Hanukkah Brisket Dinner Menu

While I desperately want to make sufganiyot...the last thing I need is two dozen jelly doughnuts sitting around the house.

No kosher observant guests will be present. Just want to try and use this as a cultural education opportunity for the kids.

Hanukkah Brisket Dinner Menu

Indeed. I just went and checked the recipe in the Bread Bible and sure enough, no butter.

How about a loaf of challah? If there is butter in the bread does that mean its a dairy meal and the meat is out?

Hanukkah Brisket Dinner Menu

Okay, full disclosure here; I'm Catholic.

But, I have a brisket in my freezer and would like to offer a show of solidarity with my Jewish friends over Hanukkah. What are your best braised brisket recipes (links if possible) and what would complete the menu on your family's table?

Lo Mein - something missing

There are people who are so serious about wok hay that they ask to be seated as close as possible to the kitchen so that the food does not have to travel an extra ten feet before they are able to get it.

Left cheese out overnight; unsafe?

Are we talking about the little single serve foil topped plastic ramekins they give you when you buy a bagel or is there an actual block of cream cheese that you can buy?

Left cheese out overnight; unsafe?

Okay, let me rephrase...

There is a cream cheese commercially available that has a Dunkin Donuts label on it?

Is Legal Sea Foods a chain?

It still says "chain" on the restaurant's wiki page but the CEO has changed his back to "group".

At least until I changed it again.

Pressure Cooker for a harried mom who is afraid of pressure cookers

It depends on what it is. I wouldn't leave beans or grains in there for any length of time but I would not think twice about big chunks of stew meat or a roast.

Pressure Cooker for a harried mom who is afraid of pressure cookers

The first couple times I did beans I was looking to make soup so mushy beans wasn't a problem. From there I just figured out that if I wanted whole beans I just had to cook them less. I have not done any grains.

The biggest benefit of this model is that you can put something in the cooker, set the timer, and walk away from it. Once the timer goes off the cooker goes into a holding mode. It will keep your food warm for hours. You could literally put your food in the pressure cooker, set the timer, and leave the house for a few hours with no worries.

Pressure Cooker for a harried mom who is afraid of pressure cookers

I have this model and I love it:

I routinely use my pressure cooker for beans. I have done short ribs several times.

It still takes a bit to come up to temp and release the pressure. I guess the biggest advantage is that you can set it anywhere on the counter; it doesn't take up a burner on the stove.

Two Ingredient pizza dough

I was actually pleasantly stunned at how good this dough is. I expected it to be a biscuity dough but it does have some stretch to it and is bready.

Is it a great pizza crust? No. Is it a passable crust for a weekday pizza night? Absolutely.

Two Ingredient pizza dough

Was the two ingredient pizza dough any good? My wife is making it tonight because her mom is coming for dinner and just won't stop talking about it. Neither my wife nor I are very hopeful.

Can We Think Beyond the Nuclear Family Table?

Why should I have to go to all the effort of getting in my car and driving to a KFC? It's raining outside.

No, it seems far better to indulge my own lazy tendencies and just let my children figure something else out.

Thank you for enlightening me. Perhaps when I get home tonight I'll just say "fuck it" and let my four year old fend for himself.

Beef Bottom Round with Onion Gravy

I was actually surprised at how tender mine was. I guess I pulled it out of the oven right at that perfect moment between tough and dry.

Beef Bottom Round with Onion Gravy

So I bought a beef bottom round roast on sale and wasn't sure how to cook it. I did a little Google search and found a recipe that called for slicing up a ton of onions and making a bed in the bottom of your dutch oven. Add a little vinegar, a bay leaf, and I added some thmye just for good measure. You then set the roast right on top of the onions with no other additions.

The onions and the beef give up so much liquid that it is more than enough for braising. I moved the whole Dutch oven into the oven at 275 and left it there for a couple hours. This was some of the best pot roast I ever had.

Has anybody else ever done a braise like this? Would it work for chuck?
