Dinner in or near Mission Hills?
Although it's been a little while, I've enjoyed L'affair Cafe. as well. Small, quiet, french, neighborhood "gem.". Not fancy but warm and caring. I'd think it work very well for a somber occasion.

My last meal there was perfectly lousy. So was my parents'. We are not surprised. But it used to be a great stand-by....

Most Divisive Restaurants?
Am I the only one who did not LOVE Lawry's The Prime Rib??
I also do happen to love Phillipes, Musso Frank, and Pacific Dining Car (mostly for nostalgic/sentimental reasons) but have been disappointed with Patina...
Et tu?
Best Soup
I know it is not the best soup in L.A. , but I have a soft spot for the tureen of soup at Taix. (Last time I went, the whole tureen comes with the well-priced and tasty, if old fashioned, dinner. That was about 2 years ago.) It's an old L.A. landmark -- a fun step back in time. Amazing wine list too.
Dark and romantic - westside or Hollywood area
Where is La Poubelle? Have heard it's romantic...
Dark and romantic - westside or Hollywood area
La Boheme is fun. Melisse is pricey although it is in Santa Monica -- but is great. Campanille is wonderful and is Charlie Chaplin's old studio. Hollywood Roosevelt is fun and campy and is nearby. I personally like Musso Franks.
Hollywood Pies -- what happened..???
Anyone know what happened to the Chicago style pizza place -- a hidden gem located in the old Acapulco resto on La Cienega? A Chicago-born colleague of mine loved it -- but says it's suddenly gone. Someone made great pizzas -- where did he or she go??

Raphael -- Studio City -- WOW -- have you seen it?
We recently had dinner at Raphels on Ventura Blvd in
Studio City. That restaurant is visually stunning. The owner greeted us and what a sweetie and class act he is! His wife, said he, designed the restaurant and I must say, it was so gorgeous. We had a wonderful experience. The food was good, not cheap at all and I have to say, somewhat pretentious
I generally like simpler food. Celery root in a pot du creme --really? Honestly, you couldn't taste it, but still -- Why??)
The service was attentive and friendly. Again, the owner was great. So nice. He said that they are adding "small plates" to the menu, which sounds smart.
All in all, a lovely evening. A real "date night." Would (will) definitely return!
Anyone else have any thoughts about Raphaels? Worth going to!!

Great Tuna Melt!
Talleyrand in Burbank has shockingly good sandwiches, tuna melts. Yes, it's like stepping into 1959, but it's very popular -- for a reason!!
R23 Sushi-Downtown L.A.?
How sad! I used to love tnat place. I loved how difficult it was to find the place. I loved tne Gehry chairs. And the food was very good then -- and presented so beautifully. Is it really lousy now? I always wanted to take my son there... Guess i blew it.... :(
Rec in NoHo near El Portal Theatre?
I've heard good things about "Maximillians" in No. Hollywood from this site. Haven't been --but it seems llike it would be good for a cold or semi-cold night. I believe it is Swiss / German.... It is near the No Ho. Metro station (lankershim)which is near the restarant. Honestly, people love it --- and NO, I don' t work there!!!
Pumpkin Ravioli? Where's your favorite served up at?
My daughter and my mother both loved the pumpkin ravioli at Campanile last week. Me, I'm not a fan of the The Great Pumpkin, but enjoyed talking with the very friendly Mark Peel about his Top Chef adventures. (And it was doubly exciting for the out-of-towner, small-town dweller at our table! They watch a lot of Bravo in those teeny towns that dot America!!)
Iso restaurant for Thanksgiving "HELP"
Thanks everyone for the ideas! Since we are unable to do dishes easily either (ailing parents), any ideas on anywhere more upscale? Of course, I'll look at Open Table (great idea) but my parents are Patina/Campanile/Illiterati people... Is this an impossible dream..?!
Iso restaurant for Thanksgiving "HELP"
Our family is unable to cook Thanksgiving dinner for various reasons. Does anyone know a restaurant that does a good Thanksgiving dinner? Price is not issue. Live in the valley, but will definitely drive over the hill, Pasadena, etc. Thank you so much for your help!
where to get decent steak without breaking the bank?
I will second that emotion --Taylor's is the place. Koreatown or La Canada -- they look exactly alike (well, on the inside!!) Get a culotte steak and a Molly salad and you're set. It's a great bargain and an all-'round nice (friendly) place. It is a throwback in time, so don't expect a modern decor. It's red leather (vinyl?!) booths, dark lighting and servers who call you Sweet Pea. You'll swear you saw Jesse Unruh in the corner. I love the place..!
Restaurant to impress an eighteen year old?
When my son was a teenager, for a VERY special occasion, I took him to Crustacean. Why? For his great love of expensive Asian cuisine? Heck no! So that he can walk on top of fish! They have that glass walkway, with an aquarium/fish pond underneath. He also marveled at the Ahn's "special secret menu." I have to say, it was memorable and fun. We drove home over one of the canyons and I showed him where Sharon Tate once lived. (The house is gone, but the street is obviously still there.) Okay,so that's a little sick, but at least I didn't take him to Lucy's El Adobe where they say Sharon Tate had her last meal! My kids are also avid sushi eaters and R24 and Katsuya impress them as well.

