Is there cheap, good food on the Upper East Side (70s-50s)?

Hi all,
My Chowhound-pal and I will be urban-hiking on the Upper East Side this weekend (around the 70s-50s). We're convinced there's cheap good food to be found, but where?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

SP

hell's kitchen/midtown west/times square: good pizza? good ice cream? good produce?

Hell's Kitchen - my "home away from home" because good Chowhound friends live right there. Some suggestions:

Try Claudio's Pizza at the corner of 42 (?) and 9th; good basic pizza with oddball toppings like ziti.

The Chelsea Grill at 675 9th Ave has good-quality ingredients for basic food, and their own homemade potato chips.

For produce, there is supposed to be a greenmarket newly opened in Hell's Kitchen, but I don't have any info on this.

And not too far from this neighborhood on 44th between Broadway and 8th is Times Square Bagels (not on your list but they're so divine I had to mention them), real honest baked and boiled bagels.

Yum.

Recommended chow near SUNY Downstate/East Flatbush?

Hi all,
I may be getting a job at SUNY Downstate. Of course good food nearby is a big factor in my decision. (Only half-kidding.) Any suggestions? If you live/work near SUNY-D, where do you eat?

Thanks,
Pinwheel
