Can I get a private room for Dim Sum on a Sunday in Chinatown?

Thanks! I had forgotten about the Golden Dragon!

I will go down & talk to people this week & see what will work best.

Can I get a private room for Dim Sum on a Sunday in Chinatown?

I'm trying to organize a party for about 40 people on Sunday where we could have dim sum in a private room (or a divided room). We need to stay in Chinatown because the group will all be downtown.

Any suggestions? I was going to try CBS because they usually are less crowded than Empress & Ocean.

Thank you for you help!

Where can we get the BEST custard for a friend with a broken jaw?

The custard and tapioca at Philippe's downtown are very old-fashioned, comforting, and delish. I think the tapioca is slightly better, but grab them both for your friend.

Chichen Itza 6th Street Closing?

Just heartbreaking. And I'm surprised, because the last three times I was there, it was really busy--even though it was a Sunday night.

Foodie Wedding

I've also been to a wedding at Descanso Gardens catered by Patina, and it was horrible! The food was incredibly salty and incredibly boring. I also had the ravoii and it was revolting. I felt badly for the Bride and Groom, but fortunately they were too stressed to notice the sub-par food.

It's a gorgeous site, so it's too bad you're stuck with Patina if you want to use it!

Lunch truck or taco truck for party

Tacos Jennis sounds great. Just wondering if anyone else here has used them & what meats you liked best.

Thanks for the report! I'll head straight here after my next trip to USC. If the place does well, maybe they'll be able to branch out like Chichen Itza.

Best hard tacos?

Get thee to Ricks in Silver Lake!!!! The hard shell beef tacos are delicious and huge. They follow the tried and true formula of your mom's, except the salsa is not from a jar.

Need dinner venue for 25-35 people for husband's 40th. Help!

Taix is a standby for this kind of thing... they have nice private rooms of various sizes, and are amenable to A/V stuff. Food is indeed not the best ever, but the wine list is great and it's definitely within your budget.

Lunch for one near Monrovia?

The Peach Cafe is the first place I thought of... Cute spot, solo-friendly, and with good salads and burgers. I've never had their pies because I'm always too full from the main course!

It's Thai--New in Echo Park

It's Thai has recently opened in the old Tantawan space in Echo Park, on Glendale Blvd. just north of Sunset.

The restaurant has new owners and a new, industrial chic interior. The menu is more like Rambutan's than Mai Ploy's. We had just a few things on our first order there:

--Nur Yang bbq beef: very delicious, with a deep, smoky hot sauce

--very tasty Kua Gai noodles

--a more than adequate Prik King with fresh green beans

We ordered to-go, and everything was packaged well for travel.

One nice aspect of the menu is that many of the dishes are offered as dinner specials, so you get the entree with rice and salad, which is great for solo diners.

The quality of the produce was good, and the prices are in-line: $ 8-10 for most entrees. They also deliver within a 3 mile radius,

New Vegan in Echo Park - Tantawan

Just wanted update everyone that Tantawan is permanently closed. The space is being taken over by a new Thai restaurant. From the looks of the remodeling, it will probably be open soon.

Awesome breakfasts in LA, I can name two. How about you?

Pharmnerd,
Where you find great CBH at Mammoth? I guess this Q is more appropriate for the California board...
Thanks!

p.s. I recently had the CBH at Philippe's downtown, and it was pretty darn good. Not crispy, but still tasty.

Silver Lake Taco Quagmire

I'm in Silver Lake, and I agree with your taco assessment! Great tacos are sadly few and far between. I haven't found anything comparable to Taco Zone, but here are two alternates for lunch:

The fish or shrimp tacos at The Best Fish Taco in Ensenada on Hillhurst.

The old-fashioned hard shell beef tacos at Rick's on Fletcher.

Where do the Chefs Go?

Years ago, I used to know Ken Frank (of La Toque fame). His favorite after-work spot was Ghengis Cohen on Fairfax!!! I think that most off-duty chefs go to places with stiff drinks and not necessarily stellar food.

Crispy Duck a l'Orange

Taix in Echo Park serves it--but only on Saturday nights. I've never had it there, but the surroundings would definitely take you back to a time when duck a l'orange was the height of classy dining!

The Under-the-Counter Composter

Do some basic research on backyard composters. If you don't put in meat or bones, you will not have smell or varmints.

I have had a backyard composter for over 10 years, and there is no odor unless you open the lid and stick your head inside. My neighborhood is filled with racoons, opossums and rats, and they totally ignore my composter.

piroshki/pirogi quest

For delicious savoury pastries, check out Karabagh Market at 5363 Santa Monica Blvd., just across from the onramp to the 101.

I believe that their pastries are mostly baked and not fried, but they seem to have a different selection every time I go in,

Looking For One of a Kind, Fun, Nutty-Campy Restaurant Experience

How about that campy favorite, The Gardens of Taxco? My mom used to go there in high school, so it's pretty old. It's not the best Mexican in town, but it hits the spot (and here's a secret--they'll give you two half-orders of any entrees if you can't pick just one). You won't even mind that the margaritas are made with wine instead of tequila. Definitely cheesy fun, and non-touristy.

I haven't been there, but Damon's in Glendale is supposed to be very tiki-kitsch.

sardinian restaurants

I'd like to find one too--not sure if it exists, though.

If you are ever in San Francisco, make sure to check out La Ciccia--it's my favorite Sardinian restaurant.

What at which? Oax in LA

La Morentia is now my go-to Oaxacan place in LA--I just love it.

La Morenita serves at least 3 kinds of mole--negro, coloradito, and amarillo. Their tlayudas are awesome, and the goat tacos are delicious. I've only made it through half of the menu because I keep ordering the tlayudas and coloradito over & over.

The Gardens of Taxco was my first thought, too.

For something different, the Yucatanean restaurant Chichen Itza is doing a Mother's Day thing thise year.

What ever happened to Soul Folks downtown? They had amazing fried catfish (and fried chicken, and spaghetti, and...)

Salbutes and Panuchos???

Just posting the links for the two Chichen Itzas--I love them both. The USC one is more casual, the MacArthur park one is a full sit-down restaurant with beer & wine. I finally tried the queso rellno there, and it was delicious! OH, and they're doing a mother's day brunch this year, which would be a nice alternative to the usual brunch places.

Also, Border Grill in Santa Monica has panuchos. it's not my favorite restaurant at all, but if you're in SM and have the craving, it might be worth stopping in.

Anyone tried Andiamo in Silver Lake?

Andiamo is a new pizza joint on Sunset, in the mini-mall where Manilla Sun is/was.

Any reports? It looks like more of a take-out place than eat-in. The menu touts organic ingredients and delivery by gas-saving Vespas. With the recent glut of pizza places in S. L., will this one make it?

Mama's Hot Tamales/Taco-Man Catering?

I haven't had full-blown catering from Mama's Hot Tamales, but I have picked up very large orders from them for parties. The tamales were always great, but most guests did not like their beans (they use some unusual herb or flavoring that many found distasteful).
The tamales do travel well, and you can pick them up hours before your event and warm them in a steam tray.
Taco catering sounds fun too!! If you do a search on taco catering, I know there are reports from the last year.

Before Starbucks ever came to town, there was the ice-blended mocha and ice-blended vanilla at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. That qualifies as a Los Angeles invention!
