New York-style pizza in the south metro?

The Grand Ole Creamery Pizzeria in St Paul on Grand. Really worth the trip.

Look out, folks! Guy & Rachael are teaming up for a new FN show!

I guess they are the 21st century Jacques and Julia. Ugh.

Twin Cities best onion rings?

Hands down, Leo's in Stillwater.

Guy Fieri's Live Food Roadshow - Anyone been?

I am curious about the idea of a large scale cooking/road show. If you've gone, what was it like? Was it worth the money? I understand Paula Deen has one of these also. Have you been to her show, and again, what was it like?

Bottled Thousand Island Dressing Survey

Totally Kens, and as ice cold as possible. Somehow it just makes it taste better to me.

"Only in Canada" food items: add to the list

My grandparents lived in Canada (and we lived in Buffalo), and I loved MacIntosh Toffee, C+ Soda (I loved the cans with the two circles you pushed in) and Tim Horton's before it hit the States (gram always bought us a box of Tim Bits). One more thought: truly delicious gravy fries. Oh, Canada!

What was your favourite childhood concoction, which you now think is disgusting?

Fried, sliced bologna piled on bagel halves fried in butter and topped liberally with ketchup. Yum!

What hot dog brand is best?

Sahlen's and Hebrew National when I can't get Sahlen's.

New York pizza?

The pizza place in St Paul on Grand that is part of Grand Ole creamery.

New York pizza?

Trust me. Grand Pizza, the pizzeria inside The Creamery. They deliver pizza and ice cream. So, yeah.

Whose job do you want on any TV cooking show?

Researcher for Alton Brown and maker of props for Good Eats.

"Frog" Pastry

I've seen them at PJ Murphy's in St Paul. Maybe call and special order?

Craving New York Food

Ok, so not exactly NYC, but Mesa has a Ted's Hot Dogs, which is a specialty in Buffalo, NY (where I am from originally). Really, really good.

What metro area liquor store has the best liquor section?

Blue Max in Burnsville. Worth the drive...huge selection and knowledgeable staff.

olive oil tasting in MSP

Stillwater Olive Oil is a fun place to browse and if I recall, all the varieties have tasters. I love the butter flavored olive oil.

Jamie Kennedy to receive Order of Canada

Great role model for adults and kids.

Gumpy's Roseville, $2 Surly beer on Mondays but food?

Found one really good thing: tex mex rolls. They are chicken with cheese and spices stuffed into a tortilla and fried, topped with bbq sauce. They are served with a ton of tortilla chips. Really, really good. I wanted to believe in their nachos, but was disappointed.

MOA

Ditto the last poster, except I's swap one and two. Twin City Grill does some decent food, and I like the onion bread they serve and their bbq chicken sandwich is really good.

What Recipes Are You Tired Of Seeing In Cooking Magazines?

"signature" drinks and anything with pomegranate.

$18/week

Definitely get flour...use it to make your own bread (I like focaccia), pasta and tortillas. Cooking from scratch can make this challenge a real pleasure. I'd also get potatoes, and make gnocchi with leftovers. I would get a small amount of parmesan cheese. Frittata is a great lunch for work, and almost any leftovers can be added. Don't forget about treats...rice pudding and bread pudding are relatively cheap and yummy.

Podcasts for Kids about Food

I am looking for podcasts/radio programs specifically for kids about food. Do you know of any to share? Thanks.

MSP: Poutine

Looking for recs for poutine...have had Forepaugh's and Burger Jones. Any other places you know of? Thanks.

StP: Need ideas for a "Great Gathering"

We are part of a school community that has a "Great Gatherings" event rather than an auction. Basically, families sponsor an event (like a mother-daughter tea party, wine tasting, game night) and others pay to attend that event. We want to do something for adults (no kids--we are doing a different event for kids) that won't break the bank for us, but will be polished, thoughtful and well-regarded. Any ideas for a place that does tastings, classes, etc. that is different or a bit "behind the scenes." We are sure that we don't want to do classes at Cook's of Crocus Hill (did that before)...any ideas you wonderfully creative people? It would probably help to tell you that we will spend up to $500 for an event that needs to accomodate 12 people (at least).

Specific random question: has anyone ever done Pedal-Pubs? Fun?

Thanks!!!!!

St. Paul: Luci? Luci Ancora?

Lived here two years and have been curious about the Italian restaurants at Randolph and Cleveland. One looks a bit schmancy and the other one looks like a hole in the wall. I heard that they were owned by the same people but had different menus/price points. I went to the website: http://www.ristoranteluci.com/, and it wasn't terribly clear. Can anybody shed any light on these places for me? What makes them different? Which is better? Thanks!!!

MSP: Beef Wellington?

Yes, we went to Forepaugh's over the weekend. He was underwhelmed. The meat was very overdone. I'm already on to the next project of making it myself. The restaurant itself was a nice setting, and we both enjoyed our salads (blt wedge), which were quite tasty. I don't think I'd go back there for the schmancier service, but hit the bistro part instead.

What fun!

Here's a bit of my $.02....if you have a chance to walk around the St. Paul farmer's market (on Sat and Sun am), it's well worth it.

Breakfast: Mickey's Diner in downtown. It's an icon and nearby to museums and a walkable downtown....now, if you go to Mickey's, you'll be right around the corner from Candyland, an awesome candy store that sells the most out of this world popcorn.

If you have a chance, pop in to Cossetta's, an Italian "cafeteria" and shop.

If you are driving from Iowa, why not throw a cooler in your car and fill it with treasures from MSP...I could see you load up the cooler with stuff from Cossetta's (I happen to love their pizza dough), and on Grand Avenue in St P, there are lots of great shops, but particularly The Golden Fig, which sells all sorts of locally made treats.

If you will be in town during the State Fair, by all means go!!!!

If you are looking for a bit of an adventure, less than 30 minutes from St P is Stillwater, with a cool vineyard that is worth checking out (I'd buy lunch at Cosetta's, then drive to Stillwater, eat it on the St. Croix and check out the vineyard on the way back into the cities.

Deli - there is a place in St Paul called Cecil's, which is not so bad when I get a hankering for east coast foods.

MSP: Beef Wellington?

Looking for a place in MSP that serves Beef Wellington. My husband has requested it for his birthday, so we are looking for a sumptuous birthday dinner. Thanks!

Reception advice needed for a large Minneapolis wedding

Went to a great weeding at Mendakota Country Club...beautiful inside and out. Fun bride and groom had reception on July 4th. Really good food, plus touches of whimsy like hot fudge sundaes and pie passed by waiters for dessert.

Julia Child

Oh, yes. I particularly love Baking with Julia and dvr'd episodes for over a year waiting for the two Martha Stewart episodes. Usually Julia disarms her guests with questions, but Martha Stewart is so well prepared that she anticipates all Julia's questions. Cooking television gold.

Chicago Style Subs?

Try Nelson's Cheese and Sandwich Shop in St. Paul (on Como)...just be really clear and directive about the way you want your sandwich. I miss Jersey style subs and learned to approximate my own--check out Tyler's Ultimate sandwich episode...he shows how to add oil, season and add onion. Following his model is the closest I've come to getting that specific taste.
