Anyone remember The Trio restaurant in Phoenixville

I'm just getting back to looking at this, pass the Eagles Nest occasionally when I go the back way into work. I'm going to have to try this one!!

I remember Thursday nights heading down to the shore and we'd pull up outside of the Trio and dad would run in and get 4 sandwiches and we'd head down the shore and eat them on the way. I think my mother-in-law and her sister worked there also...obviously a long time ago. They grew up further down on Bridge street before you get down to 23.

Need PA-centric foods for my new book

In Berks Co I know a lot of local churches do fundraisers selling Oyster Pie's. Never heard of them any other place...

Need PA-centric foods for my new book

There are actually quite a few PA cookbooks, especially PA Dutch. As for the fastnacht's mentioned above, they were made and sold on Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday, the day before lent, it was a way to use up items and that would not be cooked during the observation of lent.
Something else I didn't see mentioned was sour cherry pudding and apple dumplings. Both of which were actually dinner at my house. Sour cherry pudding is actually a really dense moist cake that forms a gorgeous golden brown topping, pull that out of the oven and put a piece in a bowl and pour mild over top...heaven. Same with e'bl dumplings. The wos wit dressing is basically a warm sweet and sour bacon dressing, we serve over basic ice berg lettuce with hard boiled eggs. The mention of a treat soda and PA dutch birch beer, but nobody mentioned the aTreat black cherry, cream (white or red), or sarsparilla soda!! And how about entenmann's! Herr's chips used to be made close by in Phoenixville. Years back there used to be a place call the Trio in Phoenixville that had the best hot pork sandwiches. Mad I'd love to find someone that had that recipe!

Pineapple Upside Down Cake?

Try it some time with apples...use the same recipe but replace apples for the pineapple. Just peel and slice them maybe 1/4 this and make a nice pattern in the bottom of the pan before adding the batter. Just about as easy and really tasty!

Dinning in King of Prussia

Definitely try Han Dynasty, best Chinese I've ever eaten. If you like spice, this is your place, don't even think about ordering extra hot!! (Not that everything is spicy, but if it says it is, believe it.) The only Chinese restaurant I've been to lately that is usually packed with Chinese people! Han has an Americanized menu and tradition Chinese menu. Just wonderful!
For Italian if you don't mind a little longer ride say on a Friday night, everyone should check out Anthony's Trattoria up near Mt Penn (this side of Reading a few minutes off of 422). I've not found an Italian restaurant in SE, PA that comes remotely close. The cream of garlic soup is the best you will have any where in the world!!! http://anthonystrattoriareading.com/i...
Definitely worth the drive!

ICE CREAM in SE, PA - where's the best?

I'm out in the burbs, Nelson's Ice Cream has been around for generations as a family run business. What other local ice cream joints have the best home made ice cream?

Wild Game restaurants

Looking to find wildgame restaurants close by...we're out in Montgomery County and looking to head out for dinner Saturday night for a birthday celebration. If anyone knows of a wild game restaurant in SE, PA please let me know. We have already tried Half Moon in Kennett Square, which was good, but looking for more of a dinner experience instead of pub...

pork bellies in the Chadds Ford/Kennett/WC region?

I am on my second go at making homemade bacon. First came out awesome, now I'm trying a different cure and smoke style. I get mine at Kolb's Meats in Spring City. Out of your way, but they butcher every Tuesday, you have to let them know that you want bellies.

Where can I get pork belly, pork femurs, beef drippings, and all the other things good butchers should have?

Try some of your chinese restaurants or markets, they almost always have or can get pork belly.

Live Crabs in Bucks or Montco

There is a new place in Collegeville, right near Trappe Tavern. I can't recall the name, but you go there to get fresh crabs and crab cakes. You take everything home and cook there. I believe the same company has a place up in Douglassville.

This weekend in Pittsburgh

Hey there, I see most of this is kind of old, we're heading this weekend with a bus full of ND fans to see the Pitt/ND game. I see a big recommendation is for South Side...where exactly is that? We're staying at the Sheraton Station Square so we have all that going on right there for entertainment/food. Is this not a good locale for food and beverage? We were also looking for an Irish Pub to cavort at (not all 52, some are quite elderly, but probably like around 25 here and there)...any suggestions? We won't have access to the bus, so it's walking or taxi cab....

R.I.P. Collegeville Acme and Wegmans

Hubby stopped by the pub this week. He had to wait to get a seat, only like 5 minutes. Once seated he noticed the oysters on ice right in front of him. The oyster of the day was Blue Points. Ordered up 3 to have while he sipped his beer. $1.99 per oyster. He didn't venture past the pub. A friend went to get seafood last week and came home with swordfish steaks that they hand cut directly off of the fish laying there!

Pittsburgh puzzler...

Question for you on dress for the Grand Concourse. We are really spending a football weekend so I'm a little concerned about dress for this place. How would you describe, business casual or more relaxed than that?

dreaming of apple dumplings - Philly

I"m not sure if they have a glaze on them, but we make them homemade, not really a recipe, but basic pie dough, rolled out. Granny smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into a little smaller than 1/4's. Pile a few pieces on, put in some butter, maybe 2 tblspns, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, Bring up side of dough and seal. Make until golden. We take them out of the oven and right into a bowl. Pour milk over top of them and sprinkle with sugar. MMMmmmmm.....

3 day visit to Pittsburgh for Pitt/ND game

Looking for recommendations for good places to eat while in Pitt. We will be arriving Friday early afternoon with a bus load of Notre Dame fans. We are staying at the Sheraton at Station Square. We will have the rest of the day Friday to do what ever we would like. We won't be goign as a massive group, we'll break down into smaller groups of maybe 8 - 10. Saturday will be spent tailgating and then the game and probably dinner after that(we still don't know what time the game is!).

Hoping for some recommendations for food and maybe a good Irish pub or two for drinks.

Penny's Pizza (Limerick) Re-opening?

I was there last Thursday. One hour 45 minutes in line. Started at the bottom of the steps and made it to the door in like 25 minutes. Then I had to stand inside watching all of those pies coming out of the oven bubbling hot and smelling that wonderful Penny's pizza for over an hour! Torture!!! I finally put my order in and 2 1/2 hours later I was back waiting in line to pick up my pies. It is exactly like it was before, I don't think it's changed a single bit!! I heard that they closed early on Sunday, proably ran out of product! I've NEVER seen it anything like that...

Where does one draw The Scrapple Line?

We have a REALLY old PA Dutch cook book and it was stated to boil a whole hogs head. If you look up recipes now, a lot of them call for using a pork shoulder. I love me some scrapple, whether it has the squeal in it or not!!!
