Wheaton, IL 60187 - Anything local and good for breakfast, lunch or dinner nearby?

Don't forget L'Anne's (french-asian fusion) in Wheaton Town Square, discussed here:

And also, Glen Ellyn borders Wheaton and offers many fine choices, discussed here:

3 day trip to Chicago for young couple

Proceed carefully. Your "nice dinner" is planned for Monday, but many of the best restaurants are closed on Mondays. Be sure to double check opening days and times.

Fonda Isabel in Lombard

Fonda Isabel Mexican Cuisine & Bar in Lombard is featured on Groupon today (8/25/11). Can any 'hounds share impressions, good or bad?

Disney chow for foodies

We've enjoyed California Grill in prior visits to the World. Can any Orlando "Hounds tell us if it's still great, or has dropped off a bit?

Looking for Salsify

also known as goatsbeard or oyster plant. It is a root vegetable, I believe.
Any ideas on where to buy some would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Looking for good place in Oak Brook

Antico is one of our favorites. We eat there often, and think it is better, and a much better value, than Tuscany. However, Tuscany is a bit more sedate -- (white tablecloths vs. butcher paper@Antico, and similar style touches)

Best restaurants in Saugatuck/Douglas-S. Haven, MI?

SOTE has been consistently good for us -- we've been a dozen or so times since it opened. Interesting food, very solidly done (generally). sometimes they haven't quite mastered the wood burning brick oven, so some pizzas have dissappointed.

Foodie Purveyors

A food-sophisticated friend reports that the recently opened Lemon Tree Grocer in Downers Grove is very good (much better prepared foods than Whole Foods' deli section, and, more broadly "What Fox & Obel wants to be"). Would like to hear from others on this store as well.

Dark Chocolate Sprinkles in Chicago

How about the bulk stores "Home Economist".
Here's an LTH thread on same:

Anything better than Aurelio's pizza near west burbs?

We like Antico Posto (a LEYE northern italian in the Oak Brook mall) quite a bit. They offer a brick-over baked, thin-crust pizza which is consistently excellent.

Staying at Lisle / Napperville Hilton Aug 18 - 22

From the Hilton Lisle, you are surprisingly close to dowtown Glen Elly and Wheaton. in Glen Ellyn, Mykha's (white tablecloth vietnamese) is a personal favorite. Very do-able, if you have a car (and probably not bad by taxi).

Here's a post on West chicago, which also picks up Wheaton & Glen Ellyn.

Slanted Door Update?

FWIW, my two colleagues and I ate at SD on 5/18 and very much enjoyed everything we ate, esp. the brick chicken and the tapioca.

Saugatuck/Holland/Douglas finds?

Check this topic, which has been updated as recently as last fall, which includes reviews of EPC and SOTE (which I continue to endorse):

Slanted Door Update?

Chicago hound visitng on business next week, I've loved Slanted Door in the past as best modern/upscale vietnamese I've found in the U.S. However, I haven't dined there for a while. Can some SFO 'hound-homeys give me a fair but discriminating update. Still worth our one dinner on this trip, or has a newcomer arrived replicating SD's mix (in my memory) of Asian ingredients, adept cooking, fresh crisp flavors and a bit of style. Thanks much in advance.

Western 'Burbs (Naperville Area): Any Good Bakeries?

I'd second Labriola. The cafe is flourishing and has expanded through this recessions. Excellent food and great value. Pretzel rolls in particular are great.

Rehearsal Dinner Suggestions Near Wyndham Hotel in Lisle

If you want a beautiful location, and are willing to work with a caterer rather than a restaurant, check out the banquet hall at the Danada forrest Preserve. We considered it for our rehearsal dinner (20 years ago). If was the houst of Danial & Ada Rice:
" The dining room, library, living room, and two porches can accommodate up to 70 people. The Atrium comfortably seats up to 250 guests and features large windows that connect visitors to the surrounding landscape." Its 0.7 mi. north of your hotel. http://www.dupageforest.com/preserve.aspx?id=4196

Western 'Burbs (Naperville Area): Any Good Bakeries?

If you are willing to drive 12 miles, you would very much enjoy Toni's (formerly Toni Maries) in downtown Hinsdale (or, take the Metra train from Naperville to Hinsdeal, and walk less than a block from the station).

Saugatuck, MI recs?

We have been to Salt of the Earth three times since it opened, and have enjoyed every meal. Very interesting food, very well prepared. Prices are fair for the quality. Very pleasant atmosphere. Excellent breads. Desserts need a bit more work. Good (and interesting) cocktails. Energetic service. It has drawn very nice crowds, even after Labor Day. The cuisine is not as inventive as Journeyman nor as good as J. at its best, but not as bizarre (avant garde) as J. and with fewer misses and better prices.

Seeking Souffle

We are planning a dinner out in or near the loop and would like to finish with a dessert souffle. We are fans of La Sardine, west of Greektown. Are there other options we should consider? Thanks, hounds.

Oakbrook (Oak Brook) Shopping Center - Super Specific for the Locals

Antico Posto is one of our favorite restaurants anywhere. Very good casual italian food (more northern than southern), quite carefully prepared, well seasoned, reasonable portion sizes. Excellent pizzas (from the wood burning oven). Light, tasty gnocchi. Excellent pastas and subtle, interesting sauces. Lovely tiny desserts at lunch. The antithesis of its one-time corporate cousin, Maggiano's. More Cafe Spiaggia than Spiaggia, but always an exceedingly pleasant time at a very fair price (cheaper than Mon Ami or Wildfire). Nxstasy, come on out and try it.

Soup Dumplings

Chicago Chowhound family planning a visit to NYC. Where should we go for great-tasting soup dumplings? Some Zagat readers dis Nice Green Bo recently? Is Joe's Shanghai still worth?
Any helpful opinions greatly appreciated

What's the best bakery in Chicago for sweets?

In the west 'burbs, try Toni Marie's in downtown Hinsdale.
And I agree that Bittersweet on Belmont is excellent

Saugatuck, MI recs?

per William R. Wood | Kalamazoo Gazette Wed. December 03, 2008, 9:32 AM

FENNVILLE -- The Journeyman Cafe and its sister restaurant, The Rye, may be down, but don't count them out, the owners say. . . .

Another NYer visiting Chicago (mostly West Chicago though)

From West Chicago, you are fairly close to Wheaton and Glen Ellyn. My strong recommendation there would be Mykha's, a lovely and delicious white-tablecloth Vietnamese restaurant in downtown GE. I feel its the best Vietnamese in the Chicago area.

Lunch in Lakeview

Bittersweet Bakery serves a lovely, light lunch. It can be a bit crowded, however.

Shopping for Pork Shanks

A recipe calls for pork shanks, which we are having trouble finding. We can find pork hocks, but not shanks. We tried Whole Foods, Caseys Market in Westmont, Prime and Tender Meats in Hinsdale and Westrbook Market.
Any other suggestions? As you can see, we are in the west suburbs, but we would drive as necessary.

Vietnamese in the Chicago area

Check this thread: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/116556, a bit dated but still useful.

I'd strongly concur regarding Mykha's in Glen Ellyn, particularly for special occasions.

Western Michigan eats

If you are willing to travel to Exit 34 on I-96 for Crane's (very good fruit pies) you may want to drive just 2 miles further to Journeyman and Rye Cafes in downtown Fennville. Both have fabulous, interesting deserts featuring local, seasonal fruits. More discussion of Journeyman, generally, at http://www.chowhound.com/topics/413534
