Most Memorable Cape Cod Meal of 2011 and Your 2012 Dining Plan?

My most memorable meal of 2011 was at Oran Mor on Nantucket, so I'm not sure that counts here (?)

My 2012 dining plan:

Ocean House
Fin
Sesuit Cafe (was closed for a private event last time I tried)
Osteria La Civetta
28 Atlantic

STILL mourning Abbicci's, and Lyric's reviews haven't exactly excited.

Vecchitto Italian Ice (Middletown, CT) is OPEN: Summertime is here!

YES! This is my year (only took 44!)

Middletown CT - Happy Hour

You know more happy hour specials than I do, so I can't add, but thanks for sharing your info!

Wondering if anyone knows about Eli Cannons, I don't think they have any happy hour specials per se, but anything else? I can't help but think that the loss of the parking lot next door has to have hit them hard, as well.

Copper Beech Inn question

As I said I know I'm in the minority. Maybe he was having a bad night, maybe it was someone filling in? 2x's same experience. I did enjoy the food however.

Red House in Deep River, CT (was du Glacé)

It actually wasn't a Ladies Night sponsored by the restaurant, just my friends and I on our monthly sojourn.
I agree, no marketing, no nothing. If I hadn't stopped to look at the menu I wouldn't even have know they were open, not exactly good business.

Copper Beech Inn question

They now have a bistro/wine bar Brasserie Pip in addition to the main dining room. I have no idea if it's the same chef as when you last came, but honestly I haven't heard much about the main dining room since Pip opened. I know there is at least one thread on CH about it if you search. I myself really liked the food, but the two times I've been the service (maitre d) was so snotty I won't be back. I am in the minority on this, though.

Red House in Deep River, CT (was du Glacé)

Was a fried pickles and okra app, not dried!

Red House in Deep River, CT (was du Glacé)

I went last night, the space looks great, staff was attentive and efficient (we sat in the bar.)

I went for Ladies Night, we shared the same salad with the weird goat cheese, didn't finish it. We had the dried pickles and okra app, we all liked it- and I don't like pickles. We also had the nachos with pulled pork. The pork was on the dry side, but it worked with the nachos, which were crisp and cheesy. Shared a burger- I wanted to try the burger with the egg, but nobody wanted to share that one. The burger was good, not great, came medium as ordered, fries were crispy.

It's clear Deep River has been crying out for a place like this, as just about every table was full.
It's not great food, but pretty good. A good place for a burger and a beer, which every town needs. I'll be back.

The River Tavern, Chester, CT

Alicia thanks for the info! I hadn't heard that, but I have heard good things about the Oyster Club. May be time be a drive.

The River Tavern, Chester, CT

This I'm happy you had a good experience, sounds like its reminiscent of those I used to have there. I usually don't pick that much (honestly!) However, I have been going there almost since it opened and what used to be a great experience has become so much less so, and it disappoints me.
Also, I don't think the prices are too high, but generally we are dropping a lot because we do apps, a meal, dessert, drinks and/or wine. Which we choose to do of course, but I would much rather find a restaurant where the meal and service are both consistent, which I'm not finding here any longer.

The River Tavern, Chester, CT

*When* I go back, that's what I would do kattyeyes. I've never had an issue with the service at the bar, though I'm still loathe to have a full meal after yesterday.

The River Tavern, Chester, CT

I was such a huge fan of this place, but my last couple of visits have been so-so. To me so-so is fine if I hadn't been accustomed to very good/excellent and I am not spending a ton of money.

