[DFW] Best Mom and Pop/Hole in The Wall Ethnic Places [DFW]
We went back to Taj Mahal recently for the last time. While originally very good its gone downhill over the years. The last visit the tea was undrinkable and the entrees boring to bad.
It was sad that a place the used to love reach this point.
Kulfi in Dallas or Plano
I know that Kaurina's makes Kulfi (and interesting versions of ice cream) locally, but
what stores carries them? Their website (http://www.kaurinas.com/)
doesn't list retail sale locations. Once whole foods carried some but it
wasn't there the last time I visited.
Any big stores carry this, or any of the small/local ethic groceries?
Thanks, John
Chili in Texas
Chapman's chili was awesome, but they are now closed.
I'll eat at Tolbert's whenever I am near Grapevine, but their
chili is just ok.
A Good Indian Buffet for Lunch in Plano/Richardson/Addison/North Dallas?
I've only been to India Spice once for buffet. Almost totally ignored by waiters, both
when we went in and during the meal when we wanted drink refills or bread.
Then it took 20 minutes to get the bill. Food was just average. Not going back.
I haven't been to the Maharaj buffet. Been twice in the evenings. My food was ok,
but my wife didn't care for it either time.
Has anyone tried Curry Pot on that corner?
Wolf Brand Chili Clone
When I first came to Texas Wolf Brand Chili was good (for a canned chili).
Unfortunately when they moved production outside TX
it got worse. Much worse.
Really Good Chinese Food in Plano!
I've been to their restaurants, both on Coit and near Ranch 99.
The one on Coit had the rudest service I've ever seen, even ignoring the
fact that they refused to serve my wife the dish she wanted (bitter melon something).
I ordered something easy (I forget what) and it had bad meat, bad vegetables,
and bad sauce.
On top of this the restaurant was ugly and shabby.
I'll never go back.
The one near Ranch 99 was better. At least 2 of the 4 people with us liked the food.
Still there are too many Chinese places in Plano that actually serve good food
for us to go back.
10 best things to eat in Dallas
Pizzaholic has only submitted 4 articles, all this afternoon, all about this pizza joint.
Looks like a duck, quacks like a duck.
Where can I find DaVero Olive Oil in Dallas
I just saw an article by the www.DaVero.com people and am interested in trying
their Olive Oil. Is there anywhere in Dallas that sells this?
As I'm on the subject what do people think are good Olive Oils?
I just got some Texas Hill Country oil, but haven't had a chance to open it yet.

Spicy food
I find that the original, at Spring Creek and Custer, is significantly milder than Jasmine II or III. (On Parker&Alma, and Coit&Park)

Rusty Taco -- 38 minutes for a taco?
Thats a long stretch of road.
Can you tell us where it is, or even the name?
Akbar-Plano
Back when Akbar's was on Coit it was one of the better Indian restaurants around.
When they moved to Plano we were thrilled, Sadly, the food quality went way down.
And lets just say that I don't expect to see thing moving in the buffet.
I won't be back.
Best Cakes - Plano
I haven't tried the cakes, but Willie Mae's has long been a prized source
for wedding cakes.

Mexican Food in Dallas Metroplex
Cuquitas is listed as closed. Is there another location other than Henderson?
(DAL) Where can I find ghosts?
Few places sell the peppers. CA John's does have a good number of products using
the Jolokia. I can attest for the Jolokia Mustard, and the Holy Jolokia hot sauce.

Best Burger In Dallas/Fort Worth
The Big Easy (near Park and Central, West side) has got one of the better
burgers around (and the frys are usually excellent). They have also got,
according to our NOLA friends, the best New Orleans food in DFW.
Certainly their muffaletta is excellent!

Best Burger In Dallas/Fort Worth
J.C.s has got a very good burger. We are at the Allen location for lunch a lot.
They also have a 3rd location on the South side of I-190 East of Custer (I think).

Does anyone know of a good tea house in the Dallas Area?
I second the Lavender.
Three of us went there in the spring and had a very nice
lunch with interesting teas.
I don't remember if they serve High Tea, though.
Mole in Dallas?
I'm still searching for mole, but Aparicio's in Plano, at 18th St (just West
of Avenue K) has my favorite mole so far.
They used to be Plano Tortilla Factory, but several years ago built a bigger,
and classier restaurant. We've gotten the tamales for Christmas Eve
for several years.
Weekend in Downtown Dallas
This weekend A-Kon was held in downtown Dallas.
They probably were not drunks, merely Otaku.
Dallas BBQ
I've been to Hard Eight 4-5 and have had a very different experience.
The brisket varied from OK to excellent (largely at my estimate of good).
The sauce wasn't very good, but the hot bbq sauce was very good.
Everyone thought the chicken was excellent.
Their Jalapeno poppers were good but I found after eating more than one or two
my interest ran out.
My only real complaint was how easy it was to order too much meat by
sampling 'just a piece' of several different meats.
Pho in Dallas?
My wife is the Pho fan and her favorite so far is at Mei Mei China at 405 Legacy Drive.
This is a combined Chinese - Vietnamese place, and she thinks this is the
best Pho we've tried yet.
best chow DFW neighborhood
Don't forget Big Easy. My friends from NOLA say its the closest thing to home. Don't know
if that's true, but its very good.
There is also a large number of mid-eastern restaurants that have popped up in the
last few years.
Chicago Street and Chicago's Finest for good pizza. Grimaldi's is just up in Allen.
And you have the Shops at Legacy.

Closest & best BBQ - Plano
Dickey's has the best BBQ in Plano ONLY if you go to the right one.
The Dickey's in East Plano on 14th is the oldest BBQ in Plano
(and supposedly the 2nd Dickeys ever). The other Dickey's can't begin
to compare to this one!
I've had excellent ribs at Spring Creek BBQ and I've also had very bad ribs there,
so they don't get my vote.
