U.S. MILITARY

Mess Hall/Dining Facility or whatever the Navy calls it usually serves good chow on Thanksgiving Day. Price is quite reasonable and I'd bet money they had enough turkey to feed a flotilla.

Help! Looking for a Xingtea retailer

Denver based canned tea in about 14 flavors with no high fructose corn syrup. Sorta like Arizona Iced Tea but better and can't locate any in the area. Thanks.

Good quick eats off 81 in Virginia?

My exit (Rt 7 east at Winchester Va) has ZZ Kabob, which can make you a very nice Persian type kebab (lamb and chicken for sure) platter with absolutely wonderful rice, salad, veggies, etc. Not drive-thru but if you call ahead 15 minutes or so it would be ready. First shopping center off 81 going east (next to the Sonic Drive-In, but you do not want to go there) and hittable by a well-pitched ball from I-81.

Lots of chain fast food off of I-81 in the Shenandoah Valley.

If you get as far as Martinsburg and still need something decent to eat, there's a Chik-Fil-a in the parking lot of the shopping center at the Queen Street Exit.

Vegetarian recs in Berryville, VA and surrounding area?

Amen on both Stone Soup and Blue Moon in Shepherdstown. Blue Moon looks a bit hole in the wall'ish, but good food and good beer and casual. Usually a younger crowd, but a good time there. Also the coffee and service at the Lost Dog there can't be beat.

In Winchester, One Block West is what I usually recommend for vegetarian food. Food there is very good, and good value for the $. Chop Stick in Winchester has vegetarian sushi, can probably make you just about anything you would want, and has the best key lime pie on earth.

Magnolia's in Purcellville would make you happy as well--not much vegetarian, but a good restaurant. I have never heard of the other Purcellville one. Patowmack Farms is good, but a bit of a drive and pricy. Ashby Inn not so much of a drive but pricy. Ditto L'Aberge. Hunter's Head in Upperville is pretty good and can definitely do vegetarian, but service can be spotty. The folks at the coffee shop in Berryville (Daily Grind still?) can do you a vegetarian sandwich, and I would wager are a pretty good source for recommendations for vegetarian food. The French bakery on the corner can probably make you a pretty good sandwich or salad as well. And the Battletown Inn has some goodly sized salads on the menu.

Winchester is about 15 minutes away, Purcellville and Ashby Inn (Paris) about 20 minutes; Shepherdstown about a half hour, as is Hunter's Head (Upperville). Potomack Inn north of Leesburg and probably closer to 40 minutes.

woodstock VA anything at all?

Circolo's looks interesting, though I have not tried them myself.

A ways down Rt 11 near My Jackson is the Route 11 Potato Chips factory. Dunno if they have tours on weekends, but worth a try. Free samples?

And there's always Cracker Barrel. :

Hockessin, DE--dinner out?

Personally, I'd forget about dinner out and get a couple subs from Casipulla's (absolutely first rate subs). Not much in the way of tables though.

A week in Winchester

Besides the above list (and I can't really recomment Cork St), try the Salvadorean restaurant on Papermill Lane (can't remember the name) which is next to the Hispanic grocery store there. Excellent papusas. Also you have to try the Chop Stick which is just across the tracks in the old Stonewall Grill. The food is good and the key lime pie is homemade and probably the best thing you will eat the entire week. Also, a good Jamaican joint just up the street opposite Handley library, and ZZ Kabob, a Persian place just off of Rt 7 past I-81 (next to Sonic). Bread is mediocre, but everything else is excellent.

Shepherdstown (and surrounding area) WV Info Needed

Plenty of good restaurants in Shephardstown; for Winchester I can recommend One Block West for dinner, and Chop Stick for desert and pretty good Thai. A couple of other good Thai restaurants in Winchester as well as a couple of good off the beaten path Mexican places that I've mentioned previously.

Good food in Bolivar/Harpers Ferry

Might want to add this to the Mid-Atlantic section of Chowhound as well.