MISTRAL SHERMAN OAKS......
Just went to Mistral a few weeks ago. First time in a while. Still a beautiful restaurant; kind of San Francisco-ish. Dark wood, elegant. Daughter had the branzino, which she loved. I honestly can't remember what I had (ouch). We shared the chocolate souffle. May sound trite, I suppose, but the souffle was oh-so-delicious. Only complaints are they seemed to rush us out (turnover, turnover, turnover) and they did not acknowledge my daughter's birthday as I had discreetly requested. I'd return and hopefully have a leisurely meal!
BEST seafood/fresh lobster in LA - where?
A very close friend of ours is graduating college -- um, let's just say later in life than 22. (Much!) She's done it all while working a VERY intense full time job and we're so proud. Sadly she can't attend the graduation ceremony in Boston (due to her overwhelming job and business trips) but longs for the seafood of the area. She mentioned lobster (although I think of lobster as a Maine thing, but it's the thought that counts -- and it's HER well-deserved graduation!).
So we want to take her out for the BEST fresh (flown in daily??) lobster. My personal favorite "fish" restaurant is Providence, hands down. I've also had a good meal at The Water Grill (previous chef, though)... but are they the best for fresh lobster?
I'd LOVE any suggestions. Since I mentioned Providence, you can assume money is (proverbially) is no object (heck, it's only once!!) We want it to be very special!
Thanks everyone!

At Last Cafe in Long Beach
Isn't this the place featured on Diners, Dives and Dumps, or whatever it's called...? (I actually have enjoyed the show. 3D.)
Parkway Grill in Pasadena.....
Yeah, they really charged us for the bread! We were furious and my colleague went to the ladies' room and took a handful of tampons (which they 'gave" for free) just to show them! (Sorry to be crude but it cracked me up. And she didn't need them -- over 50!) But I still have a soft spot for the Parkway Grill...!

Parkway Grill in Pasadena.....
I still like The Parkway Grill. It an old stand-by, and it's pretty, gracious, classy, and has good food. NOT what i'd call a value, though. Last time we went, they charged us for what we thought was the free bread on the table! Maybe it's just my misty water-colored mem'ries, but I still like it!

ISO GREAT canneloni - LA
REALLY? There is no good canneloni in all of L.A...? I am sure your are right, maudie, that homemade is best and I do love to cook -- but that would be way beyond my talent or patience. Anyone? Any good canneloni in L.A...??
ISO GREAT canneloni - LA
My co-worker has always loved Marino's Restaurant (on Melrose, right near Providence)-- and specifically their canneloni. We just went for her birthday and -- eeks -- they no longer serve canneloni. We work in LA, near a lot of great eating areas (downtown, 3rd St, Hancock Park and adjacent areas, mid Wilshire.... even Los Feliz!) Anyone LOVE any restaurant's cnneloni???? (No Olive Garden or louise's, plese!!) Please help -- she's a beloved co-worker!
Thank you!!!
Marino Italian Restaurant. Any opinions?
Hi -
Marino's is an interesting place. It is one of my employee's all-time favorite restaurants so I've been there a lot. (For lunch.) I will say I enjoy it, but I will also say it is not someplace I'd go to (or choose) on my own .
Let me expalin: It's got a long menu, which I always find scary. (How could anyone do that many things well?) Gordon Ramsay would have a field day there. It's old fashioned in looks and more. Not really pretty. Definitely needs a facelift. It is very close to Providence and a real foodie would glance "thataways" and long for Providence. (There's no comparison.)
BUT I like it. Funny, huh? The people [I think I'm seeing the owner(s) or at least someone who certainly acts like one --in a very good way] are VERY nice. Very attentive (but not irritating) and gracious. My co-worker loves the canneloni so we always have that and I must say I like it. I like the warmth, kindness, the old fashioned-ness, the food even, and I havta say, we can always get a table. (I've found that a little sad, but then again I've only gone for lunch.)
Last time we were there, Dr. Phil was there with his son. To my surprise they were very friendly (Dr Phil and son, I mean). Bizarre Woody Allen movie-like experience. (Think Marshall McLuhan in Annie Hall, but friendly.)
A caveat (as if it's my first) -- t'aint cheap!!!! Lunch even sets us back. I'd NEVER callit a value.
And that's my opinion! I'd be curious what others think.
Where can I buy garlic chives and/or pea-sized mozzerella?
Just got pea sized mozzarella balls at gelsons
Amazing food and price..also $2 corkage
Just wanted to add my two cents on Bistro Provence -- I love it too!! "Hidden gem" is truly the term. It is small, cozy, friendly and it feels like France to me, hold the attitude and smoking. Been there dozens of times (or so!) and even went right after seeing the Julie/Julia movie -- me and about 20 others all ordering the Boef (sp? beef!) Bourgionone (sp?!) I felt like something of an idiot being so "typical", but it was very good. They have good lamb too as well as garlic roasted chicken and more. Highly recommend for a sweet neighborhood charmer.
