New breakfast place in Georgetown, ct

Walked to what used to be swirls with hubby early saturday morning to check out new place for breakfast. So good. Usual offerings but bagels were so delish and even the wrap was warm and soft. Steady stream of customers so hoping for longevity in an area that sees way too much turnover. Spinelli bagels are terrific and so glad I can get them again. Did I mention the home made soft glazed donut? Double yum! Get out and show your support for this father-son operated place.

pepe's "sorry no clams" question

Went to Fairfield Pepe's last night to celebrate New Years Eve birthday and we had a great clam pie as always. Did get there at 4pm and got seated immediately so hope those who arrived later in the evening had clams for their pies! Yum!

Jani in Norwalk bites the dust!

Although nothing special discovered tonight that the bright neon lights of Jani in the Wal-Mart plaza are dark. Sign on the door indicates they are closed. No one picks up the phone. Huge space to be empty. Anyone aware of the future of the space?

East Cafe, Georgetown, Connecticut - really renovating? or closed for good??

Ok hungrykids you are on...lets agree to meet at whatever new restaurant moves into the space! I'm sure once one of sees any action there we'll post on this board. Looking into the glass of the old "East" it appears to be completely stripped of everything. Even the flooring has been ripped up. Did you notice that the place by the old Soup Alley reopened under an Asian Fusion place? I don't think that the China Ten place ever caught on. Probably same menu and all just a different name.

Not at all surprised. I had read in Fairfield County Business Journal that Caraluzzi's had plans to significantly expand their store into adjacent spaces and also do a new parking lot rerouting some of the flow and improving the overall design of the traffic pattern which can be awkward. Not sure what would have to happen to the cleaners which sits in between but time will tell. As far as Chinese takeout, we continue to scrounge and pick it up from other places here and there. Never did give "East" another try. Did you notice the work being done on the orange building up the street just before Rt. 102? Maybe another restaurant opening there? Anyone know about that?

Went grocery shopping last night next door to see East Cafe's sign a blazin'. Must have cleaned up the offenses pretty fast. What do you make of that? Couldn't see if anyone inside there and certainly did not go in!

Yikes!!! Out of desperation I ordered chicken lo mein the other night for DD. It was the most bizarre lo mein ever. Super dark in color (too much soy sauce) and overloaded w/ sesame oil. She hardly touched it. The new menu was available for taking but I guess I won't be using it. It's a blessing really that they are shut down. Something just wasn't right about the place and the new owners. Thanks for the update.

Such a shame. Was our go to place since it is so close to home . Haven't tried them again since the disaster from a couple of Saturdays ago. Haven't seen the lady who used to be behind the register jogging on my street either. Something tells me that they must have moved away or something. Thanks for your input though...were else do you go around here for chinese/thai?

Aaaaaargh! What a disappointment, So we go to call in our order and no one picks up the phone after about 10 rings. Since it is so close we decided to go in person, place our order and then do some grocery shopping next door. The atmosphere was total chaos. None of the same people there and everyone looked pretty disgruntled. The man at the register just let the phone ring and ring while he tried to check out a few people. I was still waiting to place my order when a woman came in with her food she had just picked up for take out. She was returning it for a refund! She whispered to me not to order (that wasn't you hungry kids was it?) None of the few tables that were filled had food on them and the owner was trying to convince this other customer to wait while he corrected his takeout order. I cut my losses and left. We went to Marcus Dairy and then went to the mall. I haven't seen my neighbor since this all happened. Maybe it was someone else's turn in the family to take over. At this rate, it won't be there long.

Agreed. Did take out from Ten a few times since it is on my way home from work and kids not impressed. Daughter can live on chicken fried rice and thought it was way too gummy from there. Son thought the spice on the chicken and broccoli tasted off. So Saturday night it is at East Cafe.

We ordered very often as well. It's pretty bad when you don't have to identify yourself by your phone number and they know you anyway! Our order was pretty similar from week to week so she would always know when I had company when I ordered things other than the regular selection. Wonder if it has anything to do with that new Chinese restaurant opening by Fatima? We got a menu from them and it is almost identical to East Cafe. Will let you know when I see the owner.

The owners are neighbors of ours and jog past our house often. We go there all the time, at least once a week, and I haven't heard a thing. I will try to ask the lady who usually is seen behind the register when I see her. Last week when we went she did say that her credit card machine was down and that they were only taking cash...maybe that was a sign??? It would be a loss to the neighborhood that's for sure.

Ridgefield, CT: Auntie G's Deli, Bakery, Barbeque

On my way back from Brewster, I stopped to get a brisket sandwich for my hubby who was home with a bad cold. The folks behind the counter were very attentive and before I could even ask for a sample or two perfect sampling portions of pulled pork and the brisket were thrust into my hands. I was lucky enough to score a knish as well. Once home hubby and I shared the brisket sandwich, knish, corn bread, cole slaw and pickle and we really enjoyed it. I'll be back to try the pastrami (one of our favorites). By the way, I told the owners about this thread and Chowhound. They did not know about it but they seemed anxious to read up on the reviews. I wish them good luck on their venture. It gives us another take out option besides chinese or italian.