Chop Stick Cafe in Winchester Va

Don't think anyone has mentioned this place before on Chowhound. Opened last winter n the old Stonewall Restaurant on Piccadilly Street in Winchester--not far Piccadilly's Public House.

Restaurant has a varied sushi, burger, pan-Orient menu, but the best things we have had so far are Thai (and mostly not on the menu). Troeg's beer along with a variety of others (all bottle, but fresh), and the absolute best Key Lime Pie I have ever eaten.

Highly recommended if you like Thai food (although Winchester has several good Thai places), highly recommended for Beer afficionados (there is a bar area--so dropping in for a Mad Elf would be ok), and very highly recommended (better than Sweetwater in Herndon) for the Key Lime Pie.

Would like to hear other opinions, but the food is almost as good as One Block West (as good if you factor in the pie), and so is the beer.

SF Hound wants VA/Southern Regional Food BESTS

beg to differ on the ones I have experienced here--Butcher's Block is totally pedestrian; Spelunker's? Not sure I have ever heard that one recommended, but the others in Staunton Harrisonburg areas are okay, but an awful long detour. Bluegrass in C-Ville is excellent by Virginia standards, but don't know that it will impress a SanFranciscan. L'auberge is not cheap, and I think you can do better for less. Some good ethnic Latino and Indian restaurants around Dulles area; breakfast is generally not a good Dulles area meal.

Where is Red Fox Inn?--if the one in Middleburg, it is very poor value for money.

Any good eats in Martinsburg, WV?

We tried it. Pretty good--wish there was a way to combine all three places--Nutters for the cost and atmosphere, Rock Hill Creamery for the locally made ice cream, and Skippers for the unusual flavors. I have to say the place could use some funkying up---the menu is very vanilla, and nothing in the place gives a clue as to where the ice cream comes from. Would guess from the number of coffee beans in the dip the missus got that it's homemade, but they don't say that anywhere. Anyway, recommend all three as a circuit ride.

Pupusas in metro DC area??

El Ranchito out in Winchester (2018 South Loudoun) is very good. I know--other board, but still quite good. All the usuals--cheese, pork and cheese, chicken, loca...

Restaurants is Shennendoah Area (Winchester, MCCaffeyville, Charlottesville, Fort Royal,Etc )

Various recommendations for Winchester and the surrounding area:

El Ranchito, South Loudoun Street does a really good Mexican/Central American menu. The pupusas are especially good there, but also plaintains and tortas and such are fine. Clientele is mostly Hispanic. One of the best places to eat in the area is the Double Tollgate flea market on weekends -- there is a Taqueria Mexicana taco wagon there that serves great tortas and tacos. Highly recommend them. Also, there is another very good Hispanic restaurant no more than a mile or so on the right up Rt 522 north from the Flea Market. Can't remember its name, but look for a small red building next to a country store.

For pretty good Jamaican food, try the Tropical Cafe, just off the downtown mall; again, more of a carryout place.

And last of all, for the best barbeque in the area, Art's at the Berryville Farm Market on Saturday morning is probably the best in 50 miles.

I wouldn't recommend Butcher's Block--nothing special anyway. Naked Oyster is okay; more of a carryout than a restaurant setting.

One Block West is a very good restaurant in Winchester, and would be my choice for the best one there---I think head and shoulders above Violino but there are those who prefer them. There are a couple of good Thai restaurants in town--would not recommend one over the other, but all of them are better than anything else oriental in town.

And most importantly, make sure you spell it Shenandoah!

Any good eats in Martinsburg, WV?

Thanks! Tried it Friday evening, and it was worth the trip. For anyone not from the Martinsburg area, its about a half-mile off of I81 at the Rt 45 exit. Take 45 West (past the Target), and its about 1/2 mile on your left. Just when you think you are heading into the wilderness, look for a farmhouse just off the road to the left witha Rock HIll Creamery sign. Til 10 every night in the summer at least. Don't know if there is anything similar within 50 miles--not as cheap as Nutter's but better and more local.

