Is a hot dog a sandwich?

I had a great sandwich at Costco over the weekend. It was an all beef hot dog with deli mustard.

Cuba Libre (Rum and Coke)

You need a recipe for this?

Lent Starts One Week From Today

Catholics fast on Ash Wednesday which is February 18 this year. Then there is no meat on Fridays until Easter. We fast again on Good Friday, the Friday prior to Easter.

Lent Starts One Week From Today

I'm sure every diocese, every bishop, and every parish has a different take on why we eat fish on Fridays.

Lent Starts One Week From Today

The way I learned it was that eating fish was a show of solidarity with the poor. During Jesus's time, only wealthy people could afford to eat meat. You had to either have a lot of land and livestock to kill, or have the money to go and buy meat. Poor people, on the other hand, could drop a line in any lake or stream and catch some fish to eat.

In that case it does seem to be a form of self denial.

Heinz adds Sriracha to Ketchup

It's not sriracha. It's sriracha flavored ketchup.

I've always gotten a kick out of the Catholics who choose to go out and eat lobster on Fridays during Lent. It kind of defeats the purpose of the season.

Lent Starts One Week From Today

For the modern day Catholic it means no meat on Fridays and fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

I'm sure the green and red labeling is very deliberate.

Heinz adds Sriracha to Ketchup

It does not appear that they are using Huy Fong brand sriracha. I did not see a source named for the sriracha in the little reading I did.

Heinz adds Sriracha to Ketchup

The term sriracha predates Huy Fong. Trademarking sriracha would be like trademarking the word mustard or mayonnaise.

Husband Coming from 3 months stay in China; What to cook .

The first day he gets home he will be exhausted from traveling. I would make that a pizza night. After that I would just play it day by day.

I'm sure he is working in China because the pay is good. Make a point to have one nice meal out.

Husband Coming from 3 months stay in China; What to cook .

I used to work overseas with a similar schedule to your husband's. I would work three months, come home for a couple of weeks, and go back for a few months.

It is very sweet of you to try and develop menus that will make him happy. But believe me, he will be happy just to be eating and home. In reality, the food becomes secondary to other needs.

Heinz adds Sriracha to Ketchup

They made a Tabasco ketchup several years back. I prefer to just buy a bottle of regular ketchup and make my own additions per serving.

This trend of locking threads is extremely concerning

Maybe someone would like to hear more about Birdsall writing for Saveur. Maybe someone would like to hear more about some of these other publications that Birdsall is and has been writing for.

Sometimes a simple yes or no question can spark some very informative dialogue. I suspect that you know this is true, otherwise you could spend your life locking threads where a simple yes or no question is answered in the first half dozen responses. But you don't do that so something tells me there is more to the story.

Making a beef stock without bones, just a gigantic hunk of beef?

I make a shredded beef dish from skirt steak that is simmered in water with carrots, onions, and celery. The byproduct of this dish is a wonderfully rich beef broth.

This trend of locking threads is extremely concerning

I started two threads today. Neither of them contained profanity, threatening language, or anything else that could be considered out of line. The first thread was locked within minutes and the second thread was removed almost immediately.

I have been an ardent supporter of Chow/Chowhound in terms of them being able to run their business as they see fit. But, this heavy handed moderation will only drive people away.

Birdsall

Does John Birdsall write for Saveur now? They have an article written by him up on their website right now.

What Was Your Superbowl Beer?

Last year for the Super Bowl I got an 18 pack of Rainier cans and the Seahawks won. Guess what I'm doing this year. Eighteen pack of Rainier cans.

Pyramid is owned by Florida Ice & Farm Co., a Costa Rican company. I think the backing of a large owner gives them access to a more robust distribution network.

The plague of clueless bartenders

I think that the tell tale sign of a bar that takes beer seriously is the glassware. If I walk into a bar and they have several different shapes of glass that can be employed depending on the specific beer you choose then I know that they have a pretty good idea.

The plague of clueless bartenders

When I was bartending, many years ago, we had a guy come out once a week and clean the lines. This was paid for by the beer distributors. It was in their best interest for our draft lines to be clean.
