Got to Be NC Festival in Raleigh

If you want to go to the NC Food & Wine Expo while avoiding the midway, park in the lot on Hillsborough St. that's adjacent to the railroad tracks. Enter the fairgrounds through Gate 2. Go past Dorton Arena and turn left into the Expo Building. That will avoid the midway, but the side doors are usually locked from the outside. (You might find one open or someone coming out.)

Some more food items you can find at the festival: turnip sandwiches; pork chop sandwiches; spare ribs; Chipstix; corn on the cob; fresh strawberry desserts; fried freen tomatoes; chicken lLivers; Angue burgers.

OrganicGal, Old Ken Cole's ice cream will be located between Dorton Arena and the pony rides, near the waterfall and the grandstand. They will also be near a vendor selling BBQ from a big, red truck or something like that. :-) Ken and Marilyn's set-up is rather small. Look for their hit-and-miss engine next to their concession trailer. (This is NOT the same vendor that has a hit-and-miss place in Heritage Village.) I hope you like the ice cream as much as I do!

Got to Be NC Festival in Raleigh

I'm sure they wouldl love to see you! This is their first time at this festival, so I don't know where there spot will be. I do know they will be on the grounds and not inside in the NC Food and Wine Expo. I can find out where they will be, and I will let you know as soon as I talk to my source. ;-)

Got to Be NC Festival in Raleigh

Last year, they sold out of BBQ. This year, they'll have more people cooking in an effort to avoid that. Pork and chicken. And the $10 ticket is for all-you-can-eat.

Got to Be NC Festival in Raleigh

The Got to Be NC Festival is next Friday through Sunday, May 21-23, at the state fairgrounds inRaleigh. Food events include: NC food and wine expo, in a nice air-conditioned building, it's a great way to beat the heat, and nearly all vendors offer samples in addition to products for sale; Shriners' fish fry on Friday (shrimp, trout, catfish); Masons' Pig Jig BBQ cook-off on Saturday; and lots of food vendors on the grounds.

My favorite ice cream vendor will be there - Old Ken Cole's Ice Cream from the Hendersonville area. I've been known to have 3 or more servings a day when they are at the Mountain State Fair in Fletcher. They add their own home-grown fruit to their ice cream for flavors such as apple, peach, strawberry, and black raspberry. They use real vanilla beans for a yummy vanilla flavor, too.

The new vendor I want to try is Island Noodles, described as freshly made soba noodles, stir-fried with ginger and garlic and vegies, and served with an island sauce.

Admisstion and parking are free. For more details about food events and the many non-food events, go here: www.ncagfest.com

Myrtle Beach Steakhouses?

And a chef cooks eggs to order at the buffet. My hubby loves it and always tips the "egg chef."

Ack! Make that the LEFT turn towards the zoo (for Sir Pizza).

Hot dogs in North Raleigh?

My husband likes those. I could be the only person in Raleigh who doesn't like much of anything at Char Grill. :-|

Hot dogs in North Raleigh?

Suzy Q! Where you been, girl? ::-) I haven't "seen you" in a while. We used to get hot dogs like that at Home Depot. They aren't Roast Grill, but they're pretty good. They might become our Saturday dogs.

Need Breakfast or Lunch Recommendations in Asheboro, NC

Los of chain places on Hwy 64 going towards the zoo. My dad's favorite for breakfast (also good for lunch) is Jed's on N. Fayetteville Street, but not close to the zoo. They're an old-style meat 'n' 3. My favorite for lunch is Sir Pizza, Hwy 64, on the right heading west, not far from the right turn towards the zoo. There's another meat 'n' 3 on Hwy 64 before you get to Asheboro, Blue Mist. They also cook BBQ, but the Q is just so-so. There's Bill's in Siler City, really good burgers. And yet another meat 'n' 3 is Dixie III Restaurant, just after Sir Pizza.

Thanks for the responses. I think we'll just stick with Roast Grill. Besides, I'm sure George would miss us if we showed up less often. ;-)

Hot dogs in North Raleigh?

We think Roast Grill hot dogs are the best. Period. :-)

But sometimes we want a couple of hot dogs closer to home, in North Raleigh. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Not-to-be-missed BBQ in and around Raleigh

We like Smithfield's brunswick stew, too! But not their barbecue.

Do these three places cook over wood?

Agreed - avoid the fries. You'll be able to eat more of the REALLY good stuff.

Ummmm, so who said A&S and The Pit represent Eastern NC BBQ? :-) I don't like whole hog style (no "veins in my teeth," please), and these two places allow me to avoid the Eastern stuff. Just my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

I also vote for Allen & Son and The Pit - and against BBQ Lodge. I thought it was nasty and couldn't finish it. :-(

NC State Fair food goes vegetarian

Thank you for you this post! Yes, I've been noticing this trend for some time, but it has been growing slowly. The Fair has always had such things, but you had to look very carefully, read small print, etc. At the Got to Be N.C. Festival earlier this year (also put on by the N.C. Dept. of Ag), someone was selling soba noodle bowls. I thought some grilled shrimp would have made them perfect :-), but they were very tasty just the way the sold them - lots of stir-fried vegies with soba noodles and tasty sauce. Hot sauce on the side. Yes, it's out there folks. Be sure to buy it if you want it to be there next year! (Wish I could make some specific suggestions for this year's Fair, but I haven't been yet.)

The name of the market manager is posted on the Ag Dept.'s website, along with his phone number.

Raleigh Farmer's Market Restaurant

burgeoningfoodie, are you thinking of the one near Greensboro? It has a blue roof and is on I-40. It's actually called the Piedmont Triad market. Yes, they have an eatery, and it's the Moose Cafe!

Raleigh Farmer's Market Restaurant

Moose Cafe is also at the N.C. Farmers Market in Greensboro, and I think Moose operates the restaurant at the Western N.C. Ag Center in Fletcher (home of the N.C. Mountain State Fair, opening Friday).

Fair food: N.C. Mountain State Fair

The N.C. Mountain State Fair opens Friday, Sept. 11, in Fletcher (near Asheville and Hendersonville). They are still setting up, so I don't know about specific foods or vendors yet. Well, I do know that Doris is there with her mini-donuts and fresh-brewed iced tea!

If you find something there worth sharing, please post.
