I think the interior changes are an upgrade--they put in nice booths. A definite upgrade over the too-small tables with the annoying fork sculptures. I did not even notice the fake plants.

But agree that they should not have changed the burger. Burger still good I think, esp. for this area, but was better as a stuffed burger. Now the cheese just goes on top. Still better than moonies, and they do have fresh cut fries, and the Maine Root soda fountain. But less interested in going back due to the burger changes.

In search of the best Cinnamon Roll in Austin

Love the cinnamon rolls at Upper Crust. Very very good!

Tamales at Costco

HEB has Pedro's. They're not bad. Not great, but ok for grocery-store tamales.

"Healthy/safe" beef/burger for pregnant lady?

The old Houston's had a great burger, cooked to order over hardwood, and ground in-house I believe. It's changed names to Bartlett's, but I believe food/menu identical.

Chili Dogs

Agree on the homemade recipe, although I also like Ball Park beef dogs. Get the Wolf sans beans, of course, and don't forget chopped raw onion and a sprinkle of pickled jalapenos.

Where can I get a good steak quesadilla without going downtown?

Dos Batos.

Brief stay, two or three meals (was BLAH BLAH BARTON SPRINGS, below)

I too generally prefer brown gravy on my CFS, and also hail from Texas (native Austinite to boot!).

Anyone finding HOT Hatch chiles around town?

Also got "hot" from CM today and they are as you describe. But got hot ones from HEB on Far West last week that were indeed hot. So hot that I was wishing there were a "medium" category.

Hard Hat Report Vol 8

Culver's > Freddy's bcs they offer cheddar. Otherwise burgers are pretty similar--smashed patty thin griddle burger. Last time I went to Freddy's, the fries were coated in so much seasoning salt I could not eat them. Also, the faux-fifties feel of Freddy's is offputting. They have photos up that make you think Freddy's has been around forever, but it started in the 2002 I think.

Chupacabra Burger - Cat Mountain Grill - Anyone else had this?

Sounds decent. Are the fries fresh or frozen?

Review: Old School Grill

Thanks for the review. Was looking forward to trying the burger. Will probably wait a few weeks as well.

Chupacabra Burger - Cat Mountain Grill - Anyone else had this?

Please report back, curious about this place. Hopefully better burgers than The Hub.

Hard Hat Report Vol 8

Yeah, the traffic flow design in that Arbor Walk is horrendous! And they are cramming more businesses in there still (just opened BJ's Brewpub or whatever, and there's something going in behind Mimi's now).

RIP part 4

Interesting, any more details on this "Flipping Burger" replacement?

RIP part 4

Just noticed The Hub on Dry Creek is now Cat Mountain Grill.

Lizano Salsa

Yes, I found it at Tears of Joy on 6th last Christmas. Bought two bottles. Have not checked since.

Hard Hat Report Vol 8

Was thinking the same thing. Seems like a likely spot.

Hard Hat Report Vol 8

Yes, have heard they have a good burger (website implies fresh ground in-house). Looking forward to giving it a try. Bus too far away for me.

Hard Hat Report Vol 8

Old School BBQ (currently a bus) is tweeting about opening a restaurant up north: "doing build out on our new restaurant at Parmer and McNeil".

In The Buns

Also of note in the Dealio thing is this fantastic tidbit of news: "In The Buns now is also testing their new fresh-cut fries".

Where do you buy your steaks (uncooked)?

Awesome, thanks for the tip!

In The Buns

I saw the cook pulling frozen onion rings out of a big bag when I first walked in :(

In The Buns

Also went for lunch today. I thought the burger was quite delicious (got cheddar burger). Fries were pretty bad--frozen curlies. Sculptures annoying. But burger was good enough to bring me back....and Dublin DP on tap is nice.

Austinville North - Amy's Ice Cream, etc.

Good news. Any info on what the other dining options will be? When it first came up years ago, Hog Island Deli was slated to open there....hoping that's still on. Need good cheesesteaks up here.

Favorite B-Grade Mexican in Austin

There is no shortage of cheese *on* the enchiladas (pix of cheese enchilada plate here: http://auslunch.com/restaurants/EnchiladasYMas/pix), but I agree with badwolf's assessment--the cheese enchilada plate at EyM is just not very good in my opinion. Too sloppy, too much glop, not enough flavor.

coffee shop in north austin or round rock

There was a Gabbi's burgers and hot dogs place there that folded last year as well.

Any suggestions for good yeast rolls for Thanksgiving?

Second that recommendation. Load up on her cinnamon rolls as well.

Texas Pie Kitchen

Royer's buttermilk is good, but Czech Stop is better and so cheap--$10 last time I got one (but just a tad inconvenient...100miles N of Austin). They used to have them all the time, but now you have to call 72 hrs ahead if you want pies. Worth it if you are headed to Big D anytime--make the effort, esp. if you are a buttermilk fan! They freeze well.

Texas Pie Kitchen

I tried it two years ago. Have not tried it since, if that tells you anything. Ordered a buttermilk pie, because I love them and they're kind of hard to find (my favorite is from Czech Stop in West, TX). I'm sad to say that it was just awful. Tasted like glue to me. I couldn't proceed beyond one bite. Looked wrong, tasted bad. Just terrible all around.

Hard Hat Report Vol 6

Cool, thanks for the update. Had heard of this coming quite some time ago, but never saw any evidence of it.
