Eater's 38 essential LA restaurants. Thoughts?

I like to send visitors to Border Grill in SM for food and margaritas. Usually fits the bill for good food that says "LA".

BBQ Ribs?

I can't believe Philip's hasn't been recommended! GREAT ribs. Outdoors only...or To Go. Best black BBQ in LA. Southern Greens are a must.

Two locations: Liemert Park and So. Central. Crenshaw south of Adams is the easiest one to find.

Pre-TubaChristmas Dinner in Glendale

Tuba Christmas is this Sunday at the Alex Theater in Glendale...and I'm planning a pre-show dinner nearby for a group of 10-12 teachers. I would prefer a Mom&Pop to the chain places...and I trust the recs you people give. Some desires, not in any particular order:
- Casual
- Good quality to cost ratio
- Can handle a racious crowd!
All and any suggestions would be appriciated!

Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita

The Arroyo Chop House shares the parking lot with Parkway...her sister restaurant.

Prime beef, dry-aged and cut on the premisis. Great steak...good bar.

where to go in Monrovia for dinner?

FYI - Wang's is about to open it's doors at their new location...around the corner from their old place on Lemon just east of Myrtle.

Cheap Eats in LA?

It looks like you're on the Westside... too bad!

Duarte in the SGV has a great sushi rest on the cheap! The owner is a LA Sushi Academy instructor.

Sushi-Ya on Huntington... tough to beat the prices... All-You-Can-Eat for $25! Handmade to order... no production line.

OK steak better than Sizzler, cheaper than Cut, Maestro

Chill Fan... Miffy introduced the chains.

And don't recommend Norm's...Baaaaaad.

Sorry... stuck in Suburbia. But your not missing anything in Applebees, Claim Jumper (I think that's what you were referring to), or Red Lobster.

I'll second Taylor's... but if your looking for the best-beef-for-the-buck, it's hard to beat -gulp- Outback.
Decent Filet... under $25 with sides.

Thoughtful Wine List.... Impressive Prices?

Is there such a thing? OK Hounds, give me your best deals on restaurant pours. And, to really make it tough, try to make a pull from the SGV!

How is Eat on Sunset?

Just had dinner there on Sat... My baby had the Steak Diane (overcooked) and I had the Fish special (Spanish Turbot).

Service was immaculate... and the food tasted great.

The problem with Eat. is the portions... tiny. My fish was half the size of a deck of cards... and was served with 4 fingerlings potatoes, 6 lima lima beans and 2 sliced, sauted mushrooms... that's it! $42 for my plate!

Better for drinks than for dinner IMO.

Tonny's - Pasadena

Do they have a bar? How are their margaritas?

Brents Deli in Westlake Village

I haven't been to the one in WV... but the original Brent's is THE best deli in the LA area! I've never been disappointed.

Sorry you had a bad experience (I don't work there... but with all my recommendations, I feel SOME culpability!).

Best Tequilla Not Available Outside Mexico

Casa Noble, as mentioned above, is very good... but a bit peppery on the finish... like cracked black pepper.

My personal favorite is Las Trancas... but you can only find it in Baja Norte (TJ, Rosorito, Ensenada, etc). It should cost you about $30.

Salud!

What makes LA a foodie city? Tell Me

Pastrami.... that's a topic know!

I've always been partial to Johnny's (-ie's?) in Culver City.

The Hat in San Gabriel is a close 2nd.

99 Ranch

I have a lobster boil every year for Mother's Day... and I get my shellfish from our 99 Ranch market in Arcadia. They are cheap and fresh!

The markets will differ.

Favorite tableside (and free) condiment?

Salsa could have it's own thread... but I have to give La Tolteca in Azusa their just due. THE SALSA YOU'LL DRIVE AN HOUR FOR! And yes, they'll sell you a 1/2 gallon with chips to go with it!

One day and night in LA for Boston hound

The Griddle Cafe for breakfast is a must! GREAT cakes and decent coffee.

Farmer's Market is a orgy of food! Lots of choices... but I prefer Cuban sandwiches at Versailles. Get a side of fried plantains.

If you're still hungry for dinner... eat late at Roscoe's. It's a Hollywood tradition... order the chicken and waffles and don't be shy about pouring syrup over the whole plate. Nobody will laugh.

All places are 10 minutes or less from Hollywood/Highland.

BEER!

If you are by Santa Anita racetrack, you may want to give Matt Denny's a try. A small pub with good eats and a fine tap that rotates selections often. They also host a golf tournament in June that is well attended and finishes... as all tournaments should... at the ale house!
