Stotties?
Well I got round to making stotties last night. cheated and used the bread maker for the dough and hand shaped into 2 stotties. Both in retrospect too thick, but the dough nicely chewy and soft. My other half was one of the boys I would meet in the stottie shop at lunchtime so it was a bit of a nostalgic trip for both of us.
Next time I'll do half the quantity and make them thinner, but a nice change from my usual healthy multigrain malted loaf.

Stotties?
Ahhh stotties! I used to meet the boys from the school across the road in a stottie shop in Newcastle where we would congregate for our lunch. Ham and pease pudding, or if you were posh, date and cream cheese. I was visiting family in Newcastle over Xmas and bought a stottie from Greggs(used to be Greggs of Gosforth before they expanded...) it was just a good as i remembered, floury surface, quite dense wholemeal bread, but NO BITS in it!! I wish my local Greggs made it, I might have to have a go myself.
What's good in the Islington neighborhood of London?
I was in Au Lac last night as we have been to Il Bacio too much recently. great food in both places.
Other favourites-Sunderban and Yildiz in Blackstock Rd and Little sardigna. Rather mediocre meal in San Daniele in august so not been back.
I was living in off Holloway rd for a while recently. Amigos for Mexican take away is really great-no eat in option but wonderful food. Peche Mignon for breakfast is great especially in the summer for the garden, and La Muse isn't bad.
And the Finsbury Park cafe is great for a fry up breakfast!
Ghent or Bruges: which is a better base food-wise?
Just back from a long weekend in Bruges, what a great city. We were staying in the very centre. The old chocolate house is wonderful for breakfast-mix your own hot chocolate and delicious waffles. The brewery museum had surprisingly good food for one lunch and i we snacked for the other 2 lunches as we'd had such large breakfasts. 1st night-In Dem Wittenkop-very good rabbit stew. 2nd night-Vlamiche Pot-very flemish menu with huge portions of beef stew and chips. The last night was the best meal and the most expensive. Park restaurant. Very very good-lovely atmosphere, smart but not oppressive. The waterzoi was fantastic and the sabayon was one of the nicest deserts I have had for ages. My other half has reviewed them on trip adviser if you are interested. The best bar was De Garre-we were a little overwhelmed at the choice so the waiter just took over and gave us some great selections. It was our 2nd visit to Bruges so we didn't rush around doing the museums this time. We watched the movie "in Bruges" for the umpteen time on my laptop while we were there too. Fun to spot the locations used.
It was only 30 mins on the train from Gent and 1hr from Brussels.
FOOD MARKET - SOUTHBANK CENTRE SQUARE [London]
Went to the South Bank today. I had some great ice cream from a small van-"sorbitium ices." They haven't been around for long. Bramley apple and toffee, and fig and honey. Both were really delicious-not too sweet but really flavoursome. There were a couple of stalls selling olive oil with flavourings which were pressed with the olives rather than being added afterwards. Really tasty!
London: a great lunch for carnivore and vegetarian?
Morgan M does a good set lunch. About 15 mins walk from Highbury and Islington tube
Mushu [London]
sushi next door?
There is a new sushi restaurant next door(opens on Euston Road not Warren street)
I've had 2 takeaway boxes this week-made to order but worth waiting for. I'm no sushi expert, but these tasted far better than Wasabi on Tottenham court Road where I often get my lunch.
I'd be interested in a sushi expert's opinion!
Mushu [London]
I work just around the corner and it's a useful place for lunch, quite tasty but a bit of a wait when busy. The pot sticker dumplings are tasty. My colleague says the sushi next door are very good(Euston road rather than Warren St) but I've not tried it yet
Little Sardegna, Finsbury Park, London
I must go back there.
Il Bacio is only along the road and we are there so frequently, the waiters gave us our own table.
Some London schooling on curry, please
yes, Sunderban is still going strong and I probably go there 3 times a month. Still working my way though the menu but all dishes are good.
solid eateries by Arsenal tube station and Islington neighborhood [London]
Just got home, soaking wet-I think I'll try Dotori for supper-walked past 100s of times but never tried it.
Au Lac on Highbury Hill is my usual Friday night takeaway treat. Good Vietnamese

Breakfast-opposite Finsbury park entrance-finsbury park cafe in Seven Sister rd does good breakfasts. My nephews rated it the best thing they did in London when they stayed with me! Yildiz-blackstock road-very good turkish mainly grilled stuff, they do testicles which the nephews found hilarious. Il Bacio-sardinian on blackstock road and Little Sardigna nearly next door-both very good. Garufa on Highbury Hill-Argentinian steak-havent been there yet but my next door neighbour rated it.
Cupcakes in London?
I had my first cupcake ever from Hummingbird the other day-red velvet and was very underwhelmed. The stuff on top was sickly sweet and the cake was pretty tasteless. A waste of good calories-give me a chocolate brownie or almond croissant any day. When i was a little girl my mum used to make butterfly cakes for parties-victoria sponge mixture in paper cases, with tops scooped out and then glued down like wings with buttercream, lemoncurd or jam, but they were not nearly so sweet. Maybe it's me-I think my tastebuds have grown up.
Lasagne Bolognese at LIDL
the Lidl smoked trout is delicious and I always go there for parmesan and proscutto. Have a £4.99 lobster in my freezer now from Lidl.
London over Christmas/New Year's
have you tried couchsurfer?
http://www.couchsurfing.com/
I'm not really around in London much between xmas and new year and I haven't offered accomodation but I've met up with several people visiting London and taken them for a few drinks or shared a meal.
The YHA has quite a few places in London and during holiday time you might be able to stay in a university hall of residence, try googling University of London
South Indian / Keralan food - North or Central London?
Ragam, 57 Cleveland street, does pretty good S Indian food. Not far from there on Euston road is Rasa Express which does basic bento box type veggie or meat lunches. The Kerala resturant just offf Regent street was good last time I was there about 18 months ago-we had the buffet and lassi to recover after queuing for our Indian visas at the High Commission.
London with Child in Tow
agree re La Porchetta-you can watch the chefs throwing the dough around and my nephews were given bits of raw dough to play with while we waited for their pizza. This was in Stroud Green Road but I imagine it's the same in Holborn.
Question on water (also for the rest of Europe)
The tap water where we were staying in Tuscany last year was really disgusting and smelled of rotten eggs. Everyone drank bottled water.
London tap water is good especially if filtered and chilled.
Food at WOMAD
I'm off to WOMAD weekend of 25th. Please let it not rain like last year! 5 inches of mud....
One of the highlights of the festival is the food. We only take snacks with us so will be eating 3 meals a day from the stalls.
Particular highlight from last year was the goan fish curry stall.
Does anyone else have any recommendations?
Montrealers in Finsbury park area for a month--please help!
I'd forgotten Au Lac. Often cycle home via Liverpool Road and pop into Viet Garden about 1/2 way up on the L going north. Delicious pho although it sometimes leaks if taking it home as a takeaway.

Have just joined Chowhound. I live just off Blackstock road and agree with all the above. My parents live "up North" where there are very few Turkish Restuarants and alsways love going to Yildiz for the mixed grill, although last time dad had "thesticles" which were tasty if a bit chewy. The Imam Byaldi there-aubergines and tomatoes slowly stewed-are delicious. Also recommend Il Bacio especially the sardinian specialties. Happy to show round the area especially if we get a break in the weather!
