I'm craving...

My favorite octopus dish is at George's California Modern. I also liked Fish Public's version. However, it's been a few months since I had either so you might check to see if they are still on the menus.

Kid-Friendly Paso Wineries?

Thanks for your input. We visited Turley a while back - 2007, I believe - and enjoyed it. We're kinda curious to see how it has evolved. We visited Halter Ranch around that same time. I wasn't enamored with it, but am willing to try it again. Thanks for the rec on Le Cuvier. Looks interesting.

Coconut cake

Yes, the buttercream is rich. I'm not a big frosting person so I usually ask for light icing.

I like the coconut cake at CAKE on Reynard Way in Mission Hills. However, call ahead because it may be available by special order only.

Kid-Friendly Paso Wineries?

A bit of an oxymoron, I know, but do they exist? My husband and I have an opportunity to be in Paso Robles in early November. We'd like to visit some wineries, but will have our (truly well-behaved) 18 month old daughter with us. We don't want to miss the chance to taste some great wine, but also don't want to impede on any other visitors' tasting experience.

I'd love any recommendations on what wineries may be a better atmosphere for a young family (other than Tobin James - not the experience we're after!). We are interested in visiting Turley, Tablas Creek and Linne Calodo (the last by apt. only, I think). Would those wineries be accommodating? Thanks in advance!

Foodie Wedding

I'd recommend Scripps Seaside Forum. You can't get much closer to the water. When I got married there three years ago they had a long list of approved caterers. I believe Waters was on there.

fresh date nite ideas?

Have drinks before (or after) at Polite Provisions, followed by dinner at Jayne's Gastropub. Request a table on the lovely back patio. We also have a toddler and just recently did this night out ourselves.

Best or Favorite Local IPAs?

Thanks for all the great responses and suggestions. I had a successful trip to the Best Damn Beer Shoppe - what a great place, and super helpful staff too. I picked up a six-pack (cans) of Sculpin, and bottles of Port Wipeout, Rough Draft Double IPA and the Stone Coconut IPA (which sounds a little scary to me, but I think my friends will be into it).

No luck on Alpine. I was told that Alpine bottles are not currently available at any bottle shops, but there may be deliveries in September. I wish I had time to make the drive to Alpine. I looked for Societe as well, but was told that they aren't bottling.

Thanks again for the great suggestions. I really appreciate your thoughtful responses!

Best or Favorite Local IPAs?

We're headed to LA this weekend to visit some friends who are really into IPAs. I'd like to bring them a few bottles as a thank you for hosting us. Any recommendations for local bottles? I'd like to bring them something that they may not be able to get in LA. I enjoy beer, but am more of a casual drinker so any guidance is appreciated.

I've been hearing good things about Alpine lately and am interested in giving them a taste. A quick look at their website shows that they have quite a few IPAs. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks. I picked up regular Mexican Coke at the PL Bevmo, but they didn't have diet.

Huh, you're search skills are superior to mine - nothing about Sam's Club comes up for me. Thanks!

Anyone seen it around? I've tried BevMo, Costco, and grocery stores in Hillcrest. Thanks.

Good date restaurants in Normal Heights area

Second Jayne's. I don't think it's loud at all, and I think the back patio (if it's a nice evening) would be particularly nice for a date.

Creative Catering Options for First Birthday Party

Anyone have any ideas for unique or creative catering options for my daughter's first birthday party? (And I'll be the first to admit that the party is more for my husband and me than for her!) We're looking for something fun and different that will satisfy the adults but still be appropriate for a child's party - nothing over the top. We'd like to avoid the ubiquitous "taco man," as we've done that for a couple of our previous parties. We'll have around 30-40 people and would like to keep our food cost under $800. We're open to all types of food, and the party will be at our house. Would love to hear your ideas!

Burrito Tectonics

Thanks for the recs and recipe inspiration DD and others. Looks like I'm making burritos for dinner! Happy to have some more spots to try. I'll have to give El Cuervo another try. I've had one bean 'n cheezer there, but couldn't tell you much about it. Will have to try Mi Rancho too. I don't eat pork, but I give myself a hall pass for beans cooked in lard. Definitely my weakness! I do have a certain affinity for the b 'n c at the original Santana's (or MXN) on Rosecrans. The best I'm sure it's not, but a sentimental favorite - Santana's was the taco shop of my youth.

Burrito Tectonics

Totally agree, DD. I'm always looking to the best version of the bean 'n cheezer, as they're called in my house. Other than making it yourself, where do you find your favorite version?

$20 San Diego/SoCal food parcel

+ 1 on Chuao. The Firecracker bar is fun and something different. I took an assortment of bars to some chocolate addict friends in Chicago and they loved them. I believe Chuao has some new flavors launching for its 10th anniversary this fall, but not sure when that is.

I'll also suggest Jackie's Jams. Tasty stuff.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 4th quarter 2012 [old]

I agree. I liked the flavor, but the texture was lacking. I missed the little shatter you get when you first bite in and the following chew. Refrigerating the macarons marginally improved the chewiness. The larger chocolate versions provide a little more chew and can satisfy my macaron craving until I can get the real deal. I refrigerate those too - keeps them a little chewier, which is how I like them (though I let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes before eating to take the chill off).

seeking loud loud restaurant

If food isn't the point try either Harney Sushi or Ponce's on a weekend night. Unbearably loud, and I'm relatively young.

1st Choice Restuarants Booked - Need New Recs

I know that George's holds a large number of its tables for phone-in reservations. You might try calling them. I have gotten same day reservations for a Saturday night at least twice before., even when OpenTable said it was booked. It might not work tonight considering it is the holiday season, but I think it's worth a try.

Best restaurant desserts?

Second the pies and butterscotch pot de creme at Banker's Hill. And Eddie V's - had a great berry cobbler and a one of those ubiquitous chocolate molten cakes. Both were totally tasty and satisfying. Cafe Chloe has, in my opinion, one of the best chocolate pot de cremes in town.
