Italian Restaurant in Downtown - Near Moscone?
Need really good Italian place to take client. Needs to be in the downtown area close to the Moscone if possible. Thanks !
El Tepeyac
Correct, his daughter is now owner. He's usually there though, he lives next door. The Monterey Park location didn't do enough business and many complained the food was not the same as the Evergreen restaurant. Many years ago there was another location on Broadway in Lincoln Heights. Haven't heard about any others in the works.

Old Las Ruinas Site in Pasadena - Now Taco Station
Have not been, just passed by and noticed yesterday. So, the owner shut down Las Ruinas to open a hot dog & burger 50's type thing that never materialized and years later it becomes another taco place. I doubt it will be anywhere near as good as Las Ruinas was.
Anybody been yet?

Highland Park, Fresh-Made Tortillas, Al Pastor?
The truck that is now parked at the tire shop serves handmade tortillas.
There is an outlaw cart set-up that is usually located on York & 56 outside the produce place that makes them on the spot as well.
Now, I seek chivo, or goat meat.
Best thing to do is go to your favorite carniceria and pre-order it if they don't have it. I made Birria w/goat for Easter and I went to 4 different carnicerias and none of them had it (El Sereno, City Terrace, Boyle Heights areas). I thought all would have it in stock. Finally found it at El Super in Highland Park. I had to ask for it and they brought it out from the back, frozen.
I'm all for recs. for next time though!!
Seeking Carne Asada marinade used by Vallarta Mart Mexican grocery store
And while in El Sereno, stop by the Red Hot Kitchen on Valley Blvd. (about 2 blocks West of Eastern) for a place that has a nice take on the Asian/Mexican fusion thing. Really good and nice size portions w/friendly prices. Start w/the tacos....one spicy pork and one short rib.....you'll be happy.

Concur on La Tapatia. Very fine stuff.
Highland Park, Fresh-Made Tortillas, Al Pastor?
I think you're talking about the outlaw set-up that was in front of the tire shop on York & Nolden (near 56). If so, it's been gone for quite awhile and have not seen it anywhere else.
WHERE DO THEY HAVE THE BEST KOREAN TACOS............ ???
Red Hot Kitchen on Valley Blvd. in El Sereno. Tacos are 2 bucks each and very tasty. Two of them should fill you up.

Best Chile Colorado Burrito?
No, I haven't been there yet.......I'll put it on my list. Have you had the potato tacos at El Atacor on Figueroa in Cypress Park? If so, how does Alberto's compare?
Best Chile Colorado Burrito?
I believe so.....I just work in the area...not super familiar w/all that's around there other than food spots.........I think there is a VFW near there.....not sure what AL 411 is.
Red Hot Kitchen - Asian Fusion in El Sereno
On a mostly industrial strip of Valley Blvd. in El Sereno there is a welcome newbie to the food scene in the neighborhood.
A location that has been a burger joint, Mexican joint, Italian joint etc.....is now Red Hot Kitchen - Asian Fusion. Yeah!
Just went on Saturday finally even though it's in my neighborhood and was impressed.
I had a short rib taco and a spicy pork taco. Both were very good.......the meats were tender w/no gristle or fat........very flavorful. They come on grilled corn tortillas and the meats are covered w/a a mix of lettuce, cabbage, cilantro, tomato and salsa that all work really well together w/the meat.
Other menu items are.....
Mushroom poppers, jalapeno bomb, kimchi quesadilla, Korean taco ssam, oriental chicken salad, avocado mango salad, teriyaki torta (chicken, beef, short rib or pork), shrimp crunch roll, chorizo roll, fried rice (chicken, beef, shrimp, pork, chorizo, tofu), teriyaki bowl (chicken, beef, salmon, spicy pork, pork cutlet, chicken cutlet), spicy chicken wings and tacos or burritos (chicken, beef, spicy pork, short rib, tofu), bbq Korean 1/2 lb. burger.
The tacos were good sized and 2.00 each. I was pretty full w/the two of them.
I will definitely be trying more of their menu items and report back.
Lunch in Downey
It's a Mexican place........real down home cooking.......the Chile Colorado is really good........
Very strange place.....thrashed vinyl booths and a couple of the tables have small TV's chained to them.........
Almost seems as though some of the women who work there live in the back or something......they kinda keep their own hours, but are usually open by 11:30.
Food is really good and home-cooked style.
Lunch in Downey
Try Cuca's on Slauson - cross st. is Passons (across from Chase Bank).
I think it's technically Pico Rivera - not a far drive from Downey though.
Breed St. Replacement
No, I had just came from Metro Balderas in Highland Park and was stuffed.
I'm definitely gonna take another trip down there and try it one of these wknds.
Breed St. Replacement
On Olympic Blvd. about 4 blocks west of Alameda where all the party/pinata stores are.
Went last wknd. and there are at least 15-20 different outlaw cart set-ups mixed in along the 2 or 3 blocks of party/pintata places. Everything from tortas to squash blossom quesadillas to huaraches to tamales and more. I assume that it only happens on the wknds. for the party/pinata store customers. I was there about noon and it was in full swing. Definitely worth a visit.
Taco Caterer for Party - Any Recs?
The Taco Chop guys were great. The asada and chicken were really good......the al pastor was excellent...very tasty. They were really nice guys. Wore chef whites and aprons. Thanks for the rec. Ernie.
LA Produce Market Deli
There is/was a place called the Produce Tavern on 7th btwn. Alameda & Central that served mostly sandwiches as I recall. It was also a bar and I think it had a pool table....haven't been there since the mid-90's though and the last time I past by it was not open. Still looks about the same from outside. Clientele was truck drivers and produce market folk.
Taco Caterer for Party - Any Recs?
Thanks for all the recs.! I put in calls to all yesterday- except neta's rec., as I just saw it today.
Ernie's rec. for Taco Chop called back first and they local to me, so I went w/them - plus I have enjoyed Ernie's recs. for Mexican places in the past. They are to provide: asada, al pastor & chicken tacos plus rice, beans, onion, cilantro, limes and two kinds of salsas. He said he will throw in hot dogs as well because it's a kids party.
I told him there would be 50-60 people and quoted me 300.00 for all of the above.
The party is on the 21st. I will report back.
Dommy's rec. also sounded intriguing - nopalitos and cebollas asadas! I will try them next time.
Neta, what price were you quoted? For how many people?
Thanks all!
Taco Caterer for Party - Any Recs?
Need a taco guy for the end of this month. Just the basics......Asada, Pollo and Pastor.
Had a party a couple months ago and had a taco guy that was nice but the meats were just so-so..........hip me to a new one! for 60-75 people in the Northeast L.A. area (El Sereno).
FYI - I need them to provide the meats, tortillas, salsas, rice, beans and chopped onions/cilantro.
Thanks!
A Culinary Oasis – The Vegan, Macrobiotic, Japanese Cuisine of Shojin [Review] w/ Pics!
Kinda like in China, Mexico, Spain etc.......they have restaurants featuring their country's cuisine that have been there longer than they have been in the U.S.? What a revelation...........
A Culinary Oasis – The Vegan, Macrobiotic, Japanese Cuisine of Shojin [Review] w/ Pics!
Incredible report. I love this place. While not vegan, I would not mind eating something from this menu everyday. Agree on the service.
They really need to find a new location, it would do wonders for their business.
