Desserts and decadent treats To-Go

Couldn't agree more with these two. Currently snacking on my son's 1st birthday cake from Azucar. Absolutely delicious. And The Elegant Truffle is a can't miss. My favorite truffles are port and Germany chocolate.

Lunch outside today

I bet! Popped in yesterday to pick up some ceviche and was told that Father's Day is their busiest day of the year. Good to know!

Takeaway breakfast options downtown

Tender Greens (Broadway and First, near your hotel) now offers breakfast. I haven't had breakfast there, but I generally enjoy their lunches and dinners.

Natural/organic meat directly from source in SD

We ended up with the Le Parfait ciabatta and were disappointed with it. It was too soft with no chew and was lacking that open texture I'm fond of in ciabatta. I'll have to check out Stehley.

I stopped in at Back to Roots today. It is no longer carrying Prager breads, which is what I stopped in for, among other things. I was told that they had some delivery issues - mostly due to the distance from Prager's Carlsbad bakery to the store - so they've started carrying bread from Le Parfait instead.

Fun little shop to explore. Picked up some charcuterie, cheeses, bread and basil olive oil for date night tonight. We'll be back.

Kid-friendly/oriented, but Chow-worthy

For casual meals out with our almost 3 year old and 8 month old, we enjoy Embargo Grill, Buena Forchetta, California Kebab, Pho Fifth Avenue, Suppanee Thai and Station Tavern (a small play area provides some fun and is nice when you're with another family with kids). Finish dinner at ST with ice cream at The Daily Scoop. Jayne of Jayne's Gastropub often has her 2 young kids in the restaurant - the back patio is especially nice for the kids. Tender Greens has the only kids menu we'll order from - the chicken plate includes roasted veggies and mashed potatoes and is truly just a smaller portion of the regular offering. Outdoor or patio seating at any restaurant is always helpful, too.

Anybody like meatloaf?

I've had great turkey meatloaf at The Red Door. It's been awhile, though, so you might check the menu before going.

Discontinued at Trader Joe's: July 2014-December 2014

They might be going seasonal. I couldn't find the small cans of diced green chiles at my store. When I asked about them, I was told they were transitioning to a seasonal item and won't be back until Spring. Doesn't make much sense to me, but the same thing may be happening to the peppers and onions.

Mariscos German Locations and Hours

The Nine Seas truck wasn't at it's usual location on Grape when I drove by on Thursday around 11.30 a.m. Hopefully it was just a one time thing.

Can you tell me more about this tradition? What is the significance of black chicken? Thanks!

I'm craving...

My favorite octopus dish is at George's California Modern. I also liked Fish Public's version. However, it's been a few months since I had either so you might check to see if they are still on the menus.

Kid-Friendly Paso Wineries?

Thanks for your input. We visited Turley a while back - 2007, I believe - and enjoyed it. We're kinda curious to see how it has evolved. We visited Halter Ranch around that same time. I wasn't enamored with it, but am willing to try it again. Thanks for the rec on Le Cuvier. Looks interesting.

Coconut cake

Yes, the buttercream is rich. I'm not a big frosting person so I usually ask for light icing.

I like the coconut cake at CAKE on Reynard Way in Mission Hills. However, call ahead because it may be available by special order only.

Kid-Friendly Paso Wineries?

A bit of an oxymoron, I know, but do they exist? My husband and I have an opportunity to be in Paso Robles in early November. We'd like to visit some wineries, but will have our (truly well-behaved) 18 month old daughter with us. We don't want to miss the chance to taste some great wine, but also don't want to impede on any other visitors' tasting experience.

I'd love any recommendations on what wineries may be a better atmosphere for a young family (other than Tobin James - not the experience we're after!). We are interested in visiting Turley, Tablas Creek and Linne Calodo (the last by apt. only, I think). Would those wineries be accommodating? Thanks in advance!

Foodie Wedding

I'd recommend Scripps Seaside Forum. You can't get much closer to the water. When I got married there three years ago they had a long list of approved caterers. I believe Waters was on there.

fresh date nite ideas?

Have drinks before (or after) at Polite Provisions, followed by dinner at Jayne's Gastropub. Request a table on the lovely back patio. We also have a toddler and just recently did this night out ourselves.

Best or Favorite Local IPAs?

Thanks for all the great responses and suggestions. I had a successful trip to the Best Damn Beer Shoppe - what a great place, and super helpful staff too. I picked up a six-pack (cans) of Sculpin, and bottles of Port Wipeout, Rough Draft Double IPA and the Stone Coconut IPA (which sounds a little scary to me, but I think my friends will be into it).

No luck on Alpine. I was told that Alpine bottles are not currently available at any bottle shops, but there may be deliveries in September. I wish I had time to make the drive to Alpine. I looked for Societe as well, but was told that they aren't bottling.

Thanks again for the great suggestions. I really appreciate your thoughtful responses!

Best or Favorite Local IPAs?

We're headed to LA this weekend to visit some friends who are really into IPAs. I'd like to bring them a few bottles as a thank you for hosting us. Any recommendations for local bottles? I'd like to bring them something that they may not be able to get in LA. I enjoy beer, but am more of a casual drinker so any guidance is appreciated.

I've been hearing good things about Alpine lately and am interested in giving them a taste. A quick look at their website shows that they have quite a few IPAs. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Good date restaurants in Normal Heights area

Second Jayne's. I don't think it's loud at all, and I think the back patio (if it's a nice evening) would be particularly nice for a date.

Creative Catering Options for First Birthday Party

Anyone have any ideas for unique or creative catering options for my daughter's first birthday party? (And I'll be the first to admit that the party is more for my husband and me than for her!) We're looking for something fun and different that will satisfy the adults but still be appropriate for a child's party - nothing over the top. We'd like to avoid the ubiquitous "taco man," as we've done that for a couple of our previous parties. We'll have around 30-40 people and would like to keep our food cost under $800. We're open to all types of food, and the party will be at our house. Would love to hear your ideas!
