Suggestions for a convivial, tapas-style birthday meal for a vegetarian in Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Boerum Hill?

Thanks, that's a good idea! I live around the corner from Convivium, unfortunately my mom also isn't crazy about seafood, because they have a nice seafood appetizer platter. Franny's might be a good bet, too.

Hi,
My mom is a vegetarian (not vegan) and loves snacks. I'd like to take her out to dinner somewhere near my house in the North Slope. We went to The Vanderbilt last year, which was perfect, because it had a lot of nice vegetarian appetizers and a good atmosphere, but it would be nice to try something new. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Chloe

Juice Bar on 5th Ave. / Park Slope?

Marina's diner on 5th and Bergen or Dean has tropical juices/smoothies, but not fresh- they're probably made of goya brand frozen fruit. Also, that new vegan deli on bergen between 5th and Flatbush is a likely bet for fresh juice.

Ethiopian - Park Slope/4th Ave??

I'm so excited! I love Ethiopian food. How does Ghenet compare to other NYC Ethiopian places like Meskerem or Queen of Sheba?

My horrible Mai takeout experience

I had a similar terrible experience with takeout from Thai Sky. I've always liked eating there, but when I got delivery, the curry was very bland and the duck salad was the most disgusting thing i've ever tasted. The roasted duck was really off, and was one of the worst tastes I've ever had in my mouth. I'm DEFINITELY never going there again, either. Ugh.

Atlantic Antic this Sunday- Best. Street fair. Ever.

What are your favorite things at Atlantic Antic?
I like the blintzes, fried chicken, mini- sweet potato pies, shawarma, bbq pork, key lime pies, tamales, and cod fritters. Also, this year I'm going to try the ice cream from Blue Marble. Is there anything I've forgotten?

If you go, check out my brother-in-law's band, Eli Paperboy Reed and the True Loves. They'll play around noon towards the end of Atlantic near the water.

See you there!

Wing Wagon

Has anyone been to "Buffalo Wild Wings" in the Atlantic Terminal Mall? I heard they're part of a chain from the Midwest.

The Family Store Bay Ridge

It's on Third Ave. between Ovington and Bay Ridge Ave. It's so good, and the owners are incredibly nice. I get things for lunch from there pretty often- also, their halva is great.

Taro Sushi. Believe the hype.

yes- and their "taro lunch box" special can't be beat. They make some of the best eel i've tasted outside of Japan.

fancy, fabulous but quick dinner before a show at the southpaw?

I recommend getting the tasting menu at Palo Santo, which is on Union St. between 5th ave. and 4th ave. It's a pan-latin american restaurant and wine bar, and both the food and decor are creative and eclectic. For the tasting menu you sit at the bar, and the chef keeps giving you dishes until you can't eat anymore. I've never gotten it, but whenever I see people doing it they seem to be having a great time.

Great newish spot on 5th ave--apropos cafe

It's a pleasant spot to relax and enjoy a cup of tea, too. I stopped in a couple of times while x-mas shopping on 5th ave. and came out feeling so much better.

Fish Sauce- Park Slope, Boerum Hill?

Hi,
Does anyone know where to get fish sauce in the Park Slope, Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, Fort Greene areas? Maybe an Asian deli?
Thanks!

Where can I get packaged, cooked chestnuts in Brooklyn?

They have asian vacuum-packed ones at the Met supermarket on smith street near the checkout.

Tanoreen in Bay Ridge....?

I was just there and my favorite dish was the fried cauliflower- it was lukewarm but very tasty.

Cheese Shops in Brooklyn?

If you live near Park Slope, try Bierkraft on 5th ave near union- I think their selection is better than Stinky's, and the service there is always friendly and knowledgeable. Plus, you can find all kinds of cool beers to pair with your cheese (my husband is obsessed with getting a growler from there).

Ice cream in Park Slope

What about Tempo Presto? They usually have several interesting flavors of gelato.

Helios - Park Slope

I like their avgolemono soup, and since i've only eaten there outside on a nice day, I can't comment on the atmosphere (I also don't enjoy empty restaurants as much). I have gone there twice for the soup though- I think it's addictive.

Ki Sushi on Smith St.

I can't disagree more about the quality of Ki Sushi. I thought that it was markedly worse than the two other area sushi places i've been to, Osaka and Cube 63, and it's nowhere near the same league as Taro sushi.

I went on Monday night with my husband. We started with the king salmon and scallop appetizer, which was still frozen in the middle and drenched in and completely overwhelmed by a white truffle oil and citrus sauce.

We also ordered the Spicy Girl roll which tasted like the spicy tuna at Cube 63, and I thought was quite mushy (though my husband liked it), and shared a Sushi Deluxe plate, which cost the same as the one at Cube 63 (around $18), and was the most boring sushi i've ever had. There was very little selection (OK tuna, "eh" salmon- definitely not the freshest, and several identical pieces of bland and mushy white fish which i couldn't for the life of me tell apart).

Also, understandably (I guess) for a new place, the service wasn't great. My husband ordered a piece of inari which never came, and the waiter never even offered to bring the salad or miso soup that supposedly came with the sushi deluxe platter.

Overall, i'll probably never go there again, since Cube 63 is only a few blocks away. If Ki Sushi wants to keep charging what it does, they should stop serving "cheap sushi joint" food.
