Peking Duck Buns

So darn good. Thank you, Kathryn!

Peking Duck Buns

Does anybody know where I can pick up those steamed buns that you get with Peking duck? In David Chang's Momofuku cookbook (in talking about these buns he serves with the pork belly), he mentions you can generally pick them up in bakeries in Chinatown. Thanks.

BEST JAPANESE IN NEW YORK-VARIOUS STYLES

>> I'm not sure this would all come up in wiki or google articles. I'm just conveying the implied nuance.

Which is why I love CH. Thanks for all the info, Silverjay.

BEST JAPANESE IN NEW YORK-VARIOUS STYLES

Thanks everyone for the clarifications. I wikipedia'ed some of these terms as well, but as Silverjay said, it's not always correct. I've been to Kajitsu, so I have an idea of kaiseki. Also, I've been to Raku in Las Vegas, a popular robatayaki place, especially with chefs, but there's no real pointing of foods.

This article (linked by Vegas food critic, John Curtas) calls robatayaki the grilling of skewers over charcoal. So I got confused between that and yakitori. That's why I asked for the definitions/nuances.

I thoroughly enjoy Japanese cuisine. Could someone briefly explain the nuances of the cuisine types listed? Like "Kyoto style" was explained by Silverjay.

Cuisine Types in Barcelona

Thanks a lot, PBSF. Yea I was searching through the boards and got a little disoriented on the cuisines. That was extremely helpful. I hope others find the quick primer of use in the future.

Cuisine Types in Barcelona

Hello all. I´m looking for a quick "101" primer on the cuisine types in Barcelona for a trip this winter. I know the local is Catalan cuisine, but I´m also reading about restaurants that specialize in tapas, pintxos, Valencia (paella). Can someone briefly explain the major types of Spanish cuisine in Barcelona, along with some examples of popular dishes, and perhaps a mention of 2-3 popular restaurants that specialize in that cuisine, say, in Ciudad Vieja? And I can do searches with these restaurant names to get other ideas and information.

I also read about restaurants where you stand up to eat, like at a bar. Can you elaborate a little on that? Much thanks.

Compose

Has anyone been to Compose, the new counter seating restaurant on Worth St. in Tribeca? I think it opened like a week or two ago.

How much was the kaedama? At Ippudo, it's like $2, I think.

Where eould you go ???? Locanda Verde or Marc Forgione

I've been to both and I personally prefer Marc Forgione. I think the food is a creative take on New American cuisine. Also, on Sunday nights, they have a fantastic 3-course prix-fixe deal for around $39 (might have gone up so double-check) of pretty much their full dinner menu, with a couple of dishes coming at a supplemental cost.

On the website, they call it the Sunday Supper.

Kuruma Zushi omakase menu can start at $250
Daniel's 8-course tasting is $205
Rosanjin has a $200 Kaiseki menu.
L'Atelier's tasting menu is ~ $190.
Le Bernadin's Chef's tasting is $185

Any upscale BYOB restaurants??

Don't know how old the list is, but call the restaurants to double-check.

Casual fine dining....

Took a quick look on Open Table for Sunday night.

Craft (American, Gramercy), Craft Bar (American, Gramercy), Lupa (Italian, West Village), Modern Bar Room (French, Midtown West), Perilla (American, West Village), Perry St. (French, West Village), Recette (American, West Village), Union Sq Cafe (American/Italian).

Going under $200 for 2 depends on what you order for wine.

Difficultly of French Laundry Reservations?

Thanks guys for the quick responses.

Yea, I was checking out Manresa (a decent trip out) and Coi. I heard Corey Lee is opening something relatively soon too.

Difficultly of French Laundry Reservations?

I'm from the NYC area and planning a trip to SF/Napa area towards mid/end October. Just wanted to know - how hard is it to get French Laundry dinner reservations?

In NYC, we have really hard ones like Mario Batali's Babbo and David Chang's Momofuku Ko (which is a little bit easier now).

Do I have to call at 10AM PT exactly 2 months in advance? Is a table for 4 easier than 2? I assume lunch is easier to get than dinner, but I would prefer dinner. Any tips?

Just so I get a sense, what are some of the other more difficult reservations to get in the SF bay area?