A few months ago husband and I went and ate at the bar. The evening bartender is wonderful, and they are still using fresh juices and no mixes. We had some apps and hubby enjoyed his main course ( I can't remember what.) What stuck in my mind- and I haven't been back since- was my steak which was ordered rare came rare, but was literally charred on the outside. Ok, took it with a grain of salt, every place can have an off night.
Went back again yesterday for Mother's Day, which again has its own problems. Husband picked a good time (3:30) figured it would be quieter and we would have 'lupper' since we had a late brunch. All was well- no salt and pepper with the bread and olive oil, no biggie. The kids enjoyed their burger, Caesar salad and mussels. Husband had a salad of field greens, strawberries, walnuts and locally- made feta, good. I skipped a starter and had a lobster cavitelle with some fresh peas in a tasteless cream sauce. Nice pieces of lobster, well cooked, dish was crying for seasoning. Husband had a lamb shank with artichokes in a soupy broth, he enjoyed it. When food was delivered we were never asked to refill drinks, husband had to flag someone down. Desserts all around, they were ok.. Generally an underwhelming experience.

I have liked this place for a long time and will continue to go for drinks and snacks (they have great guacamole and chips,) but I feel like I shouldn't have to make excuses for a place that I generally spend $150+.

Red House in Deep River, CT (was du Glacé)

Looks like this spot has reopened as The Red House, searching shows there is another place in New London or Norwich of the same name, same owners?

The menu looks interesting, regular old chicken tenders and burgers, but also some standouts:
Fried pickles and okra for an app., a sandwich of Dr. Pepper basted beef brisket with a BBQ blue
cheese sauce, and a Japanese Gaucho steak with a wasabi balsamic glaze, fries and coleslaw.

They also have a band schedule listed for the weekends.

May 15,16,17 in Mystic, CT

I would suggest Kitchen Little (now at the Mystic River Marina) for breakfast- outstanding.

Flying Bridge, Falmouth

I figured because there was 0 on here about it. For the Girl's Weekend I had started another thread for, some of the group is staying in Falmouth. While I have Sesuit Harbor Cafe in mind (plus the tour up 6A you suggested,) I thought I could be a little flexible. From what I see the best in Falmouth is Osteria La Civetta or the new Mexican place? While I'm dying to try Osteria it's not exactly the epitome of Cape Cod I was looking for…

Reviews? Comments?

Thanks.

Non-mother's day birthday on mother's day in Hartford.

Ha, like!

Amari's Sandwich Sunday Brunch

That's a shame, I was planning on trying it next time I was there.

Jason Hawkins & Carole Pecks Good News Cafe on NBC30 this morning

I apologize for the sentence breaks above, my phone posts weird to this site.

I have also noticed the cheerleader aspect, no bad or even
mediocre comments at all- total commercial. At least one of
the restaurants (I can't remember which) I have been to and
it is ok at best. I take his reviews with the same grain of salt
I take 'The Best Of' votes. Good for the general public, but for
Chowhounds? No thanks.

4 day Bermuda Vacation--must visit restaurants

Just back from 4 days, and we didn't go to any must-visit restaurants, sadly. At the risk of being scolded for another Bermuda thread I will report.
We stayed at Cambridge Beaches, which is at the far Western part of the island & spent a small fortune on taxis, (I think your hotel is a bit more central.) Apparently there is some type of dining card which enables you to dine between some hotels, I know ours and Ocean Echo at The Reefs both did. Frankly after eating dinner at both and reading another review in which they had eaten the same exact meal the same night as we did at Ocean Echo, I have deduced that some type of food supplier is behind the dining cards. We had a breakfast buffet at our hotel each morning, basic but with the added touches of smoked salmon, capers, cheese and meat plate, baked beans and broiled tomatoes.
Lunch our first day was on the beach at the hotel from the Breezes restaurant, we had some chicken sandwiches on ciabatta with sweet potato fries, good. Dinner was at the Tamarisk in our hotel. I honestly can't remember what my husband had (wahoo?) He like it. My starter was Bermuda fish chowder, my first experience with it. I found it salty, the rum and pepper mixure you can add was a nice touch. For an entree I had the tenderloin, rare, it came as ordered, was teder and tasty.
Our 2nd day we had lunch in Hamilton at the Hog Penny Pub, husband wanted a burger, they were good, but small. Pub food. Dinner at the Frog and Onion at the Royal Navy Dockyard, pub food again, though I liked their fish chowder better than what I had had for dinner.
3rd day we had lunch at our hotel again, maybe the best meal I had: a grilled tuna salad with mango, yellow peppers, candied macadamia nuts (pictured.) Dinner at the Ocean Echo restaurant at The Reefs. Almost walked out due to being ignored, for a LONG time, but it was 8:30. Rolls came to the table, no butter, nobody came back for a good 20 minutes, we ate them anyway because we were famished. I had the lobster bisque: a watery, lobster flavored mixture with some chopped chives, awful. For dinner I had the seafood tagliatelle: linguine with mussels, rock crab and shrimp. The sauce was completely without flavor or seasoning. Dessert (this was a prix fixe menu) husband had bananas foster and I had the fromage blanc with fresh berries. Both desserts were the best part of dinner.
We had met another couple staying at The Reefs at Horseshoe Bay Beach earlier that day, and they had told us to try Coconuts (at The Reefs also) instead. The husband (a fellow foodie) had gotten the impression his tomato soup the evening before was a doctored can soup. Should have listened.
We will definitely be back to Bermuda, the most gorgeous of all the 8 islands we've been to, next time will try to stay more centrally so we can dine better.

