Best barbacoa

I'm new to Austin and curious to check out barbacoa-- I never saw it before moving to Texas. I've read that the best barbacoa comes from the head or cheeks. Where's the best place to try it in Austin? How do you know they're not using shoulder or roast?

Rocky Point clam cakes and chowder

thanks Alicia! Yes I know it closed while I was still a kid. I will take a look at that recipe.

Dining alone in Portland

Help me decide where to eat in Portland next week! I'll be traveling alone and staying at the DoubleTree. I won't have a car, but I might get a bike. I've never been to the Pacific Northwest before, and I'd really like to focus on unique foods I can't get anywhere else (I've lived in Austin, NYC, New Orleans, and Rhode Island). I'm interested in seafood, ethnic foods, charcuterie, and artisan cheeses. I also don't have tons of money to spend. Thanks in advance!

Rocky Point clam cakes and chowder

I'm homesick for RI and thinking about Rocky Point and those clam cakes and chowder they served. What made it so good? And where can I get food like that on my next trip to RI?

Food Writing Is Not Dead

I love this rebuttal! It sums up my reaction completely. She seems nostalgic for an era that perhaps never even existed. Yes it was possible to get a staff job back then, but the barriers to entry were so high. Now anyone can make a go for it.

Marrow bones...

They almost always have them on the bottom shelf of the meat freezer at Wheatsville. They are from a local farm. I had a craving for them recently, and they were great!

Lobster Roll Buns?

Please let us know if you find them. This Rhode Islander would love to know if they're available in town!

Where to buy Kabocha squash (besides Whole Foods)?

MT Supermarket sometimes carries it, and I'm sure its pretty inexpensive.

My favorite things from Central Market

I don't get it. Am I the only person in Austin who can't stand Central Market? I will take Wheatsville or Whole Foods over it any day. I WANT to like it, but every time I've been in, I get super stressed out and feel like I'm trapped in a labyrinth. I don't think it is a pleasant shopping experience.

Buying Heavy Cream?

Thanks everyone. The Way Back When pints at Wheatsville are a little expensive for me. I used to get locally-produced cream by the quart for about half that price. Trying to buy directly is a good idea.

Buying Heavy Cream?

Does anyone know where I can buy quarts of heavy cream in Austin? And for how much? I would like to buy from a local dairy. I remember in New Orleans I used to buy quarts of cream at the farmers' market for $8. Does anyone know a dairy that offers something like that here? The pint containers are expensive. Thanks!

Where can I buy "Food, Inc" approved groceries in NYC?

Ideally, the Food, Inc. people would probably tell you to stick to food from the farmers markets, and avoid eating tomatoes in March if you live in New York. Also, Pollan doesn't get that hung up on if produce is certified organic or not. I'm not judging, just saying what I think their take is.

Where to buy Coca-cola (without high fructose corn syrup)?

Almost all of the Mexican grocery store on E. 116th St. have it.

Where to buy oysters

I'm looking to buy some oysters. I would like to buy a couple of different varieties- not just oysters from the New York area. Wild Edibles comes to mind. Any other suggestions?

Huitlacoche

Almost all of the Mexican grocery stores on 116th between 2nd and 3rd carry canned huitlacoche.

Tacos Al Pastor in Manhattan?

Yes! The tortas are delicious- especially the torta de chorizo. I also love the quesadillas made with homemade tortillas. The best is the huitlacoche quesadilla followed by the flor de calabaza. Don't forget to eat teh pickled habaneros and onions that are available on the counter.

Tacos Al Pastor in Manhattan?

I've never been to California, but I've been to Mexico City many times. I think you need to come uptown or to the Bronx and try some of the Mexican places. There are many disappointing restaurants, but there's also some really great mexican food if you look around!

Tacos Al Pastor in Manhattan?

Cascabel is good too, and its great that they use some free range meats. But I think I still prefer Taco Mix. Also, I don't think tacos al pastor are a menu item at Cascabel.

Tacos Al Pastor in Manhattan?

Definitely go to Taco Mix at 234 E 116th St. Its an authentic hole in the wall taqueria in my neighborhood. The food is amazing- I can't figure out what they do to make it taste so good. Their tacos al pastor are one of the most popular items on the menu. I really can't say enough good things about this place!

Great Italian

I think Leonardo's on St. Charles in the CBD has the best Italian in New Orleans.

Fresh Ricotta in New Orleans

They have locally made ricotta at Whole Foods sometimes, but I haven't seen it lately.
Yesterday there was a post about making ricotta on Mark Bittman's New York Times blog. Its right here: http://bitten.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/... . some

Where can I buy Central Grocery olive salad?

Does anyone know of a store in New Orleans besides Central Grocery that sells their olive salad. I need to buy some this week, but sometimes it can be a pain to go down there. Thanks!

Great food...with a vegetarian

I would avoid Cochon. I don't eat meat, but I eat seafood, and my choices were extremely limited. I haven't been to Dick and Jenny's in awhile, but I've really enjoyed my meals there, and they usually have at least one vegetarian entree. If you want po boys, Mahoney's has some vegetarian options. Also, Central Grocery will make a vegetarian muffaletta if you ask.

Finding Local (Even Organic) Produce/Meat/Eggs?

Does anyone know why the Crescent City Farmer's Market is from 9-1 on Tuesday? You can't show up early if you have to work. It just seems like a bad time to me. I guess most people can get to the Saturday market though.
