16 handles???

There is a Sixteen Handles with Rabbi Mehlman's supervision at 98th and Broadway on the upper West Side. Just opened and busy as could be with chairs outside.... I heard there is one in the heart of Midwood in Brooklyn but the rabbi doesn't want to supervise it not to step on the toes of the Vaad of Flatbush

Spectrum Coconut Oil, Kosher for Passover

I looked at the kosher Australia site and found
Macadamia Oils of Australia
Macadamia Oil

Proteco Pressed Purity Cold Pressed
Almond Oil
Apricot Oil
Avocado Oil
Macadamia Oil
Walnut Oil
maybe the same thing is true here that all of these are acceptable when cold pressed

Spectrum Coconut Oil, Kosher for Passover

I wonder which other oils could be available kosher for passover? Wouldn't it be nice to try macadamia oil, almond oil, palm fruit oil.... I think palm fruit oil would not even be that expensive and they say much healthier than palm kernel oil.
By the way, a rabbi who supervises agave nectar told me that the only problem for Passover would be some of the enzymes used in extraction and by the letter of the law that would not render the final product forbidden for Passover

Ciao Bella ice cream/yogurt/sorbet moving to OU

I assume they were advised by someone that the OU is biggest and best, and do not realize that the kosher consumers were coming to them for sorbet labeled parev, and will be gone.

Kosher Balsamic Vinegar?

Fairway has a good one called, I think, Carlotta with the hashgacha of Rabbi Belinow of Milan. The other Italian ones have hashgocho of Rabbi Garelik of Milan.

Sufganiyot

I hear there is a new baked doughnut which tastes as good as a fried one, a couple of stores are selling name, called Holey Donut. Anyone know if this exists in kosher form? Still missing the great donuts at Grossingers bakery on the upper West Side which they would sell hot from the pot!

Favorites at Pomegranate in Brooklyn

People go to Pomegranate for the service, parking, helpful staff and completeness of selection all in 100% kosher, no second-rate hashgochos etc. It is not a super foodie place, but quality is good and number of things which other places just don't have. Enjoy the selection, and the items you saw in non-kosher places and wished you could eat!

Kosher fishmongers - NYC?

Freunds in Boro Park, and Dovids in teaneck seem to be good and fresh!

Break fast

Coffee and cake, then a little salad while the food is warmed up. An hour or so after the fast a nice meal--- challah, vegetable soup, chicken and potato kugel, brown rice and stir fried vegetables.

Mehadrin chocolate Leben- Weird Taste?

My family loves them, we just bought a batch a few days ago and no complaints were heard. In fact my family insists that they are the best lebens and won't let me buy the cheaper brand.

Trader Joe's baked goods no longer kosher

Trader Joe frequently changes suppliers, and as a result will sometimes have hashgocho and sometimes not. Because of some operational considerations, they change more frequently than supermarket brands,

Bris Locations on the Upper West Side

Ask a restaurant to do it... most won't charge for the room. See if Roma or Mike's would give you the whole place before normal opening hours.

Kosher butcher in Lower Westchester

I think the area's kosher customers have been gravitating to fairway in Pelham, or Supersol-now called Seasons or the glatt place in Riverdale.

Chalav Yisroel Milk Condensed, Evaporated, Powdered

powdered cholov yisrael is available from several companies. Kosure is often on sale in kosher grocery stores. Bluegrass Dairy has also made a cholov yisrael milk powder

Eighteen Restaurant

i went there with my wife and daughter, they liked it, although fairly standard israeli fare. rather an israeli ambience too with more Ivrit than ENglish spoken by the patrons. Food was good, not outstanding

powdered milk substitute

I think there is a soy milk powder certified OU pareve made by now foods... should be a good substitute

Planning a Kosher Wedding In Manhattan

It all depends on the kind of place you want, hotels cost more than synagogue halls and small less highly decorated halls charge less than big fancy ones. If you are a member of synagogue with a modest hall they might let you do it very reasonably. OZ and ramat Orah on the upper West Side will do modest budget events with glat kosher caterer of your choice. So will a couple of lower east side synagogues, including the zany Angel Orensantz on Norfolk Street, which is not really a synagogue any more. The cheap venues are mostly in Brooklyn and other outlying areas, but smaller manhattan synagogues are the closest to an affordable choice in manhattan.

Locavore kosher chicken purveyor (NYC-area)

How local do they have to be? Empire and mehadrin both are chickens raised in Pennsylvania dutch country, about 100 miles from the city. There are several shechitos that are local, including North 4th St. in Brooklyn, and they often use chickens raised nearby.

Kutscher's Hotel Food

At second hand, food was pleasant and generous. I don't think there is claim to being high end gourmet. Amenities are same as all old style Catskill hotels, a little tennis, a little swimming, country air, walking to dining room, walking to tea room, napping.... there is a little of everything but still the old style

Bris on the Upper West Side

1. In your home 2. some of the apartment houses like the Montana on 88th street and the Bromley on 83rd street have party rooms. So does Dorot on 85th street, and the income goes to help their work. The Jcc is anotehr possibility, or if you have big bucks and are a graduate of Columbia, they have spaces for rent. good luck.

where can I find quality Kosher chocolates and candy in Manhattan?

Kosher Marketplace on the upper West Side has lots of top notch kosher chocolates, including elegant gift boxes, more then the other kosher stores.

Crazy Question Re: Cafe Roma in NY

I think Roma could accommodate you BUT they don't do shava brochos regularly (parties there tend to be children's birthday parties) so you would have to be sure they want to bring everything you need. Could be good and inxpensive

Gluten Free Deli Meats

All the kosher for Pesach deli is gluten free

Kosher catering hall/shul for Bar Mitzvah in Brooklyn

Mark David, the in-house caterer at Lincoln Square is top of the loine, when he does other locations prices are very high. At Lincoln Square he is more reasonable.

Nitrite Free Deli Meat

Both Mealmart and 999 make nitrite free sausages, but they have to frozen. I believe that Monsey Glatt and Shoppers haven in Monsey may make their own deli meats without nitrites, worth asking.

My Most Favorite to open on West 72nd Street

passed by yesterday and the W 85th street space is boarded up, no sign of imminent activity. But MMF on 72nd street already has a sign up. I heard that Coco Cafe is opening across the street from them this weekend.

Kosher Dessert Reception NJ

The owner of the Texmex place on Cedar lane in teaneck also has a catering business, (something like Kosher creative kitchen) I went to a very good dessert reception he catered several years ago. I don't know if he still does that kind of thing.

Passover Kosher Meals in NYC?

Kosher Marketplace (Broadway and 90th Street in Manhattan) has upscale food, kosher for passover and will prepare it in platters or plates or containers as you wish. You cxan order shemura matzo and everything from there.

Best Bakery NY Area?

For some things Yossi's in Brooklyn is fabulous, others only so-so. My experience has been that no bakery is good at everything. Try Fairway for danishes! And Tiferes in Williamsburg for challos, and Moishe's in the east Village for almond horns and cheese strudel.

Killing the Matzoh Ball

There are non-gebroks knaidel mixes from potato starch sold in the kosher stores. I have used Liebers, most people assumed they were the real thing when I served them!
