Dahl Puri and Roti

Well if you can get any I'd love some!! I had roti over Christmas, my husband who is from Barbados went there for Christmas and brought four back for me. They were great but still I want more!

That must be really bad!! Maybe if you know someone going to Toronto in the near future you could get them to bring you back some! If I know anyone who is going I'll leave a message here!

Seems like if a west indian restaurant opened here in St. John's it would do pretty darn good. I remember a few years ago I was here and there was a place opened downtown but I guess it didn't survive. I didn't try it since I was living in Toronto at the time and had easy access to all the Dahl Puri, Roti or Buss Up Shot I wanted! What I wouldn't do now to have a feed of it!

West Indian Food in St. John's Nl

I haven't tried it but I have heard this place mostly features African foods and I am afraid it would not resemble the real west indian deal that I am craving so bad. I have tried East Indian roti before and it didn't match up for me.

West Indian Food in St. John's Nl

Anyone know where I can find good Trini/Guyanese food in St. John's? I am craving a good shrimp roti and if I was really lucky a few trini doubles. Or perhaps even somewhere that sells dalpuri and I can attempt to make my own. I definitely don't want to try to make the dalpuri roti myself!!

Back from Trinidad... craving doubles

Drupatis is the best for roti and their doubles are heaven!!! Try them you won't be disappointed but be prepared to line up for them!!

Fine and local dining in and around St. John's, Newfoundland

Anyone remember the Captain's Cabin in Bowrings?! They had amazing chips, dressing and gravy. I too grew up in St. John's but havine been living in Toronto for many years. I remember many nights eating Ches' or Venice at 3 am after a night on the town. Boy am I glad I'm going home in a month!!!

Great Places for Fish and Chips (aka fi' n' chi')

tdeane the well known fish and chip restaurants you are talking about have been around for years in St. John's and what they serve has always been fish and chips never fries. They may not be the type of chips you are acustomed to but they are what most nflders would consider to be chips. As far as frozen fish being served, well of course frozen fish is served when no fresh fish is available. I am sure you have heard the issues with the fishery if you are indeed living in NL. I can say with certainty though that the Big R always served frozen fish and their serving were larger because they were serving frozen fish while the other shops were serving fresh. As for good fish and chips on the mainland.. where??!!!! I've lived on Ontario for many years and have never yet had fresh cod, halibut or haddock anywhere!!!!

Dining suggestions for NL

Being from St. John's myself there are plenty of great places to eat downtown in all price ranges. I would expect no matter where you go you will enjoy your experience because we are known for our hospitality. I know when I went home with my Barbados born husband for the first time, he was treated like a king at Ches'( #1 for fish and chips in my opinion) and it was a very memorial experience for us even 10 years later. I like to think that most of our establishments rate high in customer service.