J.A.M.S.S. in Old Saybrook, CT

Went here for breakfast today with the kids and houseguests. Had been told by a friend who lives in Saybrook how good it was. Arrived at 9:30 (Sunday) got 2 separate tables (smallish seating area.)
Daughter had Eggs Benedict, big, thick slices of real ham. I had the special surf & turf Benedict (crabcakes and sirloin.) Hollandaise was good, I have yet to find a great one at breakfast out. . Crab cakes were mostly crab, little filler. Husband had the Maryland Benedict, crabcakes as the meat. We had a side order of corned beef hash, homemade, very good. Friends had a Portugeuse wrap (eggs, chorizo, onions & peppers) and french toast. Looked great. The prices are on the expensive side for breakfast, but well worth it, portions are fairly generous (son couldn't finish his 1 chocolate chip pancake.) The staff is friendly and pleasant. My one complaint is the coffee- should be better considering the quality of the food.
We will be back.

'Epitome' of Cape Cod restaurant?

Thank you, Ciclista. I'd love to take this crew to Nantucket, but we are
going to be on a time constraint.
I'll remember that for Labor Day weekend, my husband & I
go for anniversary/birthday weekend and haven't been to The Pearl yet.

Cocktails Old Saybrook/Clinton

Hi! Drive by last week & they weren't open yet,
will be stalking ;)

Cocktails Old Saybrook/Clinton

Fresh Salt at the Saybrook Point Inn has great drinks, and a beautiful
view. The food, IMHO is to be skipped.

Back to Bermuda

Any updates for restaurants in the western part of the island? Most of the threads I have seen are 1+ years old. We will be staying at the Cambridge Beaches resort and our breakfast is included. I have seen a few reviews on Trip Advisor stating the hotel restaurants (The Tamarisk Room, Breezes, and Shutters Cafe) are very good. No offense to these reviewers, but I would prefer some fellow Chowhound opinions/recs?
Will be willing to travel a bit for dinner, but not too far as we will most likely be using taxis.
Thank you!

'Epitome' of Cape Cod restaurant?

Never. Is it battered and deep fried? Seems like a waste of lobster to me.

'Epitome' of Cape Cod restaurant?

Fried lobster? This life-long New Englander has never heard of it, do tell?

Define "Grinder"

I grew up in Middletown, CT and every sandwich
on a roll (sub, hoagie, etc.) is called a grinder to me.
I also know chocolate sprinkles on ice cream as
shots, so there's that, too. :)

Looking for great scacciata like D&S or Marino's used to make in Middletown, CT?

I forgot you found it, kattyeyes! I will put this on
my calendar so I won't forget to go.
Now craving it…
