Fish market etiquette

I have been a seafood clerk for about three years. I don't see anything wrong with a customer asking to smell a product for purchase, especially with the cost of some items skyrocketing. I normally place the item in a plastic bag, and hand it over the counter. It eliminates the need to touch it at all! I work in a department with several other people, and even when we all use our better judgement, things can be missed. A customer wanted to buy some calamari steak last week, and as I lifted it on to the scale I got a noseful of fishy odor. I quickly let her know that the squid was past it's prime, and offered her any other item for $5.99lb as a replacement. We have sold bad fish before, I'm ashamed to admit, but the best thing you can do it that unfortunate situation, is to let us know what happened so we can fix it and pay better attention to the situation. Feedback, negative and positive, is essential to your satisfaction.

Best Hangover Food

dude, I just had a terrible one this morning. Ack! To kill it, I consumed about 1/4th of a sync Vitaminwater, which was soon evacuted from it's place of rest. I then drove around, first picking up a Southwest black bean and corn grilled chicken salad from Chik-Fil-A, a large macaroni and cheese and ten not hot wings from kfc. I then made one more stop at Mickey D's for a large cup of tea. after consuming half of what I'd purchased and sleeping it off for about 5 hours, I feel so much better!!

Select Grade Standing Rib Roast?

Yesterday, I purchased a select-grade standing rib roast to cook in the oven. It was the only grade available for purchase, as I waited until the last minute to go shopping. It has a nice fat cap, but definately not as much marbling as I'm used to seeing at the high-end grocery store I work for. I cooked a Choice roast last year and it was fan-freakin-tastic. But the lack of marbling in this roast has me a little worried. does anyone have any hints to make it as great as it was last year? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hooray for After-Holiday Grocery Shopping!

Today, I purchased a 12lb organic turkey for about six dollars! I always check out my local grocery stores for great deals on the day of/after holidays. In the Fresh Foods department of the Harris Teeter I work for, I found containers of whole berry cranberry sauce and turkey gravy for a nickel apiece, and a 2lb package of cornbread dressing for a buck. Finally, a 1lb package of haricot beurre for 99 cents completed my purchase! (I realized, once home, that I'd forgotten to get a can of chicken broth, the whole reason I'd left the house in the first place.) Does anyone else search for holiday bargains? What's your best find so far?

4 Pounds of Salty Bacon. Help!

Hey hounds! My frugality sometimes surpasses my common sense. I was shopping at a Piggly-Wiggly a few days ago, and they were having a meat cooler sale, with 5 pounds of bacon for $5.99. (ZOMG.

$1 McDs doublecheeseburger vs. the $1.89 BK model

:) I work @ burger fling. Wow, only 1.89 at your location? awesome!! it's 2.98 here. I like the McD's version more as well. mainly because if you order it with no salt on the beef patty and get swiss cheese and bacon and bastardize every single element of the sandwich, it still won't cost more than two bucks per burger. And I don't like the flame broiled beef flavor that kinda lingers... for days. Yech!

Sushi/Sashimi Grade Tuna

Thanks for the replies! I'm still a little vague on exactly what I should say, however.

Sushi/Sashimi Grade Tuna

What does this term actually MEAN?? I've had a long, somewhat fruitless search of the web.... But I can't come to any type of conclusive definition. I work in a seafood department, but the higher-ups did not educate us on the dynamics of this term. It causes customers to become suspicious of the tuna or bicker among one another. SMH... Anyone have ideas of what to tell these folks?