Thanks Chowhounders!

Jean Georges lunch on saturday—any suggestions?

I've gone a couple of times. I liked the tuna ribbons, foie gras brulee, and the skate w/ chateau chalon sauce. I think I read somewhere that the soft shell crab is good (just got in season).

Top Chef Masters 2 Ep. #10 - FINALE - 06/09/10 (Spoilers)

I live in NYC, but have never tried out Barbuto or Shang. I just checked out Shang's menu and it's so weird that the creativity and complexity of dishes he created during the competition doesn't really reflect on Shang's menu. It looks very ordinary with none of the main dishes really interesting me at all. I would definitely eat any of the dishes he made during the show.

Sushi Yasuda and Kosherness

I have reservations for four people to Yasuda at the sushi bar with the master chef himself. One of the guys I invited is Jewish and has some dietary restrictions, not like being able to eat shellfish and eel.

You think that would be a problem with our meal? Does the chef cater to such restrictions? We planned on getting the omakase.

LV Zagat Ratings Update

Let me just preface this and say that I just use Zagat as a guide and not a definitive measure or anything.

Does anybody know if Zagat is coming out with their 2010 guide or anything? For example, they don't even have CUT rated online, and that's been open for probably close to a year and a half. I understand that the CityCenter restaurants are probably still too new.

Soft shell crab club sandwich?

I had one at Aureole for lunch back in August when it reopened in the new spot by Bryant Park. I enjoyed it.

Sophie's Green Sauce

Anybody know what's actually in Sophie's Cuban Cuisine green sauce?

My friends and I were discussing. We looked up Peruvian-style (I know Sophie is Cuban) green sauces online and found some recipes, but I wonder if they actuall use mayo in it. I'm not looking for how to make it, but just curious what's in it.

I assume it's very similar to Pio Pio. IMO, I like Pio Pio's green sauce more, but I go to Sophie's more often because of the # of locations.

Should I bother with another Per Se review?

That's just crazy. May I ask how much it was? I think I inquired about the extended menu early last year and they said it was $450.

Even if they give the smallest portions for each course, that's still a lot of food. I was very full just from the normal 9 courser.

Upcoming NYC Trip - some booked, others pending.

I thought the same thing about Del Posto. Then I heard that they took away the "more casual" section of the Enoteca and making some other changes (perhaps mainly because they lost a Michellin star?). So Mario and gang are aiming real hard to improve Del Posto, the most expensive of the Batali empire.

They just implemented a $29 3-course pre-fixe menu for lunch Wed-Fri, which I went to this past Friday ($10 for each additional course). I had a great lunch there, with a big selection (pretty much their dinner menu) with an additional course.

That being said, you can't go wrong with your lunch options, uhockey. I'd either go with Cafe Boulud, SHO (only weekdays) or Del Posto (Wed-Fri only). You can probably skip Aureole since the reviews since it moved haven't been good.

Coffee Beans in Manhattan

Thanks everyone!

Kathryn, as usual, your posts on CH are extremely helpful.

It's a Christmas gift, so I'm looking to buy in a week or two. Since our Secret Santa limit is around $75, maybe I'll add one of those popular grinders on Amazon like the Krups 203-42.

Coffee Beans in Manhattan

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I'm looking to get some good coffee as a Christmas gift. I would prefer to stick to places in Manhattan.

Are there any recommendations on places to go and what to get? Should I get the beans or ask to be grinded?

Thanks in advance!

Downtown Weekday Lunch Suggestion for Mom Who Rarely Has Toddler-Free Meals?

SHO Shaun Hergatt is all the way downtown in the Financial District and is a top-notch restaurant (probably close to a 3 star restaurant). They have a nice $30 3-course prix-fixe lunch deal on weekdays. A bunch of Chowhound threads can vouch that it's good.

When I went, it wasn't crowded at all, so you won't be rushed at all.

Tom Tuesday Dinner - Anyone been recently?

I lucked out and got reservations in a couple of weeks.

I got a 7pm seating - do you consider that early?

Also, I think I heard from the reservation person that wine pairing was $105. Is that correct? Are you saying the quality you get with the $105 is worth it? I'm not big on knowing what's better (or at least expensive) wines, but would consider it.
