Butter and Garlic fries...

Candlelite on Western/Howard. Wonderful garlic fries and great thin crust pizza

Where to find the BEST THIN crust pizza?

I really love Candlelite in Rogers Park on Western/Howard. Cracker thin crust and good sauce. Unfortunately, they do not deliver. I think Tuesday nights are buy one get one free.

I also second Lou's thin crust. They also offer LF cheese that I SWEAR tastes full fat.

O'fame is also very tasty.

evanston, rogers park

Oh ye of little faith - Rogers Park has some great eats. I like Grande on Clark for inexpensive yummy sushi. Heartland on Lunt for good hearty breakfasts. I will claim Uncommon Grounds on Devon even though technically it is Edgewater. Great drinks and local comfort food. I like Big Buns and Pita on Clark for their Fatoush Salad. Very fresh! Morseland is a good choice with a great dj. Also a new coffee shop (again technically Edgewater but on Devon) Stella serves Intelligentsia coffee and Southport Grocery cupcakes.

Evanston - I like the Stained Glass for wine and appetizers (try their cheese plate!). Lulu's Dim Sum and then Sum for their munch a brunch. Lucky Platter is fun for comfort food and good salads.

Enjoy!

Le Bouchon or Le Sardine?

I really enjoy La Sardine over Bouchon. The pre-fixe is an excellent deal and the souffles are to die for. I recommend going on Thursday for pre-fixe or Monday nights for half price bottle of wine night. It can get loud in there so go for an off week night.

Best Chicago Foodie 'Hood

I have to put in a plug for Rogers Park. Very diverse neighborhood and the food reflects it - Indian, Pakistani, Thai, Mexican, North African. But also, we are getting higher end restaurants here too! Viet Bistro (not at its best yet but a hopeful sign), Uncommon Grounds is moving in on Devon, and more to come. I love the Indie Cafe (edgewater) for amazing Thai, venture a bit further down Clark and you have much more in Andersonville - La Donna, Hopleaf, MHenry. Plus you are almost right on the border of Evanston that has some tasty eats and a great rmainstream/art theater!

It is relatively inexpensive still and near the L and the lake. Give us a try. :-) We are worth it!

West Town Tavern Recommendations?

A definite must have is the Rosemary Potato Chips. Homemade..drizzle with balsamic reduction and white truffle oil and sprinkled with grated parmesan.

I also love their pork tenderloin and the pot roast. I also highly recommend the wine selections. Very well described and tasty. A recent Suri and Barbarra were well worth the money.

Have a great time.

Authentic Japanese?

hi all!

My boyfriend's teenage daughter is coming to visit and I need to take her to a truely Japanese experience. She is studying Japanese and would be thrilled to get a taste of the culture. I would love excellent food and a dreat atmosphere.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Chicago Hound Visiting NYC - Need food destinations

hi all!

I have 4 days in NYC for feeding my food addiction. We have reservations at Asia de Cuba and WD-50. I now need food destinations. Shops, specialty stores, hole in the wall eats...

Is Zabars worth a visit? Any cookware stores?

I want to go home sated and with a suitcase full of items I can't live without.

Any ideas for me?

thanks! Alise

Rethinking Vermilion reservation, also thinking about brunch

LOVE Vermillion! I am heading there on Monday night. It is worth it and you can call ahead and ask Manheet for a vegetarian menu. She is very accomodating.

Fresh lobster meat in Chicago?

hi all!

I am looking to make a lobster pot pie for a special dinner. Does anyone have a recommendation for fresh picked lobster meat? I am just not up for boiling and picking those little guys myself.

Northside Chicago location would be great - but I will travel if it is great quality.

thanks! Alise

Ethiopian suggestions?

I really enjoy Rasdashen and Adfdis Abeba. I have never been a big fan of Ethiopian Diamond. Food was ok. Service slow.

So much of a contrast from the service at Rashdashen. I ordered the Ethiopian Coffee and tehy came out from the kitchen to let me smell the handroasted coffee. Lovely service. Great food.

Best High Tea in City for Holidays?

Last year, I went to both the teas at the Drake and the Pennisula. I was very disappointed with the Drake. They were rushing people in and out. The edibles were a bit dry and uninspired. So I would pass on it this year.

The Pennisula on the other hand was more low key. The food was lovely and we were able to take our time and enjoy ourselves.

The Ritz Carlton was also lovely. The atrium on snowy days is quite a sight!

30th Birthday Party

I had my 30th birthday at La Donna in Andersonville. They gave us the upstairs room and the service was excellent. Their wonderful Italian Food was served family style so everyone was encouraged to mix and mingle. It was definitely in your budget range. I really had a great birthday there.

Where to Go for the Best Hot Dog

ok - I have to be the one to say it. I love the Wiener Circle. Char Dogs are my preference over boiled dogs. Maybe its my nostalgia for summer. I love the sauteed onions and all the fixins. Also, if you are a cheese fries fan - I believe they use Merkt's. Someone tell me if I am off.

Best Late Night Eats?

It never fails - I am coming home from a late night jaunt and I get hungry. I scan all my favorites to see what's open. For some reason I have come to believe that all great Chicago chow spots close at 11pm. Please prove me wrong. I love all kinds of food. What's open late? Weekdays AND weekends...I never know when that late craving will strike!

thanks! A

Please please please help a desperate chowhound bride make a decision soon!

Riques is fantastic! Service can be a little slow but the food makes up for it.

You might also think about Chinatown. The Phoenix on Archer has excellent food and enough room for a large seating. It also might be fun to share dishes. The food might be a little adventurous for the average Chinese food eater but they have some standards there.

Burgers and Merkt's cheese?

Oh definitely go to Paradise Pup. I used to go there as a kid. Dr. Pepper, a cheeeeezzzeeeeburger, and those thick steak fries. Fantastic junk food.

Need some recommendations around Northbrook

Not loving Prairie Grass. Went there around Christmas. The atmosphere was almost too casual with kids running around with menus on their head.

The food was ok. A real disappointment from what I expected.

Hole in the Wall was excellent but go at an off time - they really do mean hole in a wall.

Driving from Reno to Lake Tahoe (South) - Where should I eat? [Moved from Southwest]

hi all!

I will be flying into Reno at 9am and then meandering up to Tahoe. Any places I can't miss on the way or worthwhile side trips? After a convention food for the rest of the week I am looking for some gems. Any food is good!

thanks! Alise

Need good bakery recommendations for baby shower cake plzzz

I really do enjoy Bittersweet. I live in Rogers Park and I make the trip to select a great cake. They are not cheap but they are not too expensive either.

If you are looking for something really local try Taste of Heaven or the Swedish bakery on Clark in Andersonville.

Taste of Heaven has some good cakes and the Swedish bakery has lots of interesting treats.

But here's a different idea that I have tried. Head to Southport Grocery on Southport and order their delicious cupcakes. Build a pyramid on a cake plate, add some edible flowers and VOILA - individual treats for all!