Virginia Crab Shack?

I saw that show at well. Went and googled the restaurant and would note that it received at best a very mixed review on Tripadvisor and other sites.

Cute Ice Cream Shop or Parlor in the DC/MD/VA area?

Depending where you live, Nutter's in Sharpsburg has a certain Dundalkian cuteness, and very good ice cream that is a real bargain.

Frozen Custard

Red Rooster and Jimmy Cone both still there--went there two Sundays ago based on a bunch of recommendations on here. Unimpressed with both. I can see how someone would like the fried chicken, but didn't find it to be anything special. Jimmy Cone was quite the disappointment. We like Dairy Godmother, but it is a once every few months treat as it is so far away.

5 Best Breakfasts In VA.....................

I second the Bluegrass--not because it is a great breakfast place, but because they are consistantly very good and the service is always first rate. We go once a year on booksale weekend in April--always a waiting list on Saturday mornings, but recommend putting your name on the list and checking out the farmer's market just down the street.

There is nothing nearly as nice in Northern Virginia or in the Winchester area for breakfast, though I have been to several places in Northern California that put the Bluegrass to shame.

Will have to try at least the Richmond place based on this.

Front Royal - casual dinner w/toddler

Cracker Barrel fits the bill just fine if you don't mind a chain. Also, Jalisco is casual, Mexican, and child friendly. Were I going to Stephens City I'd be inclined to go to Roma's instead of Butch Block, unless you are pining for buffett. Have never been to Spelunker's.

Friday road trip -- Rt 11 or 81 between Front Royal VA and Lewisburg WV

Not really. Stopped for an ice cream snack in Staunton at Split Banana--very good and totally unexpected from my previous visit to Staunton a few years back. All natural gelato and ice cream at a good price, and just up the street from a great live music venue called The Mockingbird. Would have had dinner there, as John Cowan was playing, but we were on our way to Lewisburg to see Iris Dement (great as always).

Had lunch at some little bistro in Harrisonburg; food wasn't bad, but totally unmemorable, as is the name of the restaurant.

That's all--hopefully better next time.

Upscale vegetarian options in Winchester, Martinsburg, Shepardstown or Harpers Ferry?

Two easy ones here that you'll be very happy with--One Block West in Winchester, with Ed Matthews as owner/chef, and Stone Soup in Shepherdstown. You can find other places that qualify, especially in Shepherdstown, but these are probably your best bets. Both of them have web sites and are downtown and easy to find.

Not looking for anything gourmet or bistro-like. Just looking for a good eating spot that we don't know about -- extra points for a good ice cream shop or any place with good fried chicken.

The 59 Best Breakfast Places In US..........

Hmmm... Breakfast is the best meal of the day at Bavarian Inn, but unless it has gotten considerably better in the last 12 months, it is just ok. In fact, very little in the middle Atlantic/DC area that qualifies as an outstanding breakfast. Personally, I like Bluegrass Cafe in Charlottesville for breakfast, but wouldn't even put them in the top 50 in the country.

Salisbury Wicomico Civic Center

I grew up on Red Door Sub Shop subs. Left town in 1976, but they are still going strong, and I still get back there for a submarine everytime I'm in town. The epitome of good eating in Salisbury. They are on Rt 13 and about a 15 minute drive (west on Main from the Civic Center area and then left on 13 for about 2 miles. Best to use a Garmin to find it.

Best pub experience in Fells Point?

We like Slainte. Good food, good beer on tap, and a nice view. The fish and chips are especially good. And hard to beat Henderson Wharf Inn. They have an especially good breakfast buffet.

Emmitsburg, MD Food Recs?

Was not particularly impressed with Chubby's on my previous visit, and cannot recall anyplace else in Emmitsburg. Kountry Kitchen in Thurmont is country, and ok, but strongly suggest avoiding the Cozy, especially the buffett. Shamrock is not much better. If you can wait until you get to Frederick, you'll find more to choose from.
