a gorgeous selection and the pairings were amazing. Skip the sweets and order this instead.

*These are not the proper names from the menu, but I didn’t write them down and can’t remember the exact wording.