John's Best opening in Ridgefield

I see the signs are up at John's Best in Ridgefield. Anyone have an idea when they are due to open? From the signs, it looks to be more like the Westport location instead of the Norwalk location on RTE 123. That would be a little disappointing since I really think that Norwalk one is superior.

Another new restaurant for Wilton/Ridgefield

Finally made it to the "Pub" after starting this thread a few weeks ago. I continue to marvel at the amount of cars in the lot every night. We went around 7:30pm Saturday and waited about 40 min. for a table. Man, it was noisy! Anyway, once seated we dove into nachos (very, very good), calamari (yummy especially the garlic aoli dipping sauce), burgers for the teenage son, fish and chips for hubby and me. We were very pleased and thought everything was great. It's impossible to hold a conversation there but I guess you can always talk on the ride home! I am tickled that it is doing well in this economy. Kind of gives you hope!

Another new restaurant for Wilton/Ridgefield

I haven't been there myself but just like hungrykids I pass it all the time on my way home and it is always packed! We went and got some ice cream the other night at Ridgefield Ice Cream (the place that looks like a Carvel stand) and on our way we saw gazillion cars and people at the Pub. It was a weekday night! Very encouraging...
I will make it a point to try it now that I know some of their offerings. We have been frequenting the Eveready Diner in Brewster quite a bit. It's Exit 19 off of I84 in NY. It's actually the same travel time for us to go there vs. Orem's which is right in town! Anyway, food has been very good and desserts are highly recommended.
Thanks for the info on the Pub!

weston, CT

Actually it is known as the Olive Market in case you are trying to search it out. Seating is limited but we have enjoyed the tapas and the vibe.

Coco Bongo's in Ridgefield closed

I knew it was bound to happen. No cars in the parking lot and then eerily quiet on a Friday night. Now I see that a Mexican place has opened at the same location. I'm thinking same owners since there never seemed to be a property transfer sign out front. If anyone goes, let us know how it is. Also anyone try the new place that took over The Catch location up the road?

GREAT sandwiches FFD not Boar's Head homemade

I like Ancona's better for sandwiches. They offer in house roasted meats and I think the overall quality and taste is better than Caraluzzi's. Be careful of the complimentary side salads...potato and macaroni...they haven't always tasted fresh to me. Still a preference over Caraluzzi's though. While your there definitely try there fried chicken. So yummy and they will make it fresh for you if you need a lot for a party or something. It always gets rave reviews from our crowd. One more thing...their tuna salad is just perfect for me. Much more flavorful than Caraluzzi's when I am too lazy to open my own can!

Another new restaurant for Wilton/Ridgefield

Always keeping my eyes open as I traverse Rt. 7 a million times a day and I saw a little sign on the corner of Rt 102 and Rt. 7 saying that "The Little Pub" was moving into the recently painted "liitle" building that used to house antiques. It always looked like a Swiss chalet to me and now I guess someone is going to try making a food/drink place there. Anyone know more about it?

Anybody try Ritz Asia in Ridgefield yet?

Just had to go by there and the grand opening is 5/16/09, Saturday. If anyone goes post a review on this thread.

Hot Dogs in FFD County

You are right about the finite amount of places in this area. So far, Dexter's has not opened for the season as far as I can tell. It is still boarded up and being used as a turn around for the cars to get back on RT. 7. I have to say taking a left out of Dexter's to get back to G'town is a nightmare. Have seen a few crashes there! Be careful if you go! Have you ever had the hot dogs at T's Deli? Anyone?

Hot Dogs in FFD County

I agree about Hamburger Patty's...Dexter's much better. By the way, I also practically live next door to HP. Maybe we know each other??? You have replied to my posts so I think we frequent a lot of the same places. Just curious...

good chow close to the ridgefield playhouse??

Just had a nice meal at Fifty Coins on Main St. last night. Not fancy food but the four of us enjoyed our meals. Service was fast and although the crowd was light (it was a Monday) everyone seemed like they were having a good time. We've also been to Bailey's Backyard. Good for lunch but my dinners there have been so-so. Hope this helps.

It looks like this new restaurant may be open for business. I passed by this weekend and it was all lit up. It's in the place where Biksbee's failed. Anyone been there?

Desperate for good chinese !

Where is Shanghai Cafe in Wilton?

The Catch, Ridgefield, CT closed?

Passed this restaurant on my way home Saturday and all was dark. Had a sinking feeling that it was closed. Just tried to call their number and it has been disconnected. Have had some good meals there but I guess they just couldn't hang in there. Anybody know what will become of the space? Very discouraging!

What is your favorite spaghetti sauce ina jar?

I'm always trying new jarred sauces looking for a flavor that I remember from my childhood. The sauce is on the spicy side and has a meaty flavor (but no meat in the sauce). I haven't been able to recreate this memorable flavor making homemade sauce and don't mind buying jarred sauce from the store. Do you have a favorite jarred sauce that doesn't cost $8.00 a jar?
