Shattuck Avenue Unmentionables- Thai Delight, Da Lian & Oriental Restaurant

Roxie Deli has changed over the years. I lived a block away in the mid-80's. At that time the owner's female relatives made a wide range of middle-eastern and eastern-european dishes fresh each day. They were very good, I especially liked the kibeh, falafel and a spinach/feta knish.

I visited the store about a year ago and it's the same owner but with none of the Middle-Eastern foods they used to serve. I asked him about it and he told me they still made the food for catering orders but he doesn't carry any of it in his store. It's really sad because now the place is just another corner market.

Best Salads in Berkeley

Always ask for the dressing on the side at Intermezzo. With that caveat, you won't find a more generous salad for less money than Intermezzo. Err, parking can be difficult :)

italian restaurants in berkely/oakland area

My family went to Venezia in August '06 and were very disappointed. We had not been in 10+ years but it was not good for what we paid. We won't go back. Riding on its own coattails?

For cheap I would go with Zza's, for good - Bucci's is a good bet but the menu is limited and significantly more expensive than Zza's. Pizzaiola has great pizza but will everybody want pizza?

BEST DESSERTS IN OAKLAND??

I hate lemon bars, except for Betty's which are worth a trip. Several people have told me she does a great lunch sandwich that's either fried chicken or chicken fried steak (either way, not my type of thing, but I've had the good word from independent sources).

Fancy desserts in Berkeley and Oakland

Okay, it's a bakery/pastry shop but Masse's is, IMO, the best in the East Bay.

Masse's

In the same complex with Black Oak Books and Saul's.

Best place in SF/East Bay for Belgian beer?

I haven't been recently, but Khana Peena on Oxford St. in Berkeley used to have a decent selection of bottled Belgian beers - nothing on tap I'm afraid.

Steamed Scrambled Eggs in Berkeley?

I used to frequent Newberry's on Shattuck at Ashby where they steamed scrambled eggs using the milk steamer on an espresso machine. Has anybody seen a local spot that will prepare eggs this way?

Thanks!
