Whole Foods Plymouth Meeting

I heard that WF is trying to price match to TJs. Have you noticed any of this?

ISO: curry ketchup

I used to live in Oakville, now back in the states, and honestly, I used to buy it at the super cheap yellow grocery store there. They had it all over Oakville, and now I can't get it!!

Very sad...

Cheap and yummy in DC

My husband, parents and I are going for a three day weekend in DC and are looking for some cheap but delicious places--any ideas?

What's the worst (nice) restaurant you have been to?

I second Fleur de Sel-- the food is lacking any of the flavors that are written on the menu! Or any flavor, for that matter.

Dinner at Osteria

And I can't imagine that it would be from after the diner finished, because at those prices you need to eat all of the little you are given to get enough!

Strange Pairings that Taste Uncommonly Good

Toast with peanut butter, blue cheese, and a slice of mango. I actually tried this first at a restaurant, believe it or not.

Philadelphia Pizza Place: Mama Palma's

Yes, so rude--we barely even got paid attention to, and when we did, it was a MAJOR interruption, and our food was positively AWFUL! THe pizzas barely had any toppings, and were burned, so what little cheese was on there had turned to crusty grease.

Capogiro Gelato

Sadly, though, as a woman of MAJOR CARDAMOM OBSESSION, I think their cardamom flavors are sort of weak.

I must say that Midtown is my guilty pleasure. I haven't been there for years, but I remember really good onion rings and patty melts.

Capogiro Gelato

I am sure there isn't, as it would have to be on the label, and isn't. But the freeze on gelato in an ice cream shop more closely resembles soft serve, whereas the freeze on a pint of ice cream is usually -20 or so.

Poutine?

Hmmm...I have not heard of this place, but MUST go!!! In the mean time, I will keep my eyes open for poutine here in Philly.

Oh, that's too bad. I was a little afraid when I tried to look it up and the website was gone. But you are correct, Des Moines Art Museum is amazing, and very underappreciated, so I will third the Butler house instead!

Poutine?

I just moved to Philly from Toronto, so my poutine obsession runs pretty deep, and I will say that Pommes Frites in NYC has some of the best--the curds and gravy come from Montreal, and for a real Canadian treat, they carry Remia frites sauce and curry ketchup!!!

YUM!

Best sweet stout?

I don't know if you can get it where you are, but Bell's double cream stout is sweet and amazing!!

I would highly recommend Darrel's in Hamlin as well for DELICIOUS tenderloins. Or, if you are looking for good steaks, the only thing in Brayton is a really good steak and ribs place whose name I cannot remember--I just know that my mom always tells me its really good. THe Redwood is great for fried chicken, onion rings, and the GINORMOUS app plate--you get cut up veggies, cubed cheese, braunschweiger, olives, pickled herring, a delicious cheese spread, pineapple, etc. AND an ice cream drink called the Pink Squirrel that relies heavily on amaretto and is wonderful.

Oh, my good ole' hometown!! I would actually agree about Chestnut Charm, some family came for my wedding and stayed there, but had a bad experience as well. While I think my hometown is worth visiting :), I would suggest a drive to Perry, which isn't even an hour, and offers the HOtel Pattee, which is a lovely restored hotel with themed rooms. Or, on the cheesy but wonderful end, the A Ford O Motel in Atlantic is a great little family owned hotel which hasn't been touched since the 70's--in a good way, and is owned by my third grade Sunday School teacher!!

Standard Tap or Ludwig's Garten

I agree!! South Philly Tap Room all the way!! Always good beer on tap,and the taps are everchanging!

REAL Mexican food in Philly?

As a recent Chicago transplant, I am looking to repeat my fave taqueria experiences here, but have not had any luck so far. Anyone have any suggestions???

Beer Bistro or Bier Markt?

I ate at the Bier Markt once and only once--We got the fondue, which had obviously not been nuked enough, and it was a solid chunk. We asked them to reheat it and they did. While we were waiting, we decided to save our mussels so we could eat them at the same time, and the waitress took them! We let her know that we hadn't finished those yet, and she just walked off. I got my pasta main, and it was also cold, but the plate was burning hot--I told the waitress, and she got the manager, who proceeded to argue that the plate was hot, therefore the food must also be hot. I told him to touch it, but he wouldn't. Finally he brought it out too hot to eat with another serving of mussels--we told him we didn't want them, but he wouldn't take them back!!! BAD service...

Iowa

Oh,lord, I grew up on Ham Balls. Not my favorite things, but anyway. I am glad to see the Redwood's onion rings made the list--they are the best! THey missed the tenderloins in Hamlin at Darrel's, though.

Midwest 'hounds: food unique to or that defines your community/town/metro area/state

I grew up in Southwest Iowa amongst the Danish, and most of my childhood food memories revolve around this. Ebelskiver dinners at ALL of the local churches and at my grandma's house-Ebelskiver are little hat looking dumpling/ pancakes that are served with butter and either syrup or preserves. I also have fond memories of Rolle Polse--a dry cured beef rolled in spices and gelatin, and wherever I move, my parents bring rolle polse care packages--even now across the Canadian border!!
