Late Dinner near Lord Elgin Hotel Ottawa?

Thank you again operadiva for the helpful tips. I too wish the tulip website were more specific. I'll be back if I think of anything else!

Late Dinner near Lord Elgin Hotel Ottawa?

What an absolutely wonderful and helpful post! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your expertise. We are coming in for the concert at the NAC "Do You Hear the People Sing" and look forward to seeing Ottawa for the first time. I haven't been able to find a website that lists the best places to see the tulips, so in addition to your restaurant advice, you have helped me in that area as well. One question: The Byward Market - I'm wondering how far a "hop-skip-and-a-jump" is. I can't walk too far because of foot surgery. But we will have a car. Is it difficult to find parking at some of these recommendations?

Late Dinner near Lord Elgin Hotel Ottawa?

We are flying in and will be looking for a place to have dinner between 8:00-9:00pm during the Tulip Festival. We will be checking in at the Lord Elgin. Reviews of the restaurant at the hotel haven't been stellar. Where would you recommend? We will have a car, but don't want to drive too far.

Hello, I'm Your Annoying Server

What's worse is when waitstaff thirty years younger than you says "Hi Guys!" or at the end of the meal, "are you still working on that?" But the most annoying thing of all is when they constantly interrupt your conversation every ten minutes to ask if everything is OK.

Looking for a quiet, not too expensive restaurant close to Walnut Street Theater

On second thought - just went to the Moriarty's website - it doesn't look like the kind of place I'm looking for. Never mind.

The photos look pretty! Not too far from the theater. I'm not sure if everyone would like Indian food - I LOVE it! I'll do some checking - thanks! The lady I got my tickets from over the phone at the theater recommended Moriarty's. She says she goes there all the time. Any thoughts on that?

Checked out Garces and La Viola, but so far Marathon is still looking good to me in terms of proximity to the theater and an eclectic menu to appeal to everyone. They seem willing to work with me in terms of a private corner upstairs for our group. But I still have time to change my mind, if need be.

I thank everyone for their suggestions so far. So far, barryg's suggestion of Marathon seems to fit the bill. It's less than a block from the theater, there is a variety of food to appeal to different tastes, is not too expensive and they seem to be able to accomodate our group (I called and talked to them today). I don't know how quiet it is. I don't have to make a decision right away so I will continue to check out all the places mentioned. I will reiterate that distance from the theater is key.

Reviews of La Scalas Restaurant on Walnut Street in Philadelphia?

I'm leaning toward this restaurant close to the Walnut Street Theater for a small gathering, but don't live in Philly. If you could recommend it, please let me know.

I'm hosting a dinner for one of the actors at the theater which is located at 825 Walnut Street. He needs to be close so he can run over and get ready before the performance. We could have 10-12 guests with a variety of tastes. I'm more interested in a quiet, private atmosphere with good service than gourmet food, although good, reasonable food would be a plus. A friend who lives in the area has suggested the following. Your comments would be appreciated!

Portofino Italian @13th and Walnut

Marathon Grill 8th and Walnut

Midtown Diner 11th and Sansom

Joe Pesce Italian between 11th and 12th on Walnut

Jones 7th and Chestnut

La Scala Italian @ 7trh and Chestnut

I'd like to try it, thanks! Alas, their website is not yet running.

Looking for an elegant jazzy supperclub in the lower Michigan area

Thank you xman! That sound like exactly the kind of place I might be looking for!

Does this exist anymore? I'm thinking dressy, elegant surroundings, sultry jazz singer, drinks, perhaps food, but not necessary. Hubby saw it in a movie ("An Education" set in England) and said, "I want to go to a place like that". Ha! How can I not try to fulfil his wishes? We live in the Detroit metro area, but aren't afraid to drive a distance.

St. Louis Trip Report

Thank Katie, hill food and nosh. The zoo opens at 8am and since we are at the Chase, shouldn't be hard to get there when it opens.

St. Louis Trip Report

Katie, I read your report with interest. We will be there next week! What did you think of the zoo? Worth going? We are staying in Forest Park and will be close.

Dining choices in Central West End St. Louis

Taking lrstl's comments seriously about it being difficult to have a nice dinner before the theater, what about after theater options in the area?

Dining choices in Central West End St. Louis

That's valuable information lrstl, esp to us women! The kind of stuff only insiders can clue you in on. I'll remember you at intermission :-)

I love the setting, Doug, and the proximity to the theater. Not sure about the menu, but perhaps it will be an option for us on one of the nights. Thanks for the suggestion.

That's going on my agenda for sure.

Hill, yes he's the reason we're coming down to St.L in the first place. (Eric Kunze in Miss Saigon). I'm happy to be discovering the area. It sounds like it's going to be great fun. The last time, 20 years ago, we just blew through for a day on our way out west. We were able to get a great rate through him at the Chase. Looks like a great hotel - I will ask at the desk about a shuttle. It doesn't mention it on the website.

lrstl, showtime is at 8:15, so we would probably do an early dinner, about 5:30 or so. But if there is pre-show entertainment I might be enticed to come early. I like to dress nicer for the theater (summery dress, strappy sandals), even if it is outdoors, so I can't see myself lugging snacks and drinks along. Straub's looks amazing. Looking forward to checking that out.

thanks, rllevy - making notes here.

Actually, we are going to the show (Miss Saigon) all three nights (a friend is headlining) so we are somewhat limited in how much we'll be able to see outside of our immediate area. But thanks for the recommendation of bug spray. I'll make sure I have some with me. I guess we could take a cab to the theater from the Muny and have him pick us up later. We'll try it one night and see how it goes. I'm a walker, my husband not so much. We can check out the downtown areas during the day perhaps. Thanks for the reply!

Thanks, Cheesemongerswife. Chez Leon and Northwest CR have been added to my list for sure, as well as Straub's! What an amazing selection to choose from so far.

Oooh, those all sound sublime - especially the bottle of champagne, lol. I have bookmarked them all - thanks a lot!

Thanks for the tip on Kopperman's. That will be a great help, since we have a kitchen in our suite and will most certainly want to stock it with goodies. LOL, is your advice on the full STL experience a little trip through memory lane???

Dining choices in Central West End St. Louis

Hi! We will be attending the Muny for Miss Saigon three evenings while in St. Louis and are staying at the Chase Park Plaza. This is our first visit to St. Louis and need some experienced opinions on where to dine within walking distance of our hotel. I have bookmarked Atlas, which I read about here. I like light, fresh, innovative cuisine. Possibly al fresco, if it's not too hot and on the quiet side so we can talk. Any suggestions for me?
